Went down same road with the fixed blades and ended up with quite a bit of Bowies. I liked the tanto tipped blades too. Lynn Thompson sold Cold Steel awhile ago but I still like their blades, I did buy a Raider from Ontario Knife Co yrs back...good value. I didn't have any large folders but picked up and extra large Cold Steel Voyager folder which led to me purchasing on sale a limited edition Cold Steel Spartan with S35VN serrated blade that's my EDC now. We have a lot of the same interests, your story telling makes anything interesting so I'm in for the long haul...God help us all...LOL. Thanks Z
The bowie styles go all the way back to the viking schramasaxe (hand axe) petty much every style of bowie's minus the very hooked clips are seen in schramasaxe. Find an Ontario frontiersman bowie in spec plus designed by Bill Bagwell and you will love it.
WW2 Fairbairn Sykes Fighting Knives (Commando Dagger) is another subject that can consume you and take you down a deep rabbit hole. I have several issued models that have personal sentimental value to me as a former Royal Marine Commando. 🗡
Oh yeah, I'm obviously aware of them, however, being thrifty them things are far beyond my budget, which I'm thankful for :D - I keep hoping to stumble upon one on the cheap one day, that and a genuine 1918 brass knuckle trench knife
Hello Mike Just Subscribed just wanted to say thanks for sharing your personal collection of bowie knives. Just listen to your video feel like I know you for years brother how you mention your dad, brother and grandfather really make audience connection effortlessly. Been a knife enthusiast my whole life this video / conversation about knives is one of the best I ever encountered feel like I could just have a beer and get lost in the great conversation about knives in general good job man good vibes from San Francisco California 🤙🔪🗡
Thanks, this is an informative video. I have an upcoming project, a Hunter II Bowie from Brazil. It's a fabulous knife! Surely a budget option back in the day, the fittings and fitment is all so-so, but the blade! This video is a motivation and an inspiration to get onto it. There's a short video on my channel titled "Happy Shouting Outing..." that showcases the knife in its current condition. I will likely make another video once I have completed the blade restoration and rehandling.
I didn't get a great deal out of this but it was fun to watch. I didn't realize that Bowies shaped like that were issued in WW2. So, that was new. Thanks.
I new one I just picked up is a hmong bowie, its the traditional knife of the hmong people of southest Asia and its been fun to play with kind of a cross between a viking sax and a western bowie
I would keep that Ontario Marine raider bowie Ontario is going out of business and they're becoming more sought after and going up in price and definitely will be highly collectable pretty soon
Army 71-74, "liberated" a tropical aviators survival kit. Had the Woodsman Pal blade made by Frank & Warren. Have used it a bit but it is a fine blade. Really good steel. Gave most of the kit to my bros when I got out. No clue when it was made
I dont have any bowies yet, kailash blades makes one i really like ill order when i can afford it. I really want some, I also really like the arkansas toothpick style of large bush knives/combat knives.
I have an Ontario SP-10, I love it and my Cold Steel 12" LTC Kuhkri . I have a Cold Steel Drop Forged Survivalist on the way, it is just a less expensive version of the Recon Scout.
I don't blame you for wanting to hold on to those historical blades I've always liked the Randall knives from the Vietnam era. One of my favorite's Bowie's is the hell's belle bowie by Bill Bagwell. Forged blade with distel tapper in both the blade and tang custom made to fit you, sharpened clip, U shaped guard, with Spanish notch. Not to be mistaken with the cheeper production run sold by Ontario knife company years back. Kick myself for not getting one made before unfortunately Bill passed away.
Edwin Forest "bowie" made by Bark River is a fairly accurate reproduction of the knife you are referring to, a "breaking knife" used to break down (butcher) a carcass.
I like the Bowie styles. If you haven't checked Entrek knives, you might like some of those designs. My favorite is the Silhouette. Unfortunately, they stopped making that design a few years ago, and so far, I haven't found another one on the used market. It's a sub hilt design that does have drawbacks in some situations but, still, a bad ass blade.
@@AstroVanTribe My fixed blade knives include mostly ESEE, Schrade USA, Benchmade, and I think one Buck Vanguard in D2. I'll have to try and find that one.
Man, I don't know.... I'm not that kind of knife fan, I end up hunting a particular style, usually used, so I'm not up on manufacturers product lines at all
Still have my first Bowie, a Sabre. Perfect for a 12 year old. My second was a Case XX, with the brass on the spine, that was bought at the PX in Norfolk in the 70s. I've a few others of various makes, the most atrocious is called a rifleman's Bowie. It looks like someone cut down a WW1 bayonet to make a knife.
@@AstroVanTribe nope, Pakistan.I do have a few bayonets, one Polish WW2 and a Lee-Enfield. Also a pair of socket bayonets, though I suspect they were meant for cadets as the socket is a bit small for most muskets. I've also got a yataghan style French bayonet. Unfortunately someone cut the muzzle ring off that.
Marine Raiders - They were also in the air plane survival kits - You can read up on them, anyone going to the Pacific could be issued one towards the wars end
Im upset to see such poor quality steel and very high prices on bowies .... supossed premium companies using 440 stainless charging 500 dollars its rediculous
I'm a huge fan and collector of Bowie knives as well. I just love them.
*_Very Cool Video!_*
_Bowie knives, and all of the history surrounding the original is very near and dear to my heart! Thank you for this one!_
👍As a knife guy myself very good video on the evolution of the Bowie and it variants.

I carried one of those in iraq that I got from my dad

Really enjoyed this love the bowie and thank you for your service.
Good collection and video 👍
Yes, a nice review of your examples and the history and concept and variations, particularly the western/raider type
Interesting insight about the tapered tang
Mike, You don't have one of my custom FMB Bowie's! You have nothing until you have one of mine! Frank B.
Nice man I appreciate you Bowie knife take hard to many Americans if you’re a knife person you gotta love’em
Cool gear as usual ✊🏼

Cool knives man!
You need a cold steel 1917 frontier Bowie in your collection.
They're neat.... Maybe a bit too fantasy for me but I admire them
The Case 1836 Bowie Davie Crockett models-70s-80s?- also have the unique Bakelite aroma to the handle.
Só coisas top 👍 🇧🇷

Your Woodsmans pal Bowie was being promoted in fighting knives USA magazine in 1988 for $69
Wow, I'd like to see that...

Have you looked at a Buck 120? They are also big like a Bowie, just doesn't have the sharp angular spine and belly.
I respect Buck knives but never owned a fixed blade Buck
@@AstroVanTribe My fixed blade knives include mostly ESEE, Schrade USA, Benchmade, and I think one Buck Vanguard in D2. I'll have to try and find that one.
Is something up with Ontario, they don't seem to offer as much now? Don't see the SP series line offered anymore.

I have heard that Ontario knife company filed for bankruptcy a few months back if that helps you out
@@Metalholic7of8 that sucks
@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill they got bought out and American factory shut down
I'm partial to double-bladed ones but single Cuts work too😆
Nice
I use to hate the Bowie with the big brass hand guard and now I can get enough of them.

If that last one was actually made from a WWI Bayonet it's a really neat thing...!

i love the stinky one from WW2
From my Grandfather I have the Collins Legitimus bowie.
So cool....
I just found your channel👍Subscribing.
I.m going to order my first Kukri🗡💀
Who was issued a Bowie?
Marine Raiders - They were also in the air plane survival kits - You can read up on them, anyone going to the Pacific could be issued one towards the wars end
Hi mate what is your hat? Gday mate 🇦🇺
WWII Reproduction Army HBT cap
You wouldn't be interested in selling one of those Case Bowie's would you ?
I only have the one Case XX - Not selling that
Love the pencil holder and hat, can i get a name link for that?
It's a WWII Army cap, repop - I just cut the slot in the headband for the pencil
@@AstroVanTribe ah. Well maybe u should patent it, lol
TOPS PRATHER WAR BOWIE=best modern 21st century BOWIE imo.
Just looked that up, it's wild because it looks a LOT like the blade I forged with a knife maker in Tennessee back in 2018
Im upset to see such poor quality steel and very high prices on bowies .... supossed premium companies using 440 stainless charging 500 dollars its rediculous
I have a cheap Pakistan Bowie knife- it does the job and it's cheap ..
Such a smart, no notbin' know it all ...
That's the one! That hurt his feelings for sure!
I am FIRST!
Tops prather war bowie is a bad mamma jamma but sheath is junk 😢
Foolish design w that undertaker hilt. Shape is insufficient and w all the pins it is it not a very good candidate for a re-handle
Check out the Svord Von Tempsky, absolute beast of a knife!
