  • I'm owning Saito FA 170R3 approx 10 month's and was provide several dismantling and assembling back cycles, going to clean up the internals to achieve top engine condition. According to my experience gathered with Saito FA 170 R3, I should state. that this wonderful piece of machinery becomes my personal "Top of the tops" engines. I was newer meet so greatly looking, greatly sounding and very easy to operate engines.
Sadly to say - this engine hasn't been produced anymore.
I would definitely recommend this video for watching, due to the few clear reasons:
    1. Sound of 3 cylinder idling of Saito FA 170 R3 is simply amazing, really. The SOUND ! The sound of a real airplane multi cylinder 4 stroke engine.
    2. Ability to hold stable and very low idle. 800-900 RPM isn't a dream.
    3. In Golden Knight design, exterior look of the engine is fantastic. As far as I know, this is the only design option.
Thank you for watching CrazyEngines !

Hi,,, I am considering to get a Saito FA170 R3 (new in box and never run).
Did you ever managed to tune your engine properly ? or is it a design problem with the fuel delivery ?

Thank you for your question ! My opinion, that Saito FA 170R3 is really great engine, I wasn't not found any flaws, it tunes easily, as for me.There is one thing which could make your life easier (not only with this glow engine) but with the most of 4 stroke glow engines - use onboard glow driver support - it will eliminate a lot of sudden things which could happens !

@@crazyengines88 Nice to see your videos...
Yes I know about glow systems, but a high end engine brand like Saito does not design engines that should need in-flight glow system.. So my question is based on the fact that on your video the engine drops one cylinder many times and I presumed that it was not tuned properly. (as you mentioned it was set rich). So my question is... Did you manage to tune it so it does not drop on one cylinder ? It would also be interesting to know if you ever messured the temperature on cylinder one after tuning it. I am not sure if I want to spend another 2-300 USD just because Saito have missed something in their fuel delivery design.. I have several 4 stroke engines 1 and 2 cylinder,, none of them need in-flight glow system if/when fuel is tuned properly and valves are set correctly.

@@roki5941 Thank you, appreciate for your kind words. I must admit that I have not yet been able to understand what is the reason for the "dropping out" of one cylinder; I postponed the study of this phenomenon until the warmer times. I must say that many 3-cylinder engines from Saito (at least, FA 120R3, FA 170R3, FG 60R3, behave more or less the same, always one cylinder is hotter, there is always noticeably more carbon deposits in one cylinder, regardless of the type of ignition! Is there a glow driver or spark ignition - doesn't matters. Most likely, the problem is in the equal fuel mixture distribution among the cylinders, but I have yet to study this. Thanks for the good questions - it's a pleasure to answer them!

Thanks for sharing! I have just this one question, did you leave the battery connection ON all the time?

    • @crazyengines88
      @crazyengines88  4 роки тому

Yes, glow battery connected in this video. I think, that on board glow driver is needed in the most cases. In some videos glow battery disconnected after adjustment and warming up the engine.

Regrding your question - I'm using three wires combo wiring from Saito FA 170R3, so this wires are from the engine bundle.
They have splitted 2 tooth fork style bronse connector with soldered wire and with insulation PCV tybe over, sitting tightly on that assembly. You insert fork onto glow plug electrode (it's springy) and fix it with PCV tube.
That is how it works in my setup. If you are familiar with soldering and small mechanical works - you can DIY, if no so - nesessary to find some springy style connectors. You can use also small "croco - style" springy connectors, as well - it's a great amount with diff sizes in electrical outlets, shops, etc. Of course, "Croco - styled" connectors should have insulated caps or flexible insulation tybe over the handle.

@@crazyengines88 Perfectly there would be a way to see the connection between the spark plug and the engine assembly leads.
do you connect the black cable to the bench or to the support?

Thank you for your question. In the next videos I'll shot all wiring harness more detailed, so all connections and its' ways will be clearly visible. Just give me 1-2 days.
