I very much enjoyed doing this podcast with Zack and Spurge, but realized that I'd somehow given my age as 67 rather than 76. This is the sort of thing that happens when you're hopelessly bad at math, seriously dyslexic--and 76 years old. I also suffered a moment of brain fade in describing an off-road motorcycle trip in South Dakota calling our route the Trail of Tears, rather than the trail to the massacre site at Wounded Knee. The Trail of Tears, of course, was the forced exodus of the Cherokee and other tribes from the Southeastern U.S. to Indian Territory west of the Mississippi.
Thanks again to Zack and Spurge for the kind introduction and for coming up with a good set of topics and questions and keeping me on track --even though I'm 76. Or whatever. I soon hope to discuss guitars further with Spurge.
    Peter Egan

Peter, I have to say that your piece "Snow place for a motorcycle" will always be my favorite. Stationed at Minot AFB, ND a friend and I took advantage of a warm October morning and rode to the Montana border. Once there, those angry gray clouds appeared and it snowed. I arrived back at the base just as you described, colder than I'd ever been. I later read that short story and laughed so hard I it was perfectly written. I took your "Leanings" collection to Iraq in 2004 and it kept me optimistic about coming home. Thank you for your work. Happy to show you the beautiful roads of the mountains in Virginia if you're up to another themed adventure, anytime.

Many thousand, through many decades, lived vicariously through Peter Egan’s articles and gained courage to mount up an iron horse of their own dreams. Few things in life can provide one with the sense of freedom then spinning wheels of a motorcycle. But above all, a motorcycle is a great teaching tool to learn instant Karma!
Thank you for interviewing a true legend-

I'll be 64 next week, and here I am geeking out like a teenager. I began reading Peter Egan from his beginning at Cycle World and Road&Track magazines, and later in the multiple compilation books. His occasional mention of aviation and trips in his personal Piper Cub and the music and guitars were welcome bonuses that spoke to a couple of my other interests. I even felt a distant kinship when in the summer of 1982 we both toured around Europe on midsize Japanese fours, Mr.Egan on a rented Suzuki GS650G Katana, me on my Yamaha XJ650RJC Seca which I had flown over. It's great to listen to him in person. I'm old enough to have ridden a Bridgestone, a 175, with its odd rotary gear change that took it right back to 1st if you accidentally upshifted from top (4th, if I remember correctly).

The Legend. I have read so much from Peter over the past 40+ years. Decades of R&T magazines piled up in the basement along with a lifetime of Cycle World, Cycle, amd Motorcyclist. So many memories of reading his stories and seeing his adventures in full colour through his eyes! Thanks for bringing this man on HS/LS. 😊

I found an old letter that I wanted to send to Peter in the mid-90s when I was in college. It basically said, "Hey, can I come live on the farm with you and Barb as a writing / mechanical intern?" Never had the guts to send it, but he definitely inspired my motorcycle adventures. Just came back from Colombia last week.

I am always eager for a new episode of HS/LS but you add the name Peter Egan and it makes me practically giddy with excitement! Let's go fellas! That was one of, if not, the most eloquent introductions I have ever heard Spurge make on Highside/Lowside. I'm not surprised, guitars are just as cool as motorcycles. WHAT!? Mrs. Spurge is expecting, now that's a whole nuther podcast! Congratulations to you both! May your first child be a masculine child, Spurgeon Dunbar the third coming soon lol! Not much to say here except I could listen to Mr. Egans' stories all day. He very much reminds me of Lance Oliver. In fact, I think they should do a podcast together "The Silver Foxes Motorcycle Podcast!" that would be epic! Sounds like 1971 Super Beetle to me but I know that's not right lol! Maybe a BSA but I'm assuming my losing streak continues. Ending a sentence in a preposition is still better than dangling your participle! Happy belated Birthday to fellow Aries Spurgeon Dunbar! Another fine show old sports looking forward to seeing you in 2!

I am known among my friends and family as a voracious reader. For much of my 57 years on this little rock that we live on, I've been reading practically everything that has fallen into my greedy hands, no matter what it's about. I've probably read the output of hundreds, maybe thousands of wordsmiths.
I often get asked who my favourite writer is. I dread the question because there are so many that I love and admire, so it's a waking nightmare for old indecisive me to choose one or even a few.
However, one name that ALWAYS figures in my list is PETER EGAN!
    Thank you, sir! 🙏🏽

I agree! I think it should include Spencer and Spurg, as well as Zack and Ari. My reasons? 1. To get Spurg in on the fun, and 2. Because I think Spencer could give the bunch of them a run for their money when it comes to finding a reasonable old used bike for $1/cc that will be able to accomplish whatever goals and tasks they set for themselves..... as Nike says, "JUST DO IT."

I started reading Peter Egan in R&T in Australia in '97 as a kid (I still have the magazine on the bookshelf) I got to me by boat. It was the start of a love of the experience that of design being a value you bring into your life. And the fun that developing your understanding of the mechanical. It never occured to me that people wouldn't have read his works to you gave the reference to his works collections. I have read his columns to my 2 year, make it feel like i am an old man with pile of magazines wishing other could find that joy in a world view that has changed mine world view.

The last Cycle World I bought off the stands was in the 1980's. I have only returned to motorcycling in my '60s as I near retirement. I was actually starting to think I would never ride again. I realize that I'm not getting any younger and his comment about the RE Himalayan was spot on. I am not a dirt rider (though that's where I started riding) so my choice was a Kawasaki Vulcan S. So far, it's just been a blast. My wife tolerates my motorcycle obsession as long as I wear the gear and ride reasonably. I do... Mostly. I can pick this bike up if I drop the thing. I can also grab the thing if things go squirrelly on me in a parking lot..
The look back at those days was fascinating. I bought my first true street motorcycle in 1987. It was a Yamaha YX600 Radian. That was a terrific introduction to street riding and taught me what I needed to survive. I remember reading about the ZX10, GSX-R 750 of those days. I ultimately realized that, if it does what you want, any motorcycle can be a lot of fun. That's what we ride for.

A simple, relatively cheap, and effective solution to motorcycle theft is to replace the fuel pump relay with a Bluetooth controlled relay.
This will stop the theft short of folks that are using a pickup. But, some might find it annoying that they have to enter a pin or use the app, every time they want to go for a ride. I can't speak to the options offered by the relay manufacturers though, but some may have automatic proximity capabilities. I would stick with a PIN option if there's ever going to be a time when someone else is going to ride it, or if your bike is parked within 30ft or so from your home...
You can also get a kit that has a relay that can be activated with included key fobs, designed for doing exactly this sort of thing...
