Ralph Swartz, as I recall, the morning of this race, Nascar required the teams to cut an inch or two off the bottom of their front air dams, which really bunched up the field & made for some great racing. I attended the Winston 500 the same year.
Its amazing how much side drafting Earnhardt was doing g back then and nobody knew he was doing it. Now days they all do it.. He was deff ahead of his time. Helluva driver....
That was exactly my thought. Earnhardt twice side drafts Davey, and that was the difference in the race. Davey was just about to clear Earnhardt when Dale got right alongside Davey's right-rear, and pushed all that air onto Davey's spoiler. It's an amazing feat of driving, one that we've gotten use to now. But in 1991 no one else was doing that- and it wouldn't really be until 20+ years later that we started to understand why it worked so well. Dale wasn't just ahead of the competition, he was ahead by decades.
Was at this race, used to go to dega alot and believe me to say it was Earnhardt country would be a understatement. I went to alot of races back and these days and there were always alot of 3 fans but Talladega was nothing but Earnhardt fans. I believe the few fans that wasn't 3 fans were scared to fly there colors down there they were serious about dale I tell you.
Earnhardt's use of the side draft against Davey was impressive. Today we have a much better understanding of how the side draft works, but Earnhardt was at least 20 years ahead of everyone else. As Davey tries to complete the pass, Dale twice puts his nose right alongside Davey's right rear, dumping air onto Davey's spoiler. You can see how that instantly pulls Davey back toward Earnhardt. It's subtle, but we see it all the time now because all the drivers know to do it. Back in 1991, Dale was in a class of his own.
This was my the first nascar race me and ten friends traveled from North Carolina to the race remember it was hot as hell that day forgot the heat once the race started had a ball that day
Yeah he said, I have the quote here "All we needed was like four or so inches to clear Earnhardt, when you trust another Ford driver they hang you out to dry, that's pitiful". Allison was a competitor.
@MartinWasRobbed1990 amen brother, both to your comment and your screenname. 1990 wasnt the only highway robbery committed at the expense of Mark Martin's good nature.
Chevy came up with the lumina name after the monte carlo by spelling it backwards with a u. So the ford drivers saw animul in their mirrors. Animul. Lumina. Cool hu?
I realize the current NASCAR cars are, objectively, better in every way in terms of performance, safety, etc. But they've never been able to come up with a anything in all their newer cars that gives us better racing than this early-90s package on the plate tracks. People weren't running in 30-car trains the whole time so there were fewer Big Ones, but nobody could run off and hide. There's enough space in between the cars there so they can actually race and dice without killing each other. Personally I think one of the worse things they ever did to a plate package was line up the bumpers so they could push. Now it's all tail-to-nose all the way back and one false move takes out 25 cars.
I was at this race. I was an Earnhardt fan and my dad was an Allison fan. I gave my dad a hard time all the way back home after this race. :)
I was there to watch that race! I paid for the seats and rarely sat down in them! It was that exciting! I miss those days.

Back when the stands were full, and the racing was exciting!
I mean... the current superspeedway package makes the racing exciting.
@@collinghood6828 - you must be a new fan! 🤣🤣
@@tose917 how? The 2019-2020 Superspeedway package was good, until Logano complained and it’s back to crap

Love that music at the end...

Keep up with all of the classic NASCAR action!
Having lapped cars start in the back and not at the front inside line was one of the best changes NASCAR ever did.
My first NASCAR race. 10 years old. I had never seen anything as big as that track. Great memories.

Good to hear Ned excited.
The folks don’t call races like they used to!!!!!
Back when NASCAR was interesting and didn't suck.
That's why they call him The Intimidator!!!
Yeah he said, I have the quote here "All we needed was like four or so inches to clear Earnhardt, when you trust another Ford driver they hang you out to dry, that's pitiful". Allison was a competitor.
This is NASCAR, not the BS WWE version we have now.
Brian France belongs in jail.
We should give Brian France to the Catholic Nun's, they can beat him with ruler's
When they use to race!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great Race ! Geez Dale !
Good luck passing the old man on last lap at Talladega.
Davey Allison went from 5th to 1st on the last lap to beat Earnhardt at Talladega in the IROC series. It wasn't as difficult as you think.
@@jasonwiggins6137 yup I remember that IROC race... when they all had "Equal" cars.
@@joellajuett1060
All the cars being equal explains why Dale was a 4 time IROC champion.
Anyone have a video of the finish to the 1990 Diehard 500? I believe Jimmy Spencer flipped over at the finish in that one.
“But The Intimidator will not be denied”
They’ll never be a real #3 again The Great Intimidator....... Dale Earnhardt RIP
It was GREAT BEFORE the restrictor plates. 200mph+
2:54😍😍😍😚
Back when racing was racing.
Keep loading the classic nascar videos dude!!!
@TheCougarFrom1983 Pretty much agree with you except that I feel the decline began after the 1996 season.
Not until about 2000 or a few years after
Decline after 96 Talladega wreck. Did more damage than was told.
Was there
If I remember right, this was a Monday race after a Sunday rainout.
Nope I was wrong. This is the Summer race in July. The rainout was the Spring race.
When all the great drivers either died or retired NASCAR has been in a downward swirl, it's coming to a end and we all know it...
😥😫😪🤤😤😨😢😭
sooner the better . its all Don Johnson impersonators anyway .

Same finish as the year before, thinking it was M. Waltrip in 2nd 4 car breakaway also.
why was Allison mad?

It sucks today! NASCAR was it's best from 1991 through 1994 and it's been down hill ever since.
It was great up until Earnhardt's death in 2001
The 80s were kick ass
👍
Wow! Best driver ever! Since Petty's heyday
Yeah, now I see why Davey was frustrated.
double file restart in 91? What kind of black magic is this?
Storm Sliders Back then lead lap cars restarted on the outside line while lapped cars restarted on the inside.
i disagree, after 2001 it went down hill... loss of #3 and the birth of giant corporations getting into nascar.
We won't see nascar like that anymore, I won't be watching the Daytona 500 this year.
The MAN! Forever!
That was real NASCAR plate racing, not the heat racing and next gen garbage.
Nascar died with dale earnhardt sr
look....no dumbshit burnouts.
I fucking hate this comments section
Had I know Earnhardt won I'd have never watched
