"Not knowing, i am pillowed among the crags on Kamo Mountain,
my wife must still be waiting for my return.
'Today, today!' each day I have waited for you,
and now do they not say you are strewn with the shells of Ishi River?
Love is simply a sad lament,
i sing to the clouds as they pass the Ishi River."

Spectacular. This OVA has needed a proper retrospective for so long. So many people take it at face value but it's had such a profound effect on me for most of my life now.

You've put everything I ever thought about this series into better words than I could. Also, as far as soundtracks go, Jazz is incredibly well suited to chaotic action sequences and moodier scenes in a way a lot of genres aren't, while being able to transition between those two modes in ways other genres really can't. However, it also requires a really talented band and sound designer to do right, and Blue Submarine No.6 is frankly one of the stand out series in any medium there, even considering the weirdly high standard for sound design in mecha anime.

Love the review and appreciate the time and care your put into it! Personally I wasn't all too wowed with the CG( even back in the day) but was more impressed with Zorndykes beautiful children! Their alluring designs and creativity( Verg, Mutio, Red Spot, etc) had me staring at the screen and admiring it artistry!

I'm one of those stupid guy who watches this for awesome mecha and submarine fight scenes at night while feeling asleep and completely forgot about the whole story and plot. Even forgot about the existence of this OVA if I didn't find your review.
Thanks for reminding me this, gonna have to rewatch it, wide awake this time.

watching through this, I think ironically of avatar the way of water. I agree that those films unnecessarily use harmful tropes and ideas (anarcho-primitivism, the “noble savage”, the white savior) and they really oughta cut that shit out. (I’m hoping that they reveal that the na’vi are technologically capable and that their queues are some kind of technological evolution à la Gundam-esque newtypes. Maybe that’s all just a pipe dream.) through all their flaws, those avatar movies are sincere pleas to care about and care for and be in awe of our oceans and the natural environment. AND they have some very cool mechanical designs.

Interestingly enough Zorndyke's real master plan is kinda similar to the Master from Fallout 1. In a completely altered world where the ways of old can no longer come back, both individuals went for the evolutionary species approach, with the beastmen being more suited to the new flooded world and super mutants being more suited to the heavily irradiated and mutant-infested world of post-war California. Zorndyke on the other hand actually came to this conclusion without even becoming what he created essentially, which I'll admit makes him more intriguing since it's harder to admit that your own species is basically getting the short end of the deal. Richard Moreau only went for the evolution route after he himself realizing what he managed to achieve AFTER becoming what is essentially a candidate for humanity's successor. I'll also concur that Zorndyke's nuke baiting strat is indeed pretty big brain.
Also this sounds like some enjoyable environmentalist propaganda there indeed, but do the genes splice? There's a lot of people that would be interested in the answer for more "practical" purposes.

Maybe if a sequel to BS6 comes out, the villains will be like the Enclave from Fallout 2: a paramilitary organization representing a former world power, that is trying to maintain a strong foothold in this changed world, while simultaneously oppressing the Mutant/Chimeran population and anyone that associates with them.

Another thing I'd like to mention is about the CGI. A lot of people say it's distracting, that it hasn't aged well, etc. Personally, I think it works in that it makes the Kumos and Musucas in the OVA look absolutely creepy and alien-looking. Like they just don't belong in that world.

Amazing video. Such wonderful insight like I've never seen before. Just a few things, though.
1: Where did you get all this information about the manga from? I'm working on a fanfiction that continues where the OVA left off, and I'm thinking about incorporating more elements from the manga as my story progresses, as I've done with the video game tie-ins that came out for the OVA.
2: Zorndyke came from Albania. If you want to know anymore about the other characters, there's a great fansite called The Blue Dome, which can be found at this link: ticktank.wordpress.com
3: BS6 really should've been a TV show, with at least 13 episodes covering the events of the OVA and everything leading up to it. It felt like there was a lot of stuff that wasn't properly explained. While I still enjoy what it did offer us, it still left you wanting more.
For example, I feel like the Hayami/Mutio relationship should've been expanded on more, especially in the fourth episode. They were setting their saving each other up to be a big deal in the previous episodes, only for it to be all-but forgotten at the end; Not once does Hayami mention Mutio to Zorndyke once he meets them, and we never find out if Hayami and Mutio ever got together in the end.

      In order:
      Thanks!
1: A lot of the background on the mangaka and manga comes from space battleship Yamato fan sites that compiled information on many things. That and in part partially translated elements of the original BSn6 mange, the original manga is quite different from the 90's OVA, the 90's OVA is very much a spiritual re-imagining and re-invention of the setting. For example in the original story Zorndyke's goal was economic power by devaluing the world economy by sabotaging shipping as opposed to any big environmentalism thing really.
2:Thanks, Zorndyke's background i think is very rooted in the dark period that was the mid-90's for eastern Europe during the Balkan wars, Albania really is right in that ballpark.
3:While it is tempting to want more from it's setting, i really can't say as it is now it is lacking, it is basically a movie-in-OVA form, but it is squarely paced like a movie in terms of its 1rs-wnd-3rd act etc.
And yeah its world is really quite cool, and i would love to see more, but as is i think the message it sends is delivered if you are patient and take it in.
Mutio is a bit rough, if you look at her arc from the idea of her as a character, it is basically done with when she sees her sister dead after the Tokyo attack, she realizes that humans are not this singularly evil race, and basically freaks out. After that point her saving Hayami has more to do with him seeing the beastmen for what they are, its more about his arc.
I would perhaps have liked one more scene at the end, but he does not mention her because she is not important, Zorndyke already quickly gets that Hayami understands his plan, if Hayami also said "Yeah and i met a fish girl and she was cool" it would not really change much. That final episode/act is really about Zorndyke and the human-nature relationship, beyond any characters. And im pretty confident Hayami ends up with Kino or at the very least does not end up with Mutio, Mutio and Hayami's relationship is not one i see as being there for just some exotic romantic thing, its really there to say mutual understanding between humans as humans, and beastmen as beastmen, is possible and is the ideal path to peace and balance. Hayami ending up with Mutio would be more akin to him throwing away all that human identity like he ponders when he thinks about the blue flooded world in episode/act 3, its tempting but its not what he ends up doing because he needs to confront Zorndyke on behalf of a more reasonable humankind.

      1: Okay, thanks.
2: I think that it would be a lot more recent than the Balkan conflicts of the 90s. Based on the information that The Blue Dome has to offer, the OVA takes place during the mid-21st century, so it would probably be around that period Zorndyke's family was killed, and he was driven to flood the world.
3: Okay, you clearly have your own interpretation of Mutio's role in the story thought out, which I greatly admire. Though I'd still argue that she deserved some proper closure with her story arc, since even though she has a big role in the earlier episodes, she's basically swept under the rug after the first scene of episode 4 and didn't show up again until the very end. I think the fact that Hayami saved Mutio, and vice-versa, was very important, since not only was it the reason Hayami didn't get killed when Blue Dome was attacked, but it showed that there could be cooperation between the two races. The fact that Hayami never mentions it to Zorndyke really makes Mutio's role seem less significant than it really is. Also, why was Mutio being held captive on the Phantom Ship when Verg had already banished her? Isn't that a waste of resources to keep her aboard instead of having her leave?
Anyway, I don't mean to advertise fanfiction (much less fanfiction I wrote myself), but if you're interested in checking out that story I'm working on, it's called "Blue Submarine No. 6: The Atlantic War". It continues the story, has a lot of new characters, adds a whole bunch of world-building and themes that I think fit the world of the OVA, and it's been very well-received by fans of the show. And I also consider it the best story I've ever written. Here's the link, if you ever get around to reading it.

For 2:, i dont mean literally actually, so much as what the creators were likely drawing from when they wrote and made the work, any piece of media is somewhat context bound in when it was written. Just as a story written after 9/11 focusing around a terrorist attack on a majour city with a plane would make people think of 9/11, Zorndyke being from the Balkans and Blue Subs story coming from the late 90's is what i mean by same ballpark, the genocide of Bosnians is going to be the most direct comparison when some one like Zorndyke talks about bodies in hole.
For 3, i dont entirely disagree on the conclusion bit per say, one more scene or some closure would have been nice if just to end off on for that character in particular.
The main thing i mean with Hayami and Mutio is yes its a very core plot point and narrative moment when they in turn save each other, its just that for Zorndyke, one Mutio getting along with Hayami is not something that would greatly shift his opinion per say, Zorndyke's thinking is clearly on a "big picture" level, of dealing with the whole of human society and the world, so if Hayami mentioned Mutio, i get the feeling Zorndyke would say "Well that's nice." and not much more.
Hayami talking to Zorndyke is not just Hayami and Zorndyke as characters, Hayami is basically acting as a calmer level headed representative of humanity (in comparison to Kino who just wants revenge), and Hayami then basically figuring out Zorndyke's other option, the path towards co-existence and not the nuclear attack which would have doomed humankind. Mentioning Mutio i dont think would have shifted much, because Zorndyke i think already knew Hayami was level headed towards his plan.
Also because i think the best place for a conclusive scene for Mutio would have been after Zorndyke is dead and Verg is done beating the shit out of Hayami on the beach, as it would have further emphasized the Verg/Mutio-Kino/Hayami -peace/war duality.
and yeah, if i get in a blue sub mood again i might peek at that writing you did.

I find myself between hyperfocusing on technology and a personal "luditeism" doctrine. Not to say technology is "evil", but that it is often an extension of a "normative" system.
The way i use technology is as figurative "submarine", an escape normative from this "normative" system. I love doing experiments with LoRa or optimizing "obsolete" devices as media players or emulation/virtualization devices. Especially for my elderly relatives, older simple technology like a MP3 player is much better then any music streaming service. That's why i kinda of hate certain things about smartphones, really i all i want is a device to kept contacts with others while im away from home. But modern smartphones come pre installed with so bloat that keeps you in constant loop with the system. You can de-bloat alot of it or install a custom rom which is incompatible with most sim cards.
Im autistic and in a certain way i feel like if we really do need to create our culture and systems to counterbalance neurotyical systems. But right now most us are in still in our own little submarines we cut out for ourselves.
I don't know alot of this is very "first draft" but it felt important to say atleast.
