- Hey guys! So I usually make how to fix and check this out mod videos for Sambar's, but I had someone ask to do a super basic video, I think this is what he meant lol. Geared towards new and future owners to help locate the essentials, so check it out! I talk a lot but its usually about something so stick around lol. It's worth it. I was taught 50 years ago that there is no such thing as a stupid question, this is how we learn. I am planning on a Kei Truck or Van when I retire in 3 years, so a video like this is interesting becuase i have no idea where the oil stick is, how coud I ? I have never seen one. SO keep teaching my friend.

Always come to a complete stop when changing 2wd/49wd as well if you are engaging diff locker. Awesome video man!

My very first car was a 1992 Subaru legacy and I absolutely loved that car, everything was logical and easy to service... The fuel filter was right on top on the right side... The AC was a beast and the only reason it stopped working is because my mother was a spoiled woman who would turn it on full blast, then turn the heat on full blast while in bumper to bumper instead of moving the temperature slider which caused my AC clutch to seize, she would also drive it over 100mph when she was late for court, etc... everybody hates the automatic seatbelts, but as a proud uncle I was happy to see that my nephew was looking like a gentleman with his seatbelt on, that car was a blessing from God, after riding the bus to work and back and my mom's ford explorer getting attempted robbed because I caught the guy breaking the window with a crowbar... Obviously we weren't living in the best neighborhood, but back to the car, if you treat her right shell do the same in return
At long last my 1998 Subaru Sambar truck arrives on Tuesday from Japan.
Just got a 96 supercharged AWD kvan and glad there's a community I can learn from! Thanks for your video.
Hint: For the Sambar truck. PUSH IN the engine cover while turning the key in order to open up the engine compartment. If you don't push in, friction will tend to rigidly affix the latching mechanism in place ... it won't turn at all.
A REALLY good video is how to make the changes to the sambar to pass the inspection. Here in BC you nee to have DOT headlights, 3rd break light, DOT tires and flashing turn signals on the side of the truck.
I passed in BC without any of that. I did need dtrl's.

Just an FYI on the battery you can easily replace that with a powersports/lawn and garden battery.
do they have the pencil point terminals?
@@OhKeiGarage No but either JIS battery post adapters (13 and some change ) or change you cable ends to standard ends also cheap.
Ran across your channel from a link in an Ebay message you sent from my purchase of a couple K&N filter stickers. Thanks for sending the stickers, once they arrive I'll send you a picture of one on my truck's air filter housing.
Saw you have several videos on these mini trucks. I don't have one...yet, but really want one. Had a Yamaha Rhino UTV a few years back, and I think a mini truck would be far more useful for my usage. Sub'd your channel. Great content.

Wow, nice sanbars! I live in Seattle, I just bought a 94 sanbar van from TCV. Seems like there is quite a club of sanbars in WA state.
Hopefully it doesnt take too long to get here, I'm sure ill have to work on it. It's not supercharged, but is 4WD.

Removed! I honestly don’t like it. Truck looks cleaner without it. I have it sitting in my shed tho in case I need it. Doesn’t go with the lowered clean look I was going for

@@OhKeiGarage I have a 1997 Sambar heading my way, it is supercharged and the pictures I received show two ports on the valve cover. Do they make a Red Top cover with two ports? Mahalo!

Oh also wondering if you could do a video on checking the idle rpm and how to adjust? I think mine is too low and engine stalls at lights occasionally.

Just got my supercharged Sambar van (1996). Super clean. Don't want to mess anything up. Very basic question...Gas! Dealer said regular is fine. Another friend with a 'classic' using Non Ethanol. Others say Hi octane is best. What is the consensus? Thanks.

if you're green, get the subaru green coolant, can't go wrong with oe fluids. pick up a gallon on amazon or ebay, but make sure it's green, not blue.
What is the fan behind/ under the passenger seat? Should it be constantly running?
Thats the rear heater, and no it shouldn't be on all the time. should be a switch on the center console behind the e brake
Thanks for the video. I am living in California and I always wanted a kei van. But I heard it's very difficult to get it registered in CA as they have their own rules. I heard some people would register it in other states then driving it in CA, do you think this is a good way for long term? Cause the difficulty to register is stopping me from buying one for long, thanks.
Oh man, that's a tough one. I just moved out of cali like 9 months ago to Washington for a lot of reasons and this was definitely one of them... you may be able to register it as an off road vehicle or like a UTV or golf cart since it may be older than the smog laws in cali. PRE OBD. i would try and register it to a friend or family out of state and just have them forward mail to you. plates, registration, BUT if you get some cop who spots you in an out of state vehicle everyday, they will write a fix it ticket since you can only have an out of state vehicle for a certain period of time. so that would only work so long till the state caught on. i would definitely start with seeing what the rules are on registering it for off road use or like a golf cart. i wouldn't be driving it on the freeways in cali anyways. too many idiots and they'd be trying to run you off the road since these little trucks aren't designed to drive over 55 mph for long periods of time. good luck!
Was about to start modifying the exhaust on mine and was curious what you did with the pipe that goes from the driver side exhaust up to the, what looks like, a vacuum solenoid or similar?
so different years have the egr valves, mine did not, but i believe you could just plug the vacuum line running to the diaphragm, ive seen it before, then just remove it all. i think its just an emissions thing. not performance

I just bought a 1998 sambar automatic van and want to know if there are any mods to make it a little faster or reliable.
its a kv4 and supercharged but I hear that they are the worst for being automatic instead of a manual so I was hoping if anyone knows a website where to look for transmissions for em.
It being supercharged you’re already 10 steps ahead of us in power but as far as the trans go, you may want to just get yourself a powder clutch before it goes out. You could do a manual swap but you will need a lot of parts. Basically a donor vehicle. I think Yokohama motors has some stuff for the autos
hey I was reading the comments and bit and wanted some idea of where to start. There’s a local supercharged sambear near me it has a idling issue and spark plugs get fouled any idea what it is?
could have a leak somewhere on the hoses causing some issues but hard to say!

being from cali, i would say absolutely lol. honestly i dont know for sure. there might be some smog requirements that could be an issue. i hear people register them out of state and take them into cali. you may want to reach out to a dealer in cali who sells kei cars and see what they say!

I need your help please help me if possible. subaru kv4 1998. hard to find obd location to check obd on my car. Is this vehicle class not obd2? In our country, these vehicles are less in number.
these are pre OBD, you won't find one lol. they only have connections for when you get a check engine. i believe the 99 and up are OBD.

in the radiator, not the overflow right? you just wanna fill it till full and try to remove all the air.

In your opinion how reliable is the sambar? I've heard mixed reviews.
very reliable. non interference motor, so the timing belt breaks, you're good. the others will require a rebuild if it breaks lol... easy to work on, easy to get parts for. i haven't had issues with them so i can't complain. honestly, i would recommend the Subaru as of now for sure.

@@androdiehl6596 well there’s that. But honestly that can happen to any kei truck. They aren’t really designed for the driving we do in the US. People want to daily them on the freeways with carb’d vehicles, gas gets into the crank case and thins oil out and burns em up. If you daily on the freeway, you just have to bump up the oil change intervals. We think since they’re cars they can handle anything but in reality they can only handle what they were designed for 🤷🏼♂️

Just follow these simple steps 😆 check marketplace on the reg. People who want to sell a sambar, will price it to sell. You can pick a good one up for under 4-5k easy. You just gotta be looking for it. You’ll find one. If you want to import one, I can recommend a company, but it’s a looooooong wait, so it’s usually easier to find one imported already. And when you do, I can help get it fixed 😂🤙🏻
