I bring a slim notebook with me and write on one side of the page. Afterwards I use those pages in my travel journal. Even if my writing is messy because I’m not writing at a desk or table I do it and that does make the journal more “authentic.” I collect travel ephemera and take photos. I put it all together when I get home.
That's such a good idea! Journaling about a trip days/weeks after I've come back home has never worked well for me even when I take notes during the trip. But I can never find the time to journal "properly" during my travels either. You've just presented me with the perfect solution for my dilemma, thank you! 😄
I've never taken a trip long enough to have an entire travel journal for said trip, but I really like doing spreads in my everyday bullet journal whenever I get to visit a new place. I really enjoy collecting postcards, passes and pamphlets too! Your journal turned out lovely and it'll be an amazing thing to look back on in months and years to come 💕 Nice meeting your partner Chris in this video ☺ also, YES for the haul!
I'm thrilled I stumbled onto this video. I am newly widow from December. My son invited me to join him and family on their European trip. This will be my first time across the Atlantic. My husband and I were planning to travel after his retirement. I am a journaler and found the perfect notebook. I already had an idea as to how I am going to capture my trip and now you have given me more ideas! 😊 My husband bought me an Ivy printer. It didn't dawn on me to take it along. I better stock up on paper. Thank you for sharing all these great tips and suggestions. Grabbing pamphlets is also gold! My memories will be full, bittersweet but full. Thanks again. God bless.
Oh Nancy, I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m glad my little video could help you get prepared for journaling your adventure. I hope you have a wonderful time 💕
I love the tip about not being afraid to be messy or making mistakes 🥰 I have quick travel journal entries from last year that looked like a complete mess at the time I was making them, but as I flip through them now, I found that I actually don't mind the mess too much. It's the collection of words and mementos that make it lovely 😊
Bring less stationary and more adhesive is a great piece advice. I recently went on my first post-Covid holiday and whist I enjoy scrapbooking/journaling I knew I would be seriously lacking in spare energy to do it on the trip so I collected lots of stuff, used my time management app (plus any photos I took)to give me an idea what else I did and stuck it when I got home.
Aaahhh...so good! Up until morning I was thinking "I'm not going to journal on my UK trip this time." Now I'm ordering Ivy printer paper, sorting pens and figuring out which journal to use. Thanks for the inspo, Erin! Travel journals truly are the best souvenir you can bring home with you. Much love to you and glad you had such a wonderful time!
I’m a terrible influence 🤣 but also you are the QUEEN of minimalism so you will pack really smart! If you do journal it, I definitely want to see 😍 (but also no pressure!)
I'm going to be SO so honest and probably overly emotional here - I'm awful at journaling, but I really want to start because I have a massive 3.5 month Europe/UK trip coming up this winter that I want to document since I've been forgetting more and more details of trips lately, but every single 'travel journal' video I've watched has felt so inaccessible or unattainable for someone who doesn't already keep a consistent bullet/memory journal that I've been starting to get a bit discouraged. Yours is THE FIRST video I've watched that actually made me feel like this is possible and doable for me, as well as helped to adjust my mentality on the entire process. The vlog/journaling combination was wonderful, and I'm excited to be visiting a few of the same places you went around the same time you both were there as well! (It's shown me I'll definitely be needing my winter coat for Geneva, hahah) Anyway, I know this was most likely far too personal for a youtube comment, but I just wanted to sincerely thank you for this video!
Your comment means the world to me 💕 you can absolutely do it! The memories are more important than the journal aesthetic. I hope you have the best time on your trip, and documenting it!!

we just returned from two weeks in europe and I've started taking a small disc bound journal with me. (about the size of a mini happy planner). I divide it into sections and can move the extra pages to where they belong. I do a really detailed cost breakdown and then can summarize it when I get home. My daughter couldn't believe that I brought a couple of glue sticks. And I bring mini scissors on the plane all the time. I'm surprised but I'll keep bringing them until they are confiscated. I didn't bring a printer this time as we went very minimalistic. (carry on only for two weeks!). However I've done that in the past. I have a whole zip lock bag of pamphlets that didn't make it into the journal but will into the scrapbook when I get home.
thank you so much, Erin this was wonderful! I was thinking to perhaps add a list of numbers...if a cell phone is stolen etc, a list of insurance tel numbers etc, etc Huge thanks for this amazing video
Hi Erin! I really enjoyed how you put together this video 😊 I only use one bullet journal, so I use my memories pages (which I create in the end of each month) to do my scrapbooking / photos/ writing memories of the month. I travel a lot and I usually write everything down on my phone and when I get home I transfer all to my notebook. Sending you a big hug xoxo

Its very satisfying to finish a notebook with ur precious memories and its a great trip memento to keep for years to come.

Thank you so much! If you have some pretty photos or stickers or anything else you plan to use, I recommend just decorating your first page or spread - don’t set out with the intention to write, but leave space for it. It will get you thinking about your memories there, and you might find you really want to pick up a pen next! And even if you don’t, that page is ready when you are 🥰

Glad you got your cat fix 😊 also... was that a silent /no talking area on a train? Brilliant idea 💡 . Looking forward to the next video ❤️
Yes it is. In Italy some trains (usually those who travel long distances) have silent carriages. I love them, they are very comfortable. Reading your comment is a little strange because I thought it was common in all trains but perhaps we have to create a silen area because sometimes we Italians are noisy😂
Haha we do get very pumped about snow! We do have snow fields in Aus (about 10hrs drive south from us) but the snow is kind of hard and icy, not soft and powdery like this! And YES that was the Frecciarossa bullet train from Rome to Venice and we picked the silent carriage! Such a blessing to us introverts 😂
Glad you had a good time in Europe!!! And now I know that I need such a cute little printer for my next trip - saves me all the journaling at home, when I have finally been able to print all the pics and know how much space I need. 🤷♀️🙈
Loving the Travel Journal + vlog! This was so fun. Def gonna remember the “your memories don’t have to be perfect…” line. Such a great video! And looks like you had the most amazing trip!!! Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and journal from your trip. So looking forward to seeing a video of your European stationary haul. I would be so interested to see that. 😊

aaaah this is so magical!!! 💌Next time I travel, i am also doing a journal for sure!! I feel like it not only helps you have all those memories together in one place after time passes by, but while you are ON the trip, sitting down a few minutes every night to journal makes one be more mindful and genuinely recall and enjoy those magical little moments 🥰🥰🥰🥰 I am so glad for you you enjoyed so much your trip 💜💜💜💜💜💜 and plsss by all means do a stationary haul 🙈🙈
Lovely video Erin, and your journal looks great - what a fantastic keepsake from your travels! I also always collect bits of paper everywhere I go, whatever I can get my hands on! @@ErinSmith I am slowly making my way through all the videos. I like all of them but the reading journal ones are my favourites but I do like watching your other journal videos as well because I love seeing what you do with the pages 🥰
Hi Erin, lovely video! I’ve been following your trip through Instagram and I was super excited to see how your experiences were reflected on your travel journal. Aaaaaalso, I just want to say that I think it was months ago that I saw you use a Sprocket and then I started doing research and gifted myself one for Christmas (the newest version), so that tip about Canon paper is super useful!
I’m so glad I could help Antonella! I’m not sure if it’s the case in other places but the official Sprocket paper is a lot more expensive in Australia! I’ll link you to the Reddit thread where I first read about using the Canon paper instead, there are some fun comparisons for colour accuracy! www.reddit.com/r/Journaling/comments/dxfmbj/for_those_who_print_photos_for_their_journal_my/?
Hey Erin! I love all of your videos and you have been such an inspiration to me! I heard you mention they do not make the hp sprocket anymore. I was able to order one off of Amazon. I just wanted to let you know.
It’s so hard balancing a love of travel with precious fur children! We tend to go for longer trips, but take them less often - like one trip every few years. It takes so freaking long to get to places like Europe or the US from Australia, so you spend two of your travel days just getting to your destination and then getting home 😅
Hi Erin! I absolutely love everything about this video!!! Thank you for sharing it. My husband and I just got back from a 3week European trip and I so wish I would have come across your video before we left. What a bummer! However, you’ve given me so many ideas for capturing our trip. Thank goodness I brought back a lot of little paper brochures and such! Thank you again for sharing! By the way, could you please tell me if your sprocket is printing in 3” x 4” pictures or is it printing in a 2”x 3” pictures? I like to buy one but would like your recommendation on which size is better. Thanks in advance for your response.😊😊😊
Ohh Monica I’m so glad you enjoyed the video! You can still make a beautiful travel journal while your memories are fresh! 😍 I have the 2x3 Sprocket, which was great in my little below-average-size journal. I haven’t tried the bigger one but I like the 2x3 for A5 size journals and smaller!
Hi@@ErinSmith Thank you so much for your advice! My birthday is on Sunday and that's on my list!!! Yea!! I am a new follower of yours and I just love your content! Keep up the good work!
The flip through or while we were travelling? For the flip through, I have a tripod with a built-in boom arm. While we were travelling, I got my boyfriend to hold the camera for me 😂
it's funny that you use HP printer but Canon paper. I used Canon IVY(not exact ly ivy, but the older version) and always use HP paper because where I live, Canon paper is always the most expensive while HP is often the cheapest (sometimes the Chinese brand like Xiaomi and Huawei can be cheaper when they are on sale).
Thank you so much for your interesting video. So useful for our upcoming trip. Two questions please: how many pages does your journal have? I'm not technically savvy...so excuse the question, but so you take videos on your cel phone or do you have a separate device. I loved your video and would like to copy the idea. ( excuse the potentially silly question)
There’s no such thing as a silly question 😘 my journal has 160 pages, which was perfect for the length of my trip (just over a month) and the kind of journaling I was doing! The video clips here are a mix of videos I shot on my iPhone and videos I shot on my Lumix G9 camera. When I’m not making journaling videos I work as a photographer so I always take a camera with me when I travel! You could absolutely do something similar with only phone footage though! I hope that helps!

Ohhh Hillary a LITTLE ADVENTURES JOURNAL!! What a magical idea! Extra special that you're making it yourself too, how amazing!
@@ErinSmith I’m a little obsessed now! I’m going to get the stuff to make more! I think I’ll give them as gifts to the ladies in my family!
I would love to see your haul.
The editing & intro to this video is immediately captivating & inspiring me to make my own. Well done Maika 😉
I would love to see a video of your travels Brock! The adventures you've had, it would be amazing!
what a nifty printer!
It’s really good for this kind of thing! 🥰
I LOVED this video so much, thank you for sharing your adventures. I know I am late to the party.
I’m so glad Sharon! Thank you for watching 💕

Hey Erin! I love all of your videos and you have been such an inspiration to me! I heard you mention they do not make the hp sprocket anymore. I was able to order one off of Amazon. I just wanted to let you know.
Thanks Susanna! I should have been clearer, they don’t make the one I have anymore!
I love this video😊
🥰🥰🥰
Commenting just to help with the algorithme 😊 keep up de great work
🥹 thank you so much!
Im very impressed 😍
🥰🥰🥰
I was away from my dog and cats for 2 days and i couldn't wait to get back..id live to travel but i dk if i could be away a week tops
How did you get the overhead shots of you journaling?
The flip through or while we were travelling? For the flip through, I have a tripod with a built-in boom arm. While we were travelling, I got my boyfriend to hold the camera for me 😂
it's funny that you use HP printer but Canon paper. I used Canon IVY(not exact ly ivy, but the older version) and always use HP paper because where I live, Canon paper is always the most expensive while HP is often the cheapest (sometimes the Chinese brand like Xiaomi and Huawei can be cheaper when they are on sale).
Isn't it funny how different it is around the world! Whatever works haha
Love your travel journaling did you visit Iceland in this trip?
I didn’t Sjofn - I would love to visit Iceland one day though! 😍
@@ErinSmith you are so welcome to come to Iceland its a very special land. We have beautiful landscape and rivers and waterfalls its short to the go and forget you are in the middle of the City. There is a waiting for a eruption. Should be soon they say. Now its just part of life when and where will it erupt hope you will come when you will xxx

This was such a great video! I loved all the tips and the part where you were in Rome searching for cats 😂
Haha thank you so much Maria! I do love meeting new cats 😂
