Jet Engine Does Not Like Gasoline

  • A few viewers have suggested that I try to run a 50/50 mix of Gasoline and Diesel in the jet engine so I did and this is what it looks like.
    as you can see the jet engine did not like the gasoline at all, the only other thing in the mix was some turbine oil for the bearings. so 50% Gasoline, 50% Diesel and 5% Turbine Oil.

    Your turbine does in fact like gasoline, and will happily run on it. A turbine can use any liquid fuel you chuck at it.
    Your problem here is that gasoline is very volatile, so your turbine is drinking it too fast. You need to use the old Air Force trick, and cut your gas with 20-25% diesel. Try it, I promise it's working !

    • @WarpedLab

      Well this was 50%/50% Gasolina and diesel. My only guess is that maybe I have to change some settings for the Fuel curve.

      @@WarpedLab I think "jet a" is 20% gasoline, it's used in cold weather on 747. Jet b is like strait kerosene.
      Looks like it runs hot tho. How does that turbine handle the excessive turbine Temps? The Garrett one I built will melt if I mess up the starting sequence, bit runs perfectly once it's going.

      @@WarpedLab Apologies, my bad there! That sure ought to work.
      It does look like you are experiencing continuous compressor stalls, but it's difficult to hear if that's the case, as it's a tiny engine.
      I believe it's easy to remedy. Usually this kind of stalling is due to advancing the throttle with too much enthusiasm. Try retarding the throttle all the way back to idle. Then you start advancing again, but very slowly and carefully. Just advance a tiny notch, and let the turbine temperature stabilize for a while. Then Advance a tiny notch again, and let it stabilize, and so forth, until you reach 100% thrust. That ought to do the trick.
      Good luck !

    Unthinkable please consider DME (dimethyl ether) as a fuel. It has the same mixing and storage conditions as propane, but the speed of combustion is MUCH faster.

    That would be cool to use on Sunday mornings in my hood. Lol.
    Also the octane and flash point isn't as hot as jet fuel so it may be looking for a certain temp for a period of time. As a safety it shuts down.

    Jet engines love gasoline, as long as you have a fuel system tuned for it. The specific gravity doesn't match that of jet-a, so it runs poorly

    i figure that it makes sense though. it’s trying to use compression to ignite a fuel that is specifically formulated to not ignite under those conditions.

    • @Jack-hg1hq
      @Jack-hg1hq 3 роки тому +5

      No its not, the ignition comes from an ignitor and then sustained by the continuous flame

    • @thefreedomguyuk
      @thefreedomguyuk 3 роки тому +1

      Eeerm, no....
      The problem is the gasoline is burning way too fast in the superheated combustion chamber. Basically, as soon as the aerosol is hitting the flame holder, it's literally gone again.

    • @Franco_FC
      @Franco_FC 3 роки тому +3

      @@thefreedomguyuk oh, so that's why it produces such long flames? it is not possible to mix well with the air and it produces a less efficient combustion?

    • @thefreedomguyuk
      @thefreedomguyuk 3 роки тому +4

      @@Franco_FC I was slightly off the point, as I didn't catch the crucial point that it's running 50/50 gas diesel. But to keep things simple, then yes, the flame is unburnt fuel which runs straight through and ignite in the exhaust.

      @@THatChevyguy91 not a silly question at all dude. I wouldn't do it as 2 stroke oils burn at pretty low temperatures. A turbine and its bearings get hell hot. 2 stroke oil would probably cause carbon build up and jam up the bearings. If I was to use something in a hurry it would be fully synth oils with as high possible temperature resistance >=200°c
