You can do bangs you can do no bangs. How'd you get so dope? Thumbnail inspiration is a good one that I didn't know for a long time. My tip is to always think about depth. Slightly blur your background or sometimes mute the colors, and for the object or person in the foreground, put a shadow on it and make an outline around it so it makes it stand out. and also use close ups and enlarge text (no more than 4 or 5 words). Don't leave too much empty space.
VANESSA! These tips are amazing!! I recently noticed in my analytics that my watch hours are quite high for the amount of views I have and someone said it's probably because my thumbnails aren't appealing enough to attract viewers but the viewers who do watch love the videos so much they watch it all the way through. I'm implementing these steps right NEOWWW!
Great video, I never knew that thumbnails can help so much with gaining popularity... but I guess you learn every day as a content creator. Nowadays though I believe that the best option, for going viral as soon as possible, is to start doing more Shorts. People don't have attention span for anything longer, so I try creating expressive and concise content (and after I post it, I use a lot of Famester to make it go viral and the content gets spread out literally everywhere. It works on multiple social media platforms as well).
I’ve been using canva and didn’t know about all these features. Thank you for a very helpful and detailed tutorial! Thumbnails are so hard to not make too busy but still catch someone’s eye. Much appreciation here! 😊🐝
Very helpful advice. You can tell how much work you put into your thumbnails. As a graphic designer, it is basically design work to me, although as a future UA-camr I need to learn to hire out more even though I can do it myself as I have a lot on my plate. Hopefully when I earn more. Saved to my "wroth rewatching" playlist. Thanks :)
I just started my channel about books & makeup and I’ve been struggling with the thumbnails so far. This is very helpful. Thank you so much Vanessa and you have just got a new subscriber 💕
very cool. quite similar to what I do but I do it with photoshop and it seems like canvas is much faster and more tailored fo this type of work (not to mention much cheaper)! One extra thing I do worth mentioning is for your test sheet where you test your thumbs on your page, I have a test sheet that I populate with other top videos on the topic I''m targeting to make sure my thumb really stands out among competition, and my test sheet I make sure to do a swipe test on mobile since over 80% of yt viewers are on mobile.
I used to do so much of this until I realized that my photographer and I really tell a story through our sessions so now I use my photos as my thumbnails. I haven’t done this long enough to see if it works or not but it’ll definitely make my channel look more clean and put together
Awesome video. I believe the most essential part of the thumbnal is the text. If you can come up with a 3-5 phrase or subtext that perfectly captures the topic and engages the viewer to click on your video, you'll blow up extremely quickly. The more catchy it is, the better for you. Also, a good rule of thumb is to make sure your thumbnail is different from your title. It's like a second title in a sense.
I was using the templates on Canva all the time and some templates are not so flexible to replace a portion of it with my own pic. This helps a lot so I know how to create my own from scratch.
Vanessa! Amazing tips! I struggle with thumbnails so much because my videos vary from closeups of tools to big projects like building a cabinet. I never thought of using ChatGPT like that for inspiration. I also never thought of using pages in Canva for comparison. Do you use the same canva file for every thumbnail? Seems really efficient! Thanks so much for sharing. I need to save this video. I will be using it a lot!
Thank you Vanessa, I e been making “better” thumbnails the last year or so, my vids always do better when I take time to get them just right. Beauty niche is HARD, but your tips are excellent.
Another fantastic thumbnail making video Vanessa and thanks 👍 for the tips and suggestions for creating thumbnails for our UA-cam videos. Love 🥰the video and not surprised Canva is mentioned because it's an awesome app. Love 💕 Vanessa.
Great video Vanessa! The information you shared is very helpful. I like the suggestion you made about using Chat GPT to help us when we struggle to come up with text for our thumbnails. This is an issue that I have. After watching this video I plan on using Chat GPT to help me when I struggle to come with text to put in my thumbnails. Thanks Vanessa for making this video!
14:53 Ok but like I'm really confused, I am monetized on youtube, but if I end up spending 60$ a month I will only have 40 left since for some reason I only get 100$ from youtube each month. I'm not sure why that is since I know people earn thousands 😭 my videos actually get decent views, is it just that youtube is giving me a lower rpm? can it be because of the country the channel was created from? my audience is still divided between US, Canada, Australia, and Uk tho. if anyone knows anything please explain :(
@@AngelGrey_ could be the niche, channels like real estate, business, finance etc tend to have advertisers that pay more. Also it does take many views and many videos that get good views to make thousands per month on UA-cam! One thing to help with optimizing your videos especially if you have the time is experimenting with A/B testing to try and repackage some of our videos that could be doing better!
I would say don't spend money on thumbnails if it doesn't make sense financially at the moment. Your thumbnails are pretty good from what I can tell, but maybe check this out: VidIQ does live thumbnail reviews every Wednesday, maybe you could submit and get some tips on improving. Also they have a discord with people trying to help each other and stuff. I really don't have a lot of first hand knowledge of monetizing strategies yet, but I'm pretty sure you want to diversify income streams. So some money from UA-cam adsense, getting sponsorships with companies that align with your brand, custom products / patreon etc. Best of luck to you!

The transparent overlay tip in Canva was super helpful, I’ll definitely be trying this out!

this is similar to me right now and it's what I've heard too. I came here to get these fine tune details on improving my thumbnails!

Canvas got some cool features. Is there a way to manage all of the layers easily?
A/B testing definitely helps, not making but for testing the styles.. wish it would been an option sooner but better late than never 😊
It’s amazing that we live in a time where you can get a better education on UA-cam than at Harvard and it’s free. Thank you, Vanessa.
Awesome thumbnails indeed❤❤❤. Thanks for Vanessa
I just started my channel about books & makeup and I’ve been struggling with the thumbnails so far. This is very helpful. Thank you so much Vanessa and you have just got a new subscriber 💕

Nice review... ❤️❤️❤️❤️
You look the cutest in this setup. Whatever you've done with the makeup!

Such a helpful video!! Especially with the ChatGPT prompts. Thanks for the detail walk through!!
Just used this for my second video that I just uploaded, perfect timing💛
Hi Vanessa, thank you so much for these useful videos! I hope you will make something similar for Pinterest or Instagram as well! 😊
I was using the templates on Canva all the time and some templates are not so flexible to replace a portion of it with my own pic. This helps a lot so I know how to create my own from scratch.
What size do you use because every time I use the thumbnail templates in Canva it always says the file is too big
Can't find font Bartender in Canva. Is this a custom font? Thank you for all the valuable content you share with us.
Ooo I think it is. You can download it for free and upload it to canva if u have Canva pro I believe
Breaking the thumbnail pattern 😅 that was a quick tip I’m glad I noticed!!!
This was so helpful 🙌🏼🙏🏽! Looking forward to improve my thumbnails

Are these editing tools available on the free version or do we need to pay? Thanks.
Thank you Vanessa, I e been making “better” thumbnails the last year or so, my vids always do better when I take time to get them just right. Beauty niche is HARD, but your tips are excellent.
