What is a multiband compressor? How do you use one? Why, in fact, would you use one? Multiband compressors are a beautiful 2 for 1 in the audio processing tool world. They combine the dynamic range decreasing power of a compressor, and combine that with the sound shaping world of the Equalizer. The way they accomplish this is by using 3 or 4 individual compressors on different frequency bands across the whole EQ spectrum. This is powerful because you can compress different frequencies at different amounts, shaping the tone while compressing the amplitude.
Question of the week: Where do you live? How long have you been doing video? (amateur or profesh)
Oliver J Hughes Upstate New York! Just doing voiceover stuff at work for now but want to get into more music mixing at home in the future. Again with the clutch video!
I’m from Southern CA I was an audio professional working in live sound then moved to IT. I have a degree in audio engineering but my skills are super rusty. I know you are the real deal which is why I appreciate your channel and Twitter info so much.
I'm from Australia and I've been at this video stuff for a few months now. Well, I made a few videos that I uploaded on here last year, but I had only just started making videos and I didn't really know what I was doing and kinda got a little self-conscious that my videos weren't as good as people's.
So, since then I've spent the time watching tutorials - like yours and Peter McKinnon's, a whole lot of people - and getting some knowledge. I've now started putting it into practice over the last few months and I've uploaded a few more videos. They're a but primitive, but I'm currently working on planning them a more, make them feel a little less thrown together. I'll get there.
I'm going to push myself to make this a profession (along with acting, my first love and photography).
Keep up the awesome work, man, you've got me hooked!
Keep going Rhys! I believe in you.
Awesome to hear you’re an audio person! Live sound is a completely different beast so I respect you for that! Thanks again, Sara!
Hi Oliver, my name is Elizabeth. I live in California. I starting using Audition CC last summer to help my husband produce his audio-drama podcast. We plan to launch the show this fall and thanks to you my knowledge of mixing and mastering has expanded exponentially! The show is sounding so professional! We can’t wait to launch it! Definitely appreciating your audio gospel!
I just randomly ran into this video, I love both of those mics. Great Channel, good subjects, would be nice to see you go more into detail about what each individual setting does on the MBC for those who are not familiar. keep up the good work!
Great call. Will definitley do a video like that in the future!
hey , im from brasil, and i have a bad client that is exploring me, so i have to learn how to clean audio by my self, im really glad about this series of videos, it make very clear how those features work , thhhaaank you !!!!
great to stumble on your channel, awesome tip
Hi Oliver! I'm Lucas, live in Boston and I make programming tutorials since August of 2018. I picked up the SM7B recently and am so excited playing around with the MultiBand compressor- it blows away my previous recordings! Thanks for the video!
Thanks from Germany, doing a lot of video work (fulltime) for companies as well as filming weddings 🙂
I feel like audio editing is the craft where I have the least knowledge of my filmmaking skills so I am happy that I did found your channel because of Matt Johnson 👌🏼
Patrick Niedermayer 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
A little fast for me, but this is my first project in Audition, PPro. HUGE learning curve, but I like how you explain things, very logical
Trying to understand the multiband compressor. Your video was very helpful. I'd love to understand compression a lot more....
Hello, i,m from ROMANIA. YOU do a great job
Found the channel recently and have been making my way through your older videos. Some fantastic info, great tutorials and well delivered. Enjoying your work here in Ireland
Thanks man, glad to meet you!
Hi! I'm from Chile! Trying to learn and improve my audio post prossesing skills and use it in my work. I don't record the dialogue, but doing my best to make it beautiful on TV hahahahah.
Thank you!
Hey Oliver, I just stumbled upon your videos. Well done. I've been an editor for 25 yrs in LA and I find your videos invaluable. You have a knack for describing what can be a rather complex subject so that anyone can grasp it. Keep em coming!
Wow that's high praise coming from you! I so appreciate it!!
keep killing it brother
Thanks man
SF Bay Area, 15 years doing video, good channel/videos, keep up the good work!

You're a time traveler, braah!
Three years, you talking to me!
Lmao! Love it!
I'm Skro. I write books that focus on the mystery of conscious evolution, and fun stuff you can do, for real, when you live in the mystery.
From Atlantic City, NJ. I'm 32. Dropped out of college, and found a mystery school that focuses on telling real stories from other realities... one that finds you when you don't fall for Full Sail's "We're the cool kids" trick. (no offense to anyone who went, almost did myself)
Since the topics that get me going aren't on the pre-approved, publishers' PC lists, I said, "Screw it. I'll birth my babies myself."
First learned how to do all the paperback formatting--all that fun stuff--graphic design along with it. (Illustrator) That she-et turned out to be hella fun!
Then my friends told me I need to translate my stuff into audiobooks. That I'm an idiot for not already. (I don't disagree) But once I get going, I need to master whatever I'm doing. Spent most of this year getting frisky with audition, and it's just now really starting to click. And the spectral frequency display blows my frikkin mind! It's alive!
Anyways, I'm all-in on audition. It's funny, I guess you're legit one of my teachers--HAAH! Dope. Thanks, Teach!
This is way more fulfilling of a life path than whatever type of insurance or accountant barrrrf I slept walked into right after high school.
Cheers, brother, and cheers to everyone else who stays loyal to the creative vision. 🤘😝👻
LOVE IT. I'm pumped about your book man. I'd be fascinated to read it
So I learnt about the multiband compressor last year, but was suggested to use the following settings: Lows - 10:1 with no gain, low-mid - 4:1 with 3dB gain, high-mid - 2:1 with 3dB gain, highs - 8:1 with no gain. Are you able to explain why you use the settings you do?
Greetings. OK So I just discovered you and liked you enough to subscribe. I'm editing my first 3 short docs I filmed in India. I've never done audio or editing before. Audio seems to be my weakest link! So I've just been playing around with this multiband compressor and it's definitely improved my audio. I've used the broadcast preset and tinkered slightly. However it also seems to be adding, I would say, some clicks and pops. And also slightly increasing the background sound, which I've already previously worked hard to remove. Should I now add like a declicker or something? Any advise most welcome. Cheers fella!
Thank you, beard guy. Helped me a lot.
At your service
hej. thanks again. I have lost you chanel for a little time. happy to be back!
hi there! finally I found this great channel
Awesome!
Yo!! Glad to meet ya.
Mexico, currently based in Poland. Been into audiovisuals for around 7 years with different phases of comitment
Hey Oliver, I’m from CT. Just discovered your Chanel. Trying to lean more about audio for video and love the material here. Been doing sound / video as film maker hobbiest. Really like this video as I have been using the multiband compressor tool in premier but not always with good results. This was helpful. Love to hear what you have to say about noise reduction tips with adobe audition. Have never really been able to get the results I’m looking for with that. Thanks!
Here's my Noise reduction video from last summer - I'm planning an update soon as well! Thanks for saying hey! ua-cam.com/video/54VsPQBlOpY/v-deo.html
amateurs. To be honest, audio was the last thing that I considered when getting started with video production. I was no exception. *sigh*
A guy can screw up A-roll footage, and easily hide it with B-Roll footage...works like a charm. But, if the audio gets jacked up, there is no hiding it. And there are so many ways for the audio to get messed up; environmental (echo, refrigerator, HVAC, ambient noise, wind, etc), clipping (metering too hot, plosives from poor mic placement, etc), scratchy noises (lav mic, and or cable rubbing on clothing as talent moves)........the list goes on and on for mistakes than can be made during production and post-production.
I've heard someone say that "the audio is half of the viewing experience." Big believer in that statement.
Oliver, thank you for sharing your love of audio. You are appreciated, man.
YOU are appreciated! And this is all so true.
Hey Oliver, just outside Atlanta, GA here. Nice to meet you. Glad I found this channel. Been doing audio/video for a while both as a hobby and at work. I'll just say that Audition was still "Cool Edit Pro" back when I got into it, lol. My personal channel doesn't have much in the way of the polished work I've done. Most of this stuff here is me screwing around and being silly or experimental. Looking forward to improving my skills even more. I consider myself ever the learner.
Cool Edit Pro!! What a throwback! Hey I’m learning right with you
Greetings from Chile! Trying to improve my mic audio lol thanks for the videos
hey oliver,
I had a question regarding this,
would multiband compressor be also used with 'Dynamics' and 'Parametric EQ'?
or is it best to just use it by itself
Thanks man
Tim
Absolutely it could! Since it bridges that gap between the two, it is great alone, but ALWAY better as a small piece in a bigger puzzle!
Hi Oliver, where can we find the precursor video to this one? Cheers!

Hey Man. I'm from Cincinnati, Oh. Been doing video production since about the year 2000
Great video. Glad I found your channel. Subbed and belled! Keep up the awesome work! (Pennsylvania, 5 years, semi-profesh)
Thank you! Glad to meet you.
The other side of the "save time, 2-in-1 compressor/EQ" is that people EQ then they use a MB compressor (or visa versa). They don't realize, that unless they compress evenly, they screw up the EQ they just tuned.
I find MB compressors to be a redundant tool created for the sake of making a new tool. I think it has far more use in music than in VO or video audio, but I can appreciate your case that it saves time by combining two tasks. I suppose it's the first intelligent argument in favor of a MB compressor I've heard. This is why I subscribe!
I think you're spot on. I never use the multiband compressor in my dialogue signal chain - just, like you've picked up, wanted to give it as an option for the newer audio-interested person! (Honestly just like the shampoo analogy cause I would never use a 2 in 1 for that either LOL!)
Joel from Colorado. Doing video and audio for about 10 Years. I’ve had the sm7b for about a year and love it. Do you ever connect your mics directly into your Apollo interface or do you prefer a separate pre amp?
J S Colorado is where my soul lives! I do connect mics direct sometimes, but it has to be a condenser mic with enough gain. 9/10 times I go into my pre-73 mk ii preamp before the Apollo.
That's awesome bro. Thanks for the feedback. You seriously have one of the best channels on UA-cam. I have been writing music with my best friend and we have our own little recording setup. I have noticed that I generally need to crank the Apollo gain up really high to get a decent level. Do you like your mk ii for vocals? I'm thinking of pop/R&B style tracks. Thanks
J S Thanks man!! Yes I love it for vocals - I’m new in the preamp world but this one has been fantastic. I’ve been using it with my SM7B and loving the sound-super clean and quiet
Morgantown, WV. Been shooting since 2014ish.
Where can I find the course you are talking about?
I mentioned the Audio Tools Course here: ua-cam.com/play/PLo_79bnVnMQlSK3LFxRVhVUdJpVZK6l4n.html
Found it!
Hey man, Whats up! Love your channel. Dope and very helpful content. I am from the great state of Texas down in San Antonio. I'm from France and I don't really know when I actually started video production. I started editing stuff in 2012/2013 and it became "serious" years later, I'd say 2016.

You’re doing the Lord’s work
Im doing videos for two years now and im from germany frankfurt
I'm from Russia. Making montage for the last three mounth.
Oliver, I like this vid, but it could easily be 1 minute long.
You’re probably right!
Im Mehmood Azeem from Pakistan. I have made a UA-cam Channel and I am simply just trying to learn that how can i increase the volume of my videos so the my viewers on UA-cam can hear me properly from their mobile phones.
There is no music or any other sound in my videos other than my own voice..
Sure thing! First of all, what editing software are you using? All software will have gain controls for the whole mix. In premiere pro, you'll find it in the track mixer - and you can simply slide the fader up on the master channel until you get the desired loudness. Let me know if this helps!
@@OliverJHughes Hi, I'm using Adobe Auditions 2020
Are you mixing in the multitrack project? Or do you simply use the single, waveform editor? Either way you can simply place a plugin in the Effects Rack (Hard Limiter, found under 'Amplitude and Compression') and simply increase the 'Input Boost' fader to help bring up your signal.
