      Alan Freeman That happened to me back in my highschool days. Former friend of mine got into a fight with me and I defended myself. At the end of it we were both handcuffed and picked up by an officer to go get fingerprinted.

    Sensei Ando, thank you once again for another great insightful video. I have a son who is 14 and has recently received his black belt in taekwondo. He's proficient in his forms and well-mannered. As of lately I've noticed in his sparing session. He becomes hesitant and timid. On the way home I asked him if something was wrong or if he was hurt. He shrugged and said im good. Nothing is wrong. I am not one of those little league dads who goes crazy on the sidelines. But I could clearly see a change in him. So I gentle probed with more questions. Holding back tears, he told me in his excitement. He told his teacher of his achievement. They responded, kids who follow those kinds of discipline become bullies. With tears coming down his face, I don't want to become a bully. We had a heart to heart and with your help, from this video he was able to understand the difference of being a good guy when protecting himself or even others! Thank You Sir

      @AndoMierzwa  7 років тому +2

      You're making ME cry! Clearly, your son is one of the "good guys". Let him know that the world is a better place when the good guys use their power to the fullest... and martial arts is a great way to practice that. Good job, Dad! :)

    Great video and great advice, as always. But I would add that it's also necessary to understand your legal surroundings; not everywhere has the same attitude to self-defense as the US (and even US states disagree on issues like 'stand your ground'). When I was just starting teaching karate, I was approached by the mother of a student and told that her 8yr old son was being physically bullied at school and could I give him advice. Seemed straightforward, until she pointed out that the school had a 'zero-tolerance' rule and if he fought back he would be expelled... (Best I could come up with was either the school needs to enforce the stupid rule on the bully, or her son needs to be able to fight back.) In the end, for myself, I tend towards a sentiment expressed by my JuJitsu Sensei - 'I'd rather be judged by 12 men than carried by 6' - I believe I have a right to defend myself (or others) and will defend that right to my last breath, but I have to also accept that doing so could land me in prison because not all governments and power structures allow that right.

    • @AndoMierzwa
      @AndoMierzwa  7 років тому +7

      +Dan Pearman It gets sticky for sure. I tell parents to make sure their kids know that they will support them even if they do get expelled. Presuming that fighting back was justified, of course. Thanks for the insight, sir.

      It truly is a shame that some need to become a rebel, criminal, anarchist just to stay safe or remain alive when the truly bad people come calling. I really like the "Judged by 12 over carried by 6" philosophy. It's easy as a parent for me to tell my child to do what is necessary to stay alive as life is paramount to anything else in that situation; Infinitely more difficult to advise others as an instructor in a business setting. You gentlemen have my respect 🙏

    Where do I begin? This man, Ando. You deserve huh it's so hard to type but you deserve something so beautiful that our minds can't handle you sir bring so much light and peace to me,maybe even to others if they feel like I do when I'm watching your videos, the advice you give,the expression the way your heart is here standing and protecting the good people we got and yourself while there is so much bad sh#t going on. You are really one of a kind sir and thank you from the bottom of my heart and soul thank you for taking your time to say this and help us grow as souls,as souls that will protect each other and ourselves from the bad in life,you're learning us something much more then how to fight back and be strong,you're teaching us how to be human,how to give Love to others and seek for balance in everything while everything else is testing us in many ways. Ando thanks again! I really hope you get what you deserve and infinite love to you brother. keep on fighting(back) for a better life!

      That's just awesome, and so nice to hear others who feel the same. Ando is truly a great inspiration and example for, not just martial artists but humanity. I cannot deny that copies of Ando would result in a better world, but there is a major problem with that: there are not enough bakers to make that many pies consistently, thus we might all turn into violent sociopaths...

    Hey ando , for the longest time I always wanted to fight back believe in doing something than nothing but circumstances put me in a situation where I was told not to fight bad or I would get suspended while the bullies won and got away. I had a mom who told me fighting is bad but on another hand defend if you had too but when it came to abusive guys she told never interfere that It would be ok , I felt my self esteem and confidence be suppressed. I had this fighting spirit in me but
    My biggest fear is if I fight back now I am doing something wrong or people will be ashamed of me, I dont know what to do.

    Reminds me of when my 12 year old daughter took out the school bully. She got suspended from school so I took her out on a daddy daughter date to celebrate her "day off".
    I'll not hesitate to say that I told her that I was proud of her for taking on the school bully and leaving her on the ground.

      Ayub AbdurRaheem I deleted the previous comment and posted it again for all ppl to see, but as the guy above said, training is the best way the results will just keep showing and showing, for example, before I begun training I would send a kick to over my head and my tendons would hurt, now i can kick more than above my head with no problem do 360° kicks, jump up to a meter in the air, break boards with punches and kicks(although this thing is just to prove the extent of your strength I'd not recommend it as a training) etc etc... I'd recommend you to train in boxing in taekwondo and if you can, also train in jiujitsu, I'm not saying you should go to 3 dojos or gyms tho, you should chose one and train other martial arts in your house apart from the one that you're being teached, I'd recommend those 3 because boxing has the ultimate punches and taekwondoo the ultimate kicks, for endurance and lethality is good to train Muay Thai, and for locks jiujitsu beats all the other martial arts

    Once in high school a last year student (I was in second year high school), always told me things and he really bothered me. One day he attacked me, after I confronted him with words, and as a normal person I fought back. The school suspendes me for 3 days beacuse of that (there were witnesses). I told them "I was defending myself, that is LEGALLY a right". First of all, they said that wasn't true (the defending part), which I think is so ignorant, and their excuse was "there can't be no violence, you should have called someone". I was freaking defending myself! There is no time to call a professor

    There's this kid at my school who thinks he's tough & so strong. He's just stupid & wanting to get killed (if he meets the wrong person!). He threatens & tries to hurt me & my friends for years & I'm finally learning about defending myself. In fact, I told my dad about this & he said he's happy to pick me up if the principal sends me home.
    P.S. I won't just find him and hurt him. I'll wait until he does something that requires me to fight the next time I see him.

    While I agree with your message wholeheartedly, Sensei Ando, and feel this message has to be said to all the good people out there who reflexively don't fight back, there is a problem:
    Almost all people think they're good people, including the bad ones.
    (*Oddly enough, good people might be more introspective than bad people and question their own goodness. Kind of like only stupid people think they're smart because they never question their level of intellect while smart people are aware of their shortcomings and therefore don't see themselves as smart.)
    Having said that, *there are bad people who believe in and act on their beliefs to fight for their right to take away other people's rights.* You made a wise effort not to get political but I can't help but do so, as I am pointing to a specific side (albeit subtly).
    The right to happiness is an obvious innate good - except in the instance where a person can "only" feel good when they can take away happiness from others.
    Also, on amusing note, some points throughout this video, I was ready to hear you drop a phat beat and start rapping or at least say "You have the right. To fight. To PARTEEEEEEEEE!!!!"

      +1128ca Mbq Thanks for the thoughtful comments! It's true that some bad guys likely see themselves as doing something bad for a good cause, but I bet most know they are still the bad guy in any given situation. All my life I have gotten PUNISHED for defending myself. Everytime I have ever stood up for myself, I've been told to "let it go", "get over it" or I have been accused of "starting drama" or being "too sensitive". I personally have never doubted my right to defend myself, it's usually OTHER PEOPLE telling me I am WRONG for standing up for myself. The message that other people have sent to me is that I DONT MATTER, MY FEELINGS & THOUGHTS DONT MATTER, MY BOUNDARIES DONT MATTER & if I try to fight for myself, I get punished in someway. I have been kicked out of places, fired from a job & even suspended from school for standing up for myself. I do not understand why this keeps happening, but it's part of the reason I withdrawal from others. I have come to a point in my life where I literally hate other people & don't even want to be around them.

    "Si vis pacem, para bellum" ... if you want peace, prepare for war. I am starting to think that it's, somehow, the basis of many martial arts. Not necessarly learning to fight to ... well ... actually fight left and right but, rather, establish yourself as a warrior and thus, in doing so, preventing other from being tempted to attack you.
    And when the times comes when you ACTUALLY defend yourself ... or someone else ... well ... at least have the knowledge and skill that you can actually win the fight ... even if there is never such a thing as a guaranteed win in these matters (hence why you should avoid fighting left and right just for the sake of it).
    What I said is worth what it's worth ... but it is mine anyways. thanks for reading ;)

You gain a lot of CONFIDENCE in yourself, you feel you're strong, you feel you're fast, do you see a lion bowing his head to a hyena? What does the lion does when the hyenas come for his food? He roars with might and authority, he says this is my food, my territory, and you have no right to steal this from me, you have no right to invade MY territory, so don't bow your head to the hyenas, YOU'RE the lion, so fight back and roar with might, I assure you that no one will be a threat nor an obstacle to your life and nor to your happiness either

      BilkoStan7 7 Well i dunno about that, i mean, you can easily knock someone with a punch to the chin or to the temple, maybe a one-two on that, that's fast enough and will not cause the individual that ''much harm'' really, more than anything, knocking someone out is being compasive, i may sound like a savage lol.. but you want to end the fight in the shortest time possible, that to avoid hurting the other one, in my case particularly, i don't care how people may see me.. honestly i don't give two shits about that, the ones who really knows me knows who i am, this point of view of mine it's not likeable by many, but, why do you have to be nice to the bad one? or why do you have to be nice with the one who's hurting you? that mindset is the one of which the bad people takes advantage because they know whatever they may do you'll keep thinking the same way, you'll do nothing about it so they'll keep doing what they're doing, personally, if someone is trying to kill me with a knife i'll break the arm that's holding the knife, i'll ensure my safety any day before taking a serious slash or thrust to my body or being killed for the sake of god.. im not in a ring so im not subject to any rules at all, so i can crush balls, break arms or legs, ok now, i don't do things like that everyday lol and will not do so unless my life is in danger, but what can i say man, i was bullied a lot in school when i was a kid and that did not stop until i beated all of my bullies, ''fighting is not the solution'' this is only 2% of the time, literally i had 5 bullies and they all stopped bullying me when i defended myself and beated them up, funny enough, some of them tried to become my friends when i beated them? i dunno how those people minds works, but 3 of them tried to become friends with me after i beated them up... and i dunno about the violent thing, because one time i was with 3 girl friends and some violent guy appeared and he was getting violent towards one of my friends, logically, i knocked him out, i was lucky to have a police car near so they arrested the guy, and all of my friends said the same thing, thanks god you were with us if not who knows what would may've happened to us, so.. it depends a lot of how you look at it

    • @bilkostan7773
      @bilkostan7773 7 років тому +1

      I readed it all, thanks for shearing.
      Your point of view is worth consider. I think in my weight division(150pounds/67kg) will be hard to knock somebody out(luck is also involved). And if i want to hit somebody(it happend in my middleschoool) guess what happend, I slowwed my fist or miss in purpose.(I have NO problem with hitting person on training).
      Arm locks, submissions and throws are dangerous too, I just feel like I can relay more on this kind weponary.
      I don't fear using it, because in my perspective it is not violence.
      He fell by himself I didn't help him THAT much, or hey he shouldn't move that direction, and now he have sore arm.

    • @davidesteban191
      @davidesteban191 7 років тому +1

      BilkoStan7 7 im in the 57kg division, so im pretty fast, but Im not that strong, just really fast and it's easy to me to knock out people because I train with the mass x speed = more mass x more force in mind, also I train my counters a lot because, as you may know if someone comes at you with 80kg of force then you Dodge and go at him with 70kg for example, the hit he receives has 150kg of pure strenght, also the more fast you hit, the more times the brain will bounce into the skull, fast hits even if they have strenght, they act more like a knife than a pummel, so if you hit the temple the damage goes through and right to the brain, with enough speed and decent force anyone will go down after 1-2 punches, I said this is compasive because in the ring sometimes you'll get to face opponents weaker than you, I saw a guy that gave up the fight because he felt pity for the other guy and I thought, how disrespectful this guy is why does he have to damage his pride like this? So in that kind of situation you want to knock your opponent in the shortest time possible in order to show respect and make him go down as a fighter, the same goes for me in the streets if I happen to fight because, if the fight gets too long and by instinct I end up kicking a guy's head I could probably kill him or leave him with several damage that may cost him his happiness
