"War is a racket... It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives."
~Smedley Butler
Best book ever,
The "racket", Butler clarified, "is conducted for the benefit of the very few at the expense of the very many". How little things have changed since then.
Butler at best was a stooge doing the Soviets bidding. He absolutely was working with spies. It’s just not known if he knew it. The congressman from New York was a Soviet spy. He was the one holding the meeting
That's not just called war, specifically it's capitalist imperialism
You left out a prominent coup plotter: Prescott Bush. I wonder how you missed that detail...

I thought he was busy at that time financing the rise of Nazi Germany

"Now - you Mothers, particularly! The only way you can resist all this war hysteria and beating of tom-toms is by asserting the love you bear your boys. When you listen to some well worded, some well-delivered war speech, just remember it's nothing but sound. No amount of sound can make up to you for the loss of your boy. After you've heard one of those speeches and your blood's all hot and you want to bite somebody like Hitler--go upstairs to where your boy's asleep. Look at him."

Man I bet they were pissed when they discovered that Buttler was exactly the type of person he appeared to be. A decent, honest and patriotic American with real morals and a conscience. I'm sure that they had thought it all an act, for the sake of his image and that he was actually as dodgy and easily bought as the rest of them. Then when they suggested their plans and dropped in the fact that there was plenty of money available to fund it all, wink, wink the first time but were turned down they probably believed he was just being greedy and couldn't accept he'd turned them down because he wanted more money which is ehy they kept trying, unable to believe that a really decent person existed.
If they had gone to the just as popular, but still in service MacArthur he would have jumped at the chance!
I expect nothing less from any Marine past, present, or future. While the Corps is not without its villains in uniform, the vast majority of Marines serve in humble silence driven by a deep and true meaning of honor; duty; courage; discipline. In short, Semper Fidelis. Always. Not a little nor in abundance. Simply Semper Fidelis. Oh yeah, the DIs at Parris Island taught us raw recruits God created the Corps on the 8th day and saw that it was so good He decided 7 days were enough for everyone else😎
Really rich business men always think everyone is for sale. The German Oligarchs at the time thought they could control Hitler also.
@Andrew Schembri He wasn’t popular with the troops after he drove out the Bonus Army, including killing women and children who were there.
The people or things on W. D. C. are not human !!!!!!
Yes, let's get a vocal critic of corporations and their control over the government to lead our corporate plot to take over the government.
I feel like there was a loyalist in the business plot who suggested Smedley Butler because he knew he was loyal too. What a movie that would be
They chose him because he was popular with the troops and the general public for his support of the bonus army.
It’s why they chose Smedley Butler over MacArthur.
Even monkeys fall from trees. Even smart people make stupid mistakes.
I honestly wish they succeeded just because FDRs changes permanently fucked up America.
@@robertsmalls2293
America was already fked up before FDR took charge. Robber Baron era had turned America into oligarchic society where a few men controlled so much money they can buy out the country, kept sucking off the working class. Progressive era of Teddy Roosevelt & early 1900s put some leash on that, then conservatives swooped in 1920s & handed the power back to Oligarchs, removed all regulations off bankerd & wall street again, all the way to Great Depression.
When FDR came to power, the country was already in free fall, over millions of families were about to go homeless & end up in street, tens of millions of American were starving, were unemployed. People had lost trust off financial, public institutions & in capitalism itself, ground was ripe for extreme ideology like fascism & communism, anarchism to take over. Before FDR took over Conservative govt of Hoover have already refused to help suffering Americans. That is where FDR came in. Because of him those millions of families kept roof above their head, able to feed their families instead of dying in the street. We transformed from an oligarchic society to a progressive society with a strong middle class. Well regulated banking & wall Street, financial sector. FDR was by no means perfect, but with base he provided & policies he enacted, America experienced the Prosperity of 40s, 50s, 60s which is often called the "Golden age of capitalism".
FDR's changes saved Capitalism itself & America along with it.
You want know someone who's changes permanently fked up America?
Ronald Reagan as president.
I wish more people talked about this.
help make you believe the Bush family is evil
I think the reason it's sorta obscure is threefold. On one side, William Randolph Hearst was allegedly one of the conspirators, in which case most newspapers would have a vested interest in burying this story at the time. On the other... we were in the middle of a depression and the country was shaky as is. If word got out that there was very nearly a coup that could have succeeded, that could have caused a TON of trouble for everyone involved. And finally, while Butler remained a popular figure, his socialist and anti-imperial stances would become a hard sell as time went on and the american political ecosystem no longer made room for folks like him.
So the press largely had a reason to dismiss it, the state largely considered it too risky to openly prosecute lest it inspire someone else to attempt a coup, and Butler would go on to become at most a footnote in the typical narrative of American history because of his inconvenient political and ideological positions.
Its happening now in the United States and nobody gonna stop it
It’s not spoken about because it involved Skull and Bones member and Nazi sympathizer Prescott Bush being exposed.
The capitalist media and education apparatus wouldn't have much interest in people knowing this.
Powerful people conspiring against the well being of the many to protect their power. Really shows that people dont change..just the technology
Well being of the many? You think social security is for the well being of the many? You are lost.
You can have a philosophical debate on the intent or whatever but it's an undeniable fact that it pulled millions of seniors out of poverty...millions is many and poverty is the opposite of well being so yes
What the GOP is doing now is nothing new for them. They're the ones who tried to enlist the Third Reich in this plot.
The poor do the same thing.
In the end, it's not as simple as an issue of superior morals.
@@sirdeadlock you're right, it's about doing what's best for everyone in the country, and therefore the country itself. Butler was a patriot. they were out of their minds if they thought he wanted to be some fascist, pro rich ruler.
If I remember correctly Prescott Bush was involved in this plot.
Yes
Indeed, the man was also a fan of hitler, so no surprise there
He was to be the go-between for the new fascist US government and Nazi Germany
His steel is the train tracks leading into Auswitz ... and a few panzer parts snd stuff .
Also Chase bank was the bank used for some of the lines of credit that were drawn out for the people that would need money for staging the coup d'état, the person running chase bank at the time was the brother-in-law to JD Rockefeller. Robert S. Clark (a wall street banker that inherited great wealth from the singer manufacturing company) (who also happened to serve under Butler in the marine corp), also planned to contribute half of his 30 million dollar fortune to the effort and I believe set up the initial funds to pay for the overthrow. The reason they approached Butler is because he had expressed anti-communist views and he had support of the disenfranchised poor military members that as you said were protesting for their bonuses of WW1. The youtube channel Carnage on Ice did an amazing look at this in really great detail, video is over 3 hours long but well worth it. I had to break up the watching over a few days but great information overall.
I got my BA in PoliSci. I'm passionate about politics, government and history. I've read countless books and research papers related to politics, international affairs, history, etc. I've studied the things that Butler talks about in his book (the bonus army, using our military to spread business interests and set up "banana republics," the influence of bankers and industrialists on domestic and foreign policies, the fights between industry and unions/workers, colonialism, socialist movements of the late 19th and early 20th, the love affair between big business and fascism, and so on). However, I'm amazed how Butler has evaded my radar after all these years!!
I do love it when I find another piece of the puzzle of history that I can tie into everything else I've learned. So, I look forward to reading more than just the summary of Butler's book!

I've always been fascinated by this event in history. I think I first heard about it in a History Channel documtary when I was a kid. It was the first time I ever conceived that the government wasn't untouchable.

I'd suggest also studying European history; quite a few revolutions there.
"Treason never prospers; for if it prospers, none dare call it treason."

@Hull Brady Because people are stupid. Prescott Bush is the Father of George Bush and the Grandfather of George W, both former POTUS. I bring this all of the time on social media and they think it's fake, even though there's been books written about Prescott's involvement. You can't fix stupid.
war is a racket...maj. gen smedley butler.
This is far more important (and ethical) to broadcast in schools than the pledge of allegiance
Raspica Blue I agree and it is a shame that more people don't know the name Smedley Butler.
You'll notice that Butler didn't go along with the plot. War isn't the racket -- it's the men (and women) who think they can make money from war and Congress happily goes along.
MJ Cross that is the racket. It isn't the men and women on the battlefield that get rich from the war. It's the men in the banks and wall street that invested in whatever national resources we are after in that war. Whether that resource it the weather to grow crops as in the banana republics or it is oil in the Middle East or if it is rare earth elements (which is next up to help produce the batteries for electric vehicles). We send in the military to help secure these places so capitalism can prosper.
war is a racket is the title of a speech and book by maj gen smedley butler.

Proof positive that this country has been at each other's throats and hyperbolic forever, not just in recent times of social media.
Cotton Mather, the famed Puritan theologian, advocated for an early form of immunization against Smallpox called variolization. Somebody took offense against this, and firebombed his house with an oil lantern. So yeah, culture wars are older than the Republic.

Why is the upper part of a statue or other things called a bust?
Probably because that's what a woman's chest is called.
@@honey_bee65 what about if you break (bust) something...or your business goes broke (bust)?
It's called a bust because, anatomically, that's what that region of the body is called, basically everything above the armpits including the shoulders, but not including the arms. It does not include the tits, which on a human are part of the breast along with the underlying pectoralis muscles. You can also have a bust of an animal, which is sometimes displayed on mounted deer trophies, showing everything forward of their armpits including the neck, head, and horns, but not the forelegs.
In skeletal terms, what makes a bust is including the clavicle and scapula regions (the upper skeletal girdle) but not the ribs.
"Bust" as a euphemism for a woman's tits just happened because people "in polite public society" were too sexually repressed to say "tits." It is an inaccurate slang, because the tits proper are below the actual bust division line.
However, in tailoring, if the top hem of a garment more or less follows the line between the armpits and doesn't cover the tops of the shoulders, it may be called the bustline, since it is in the right place for the boundary. In other cases, the bustline is considered the widest part of the garment that accommodates room for the tits, for the same original reason of false modesty as above.
In garments with a higher top hem that covers the shoulders, it is more properly called the neckline even if it "plunges" down between the tits in the front, revealing some cleavage. Depending on when and where the discussion is happening, all these terms could get mixed up out of a false sense of propriety, so good luck on fashion terms.
Probably more than you ever wanted to know about it, but there you go.
I think it's a variation on 'breast' or maybe 'Brust' (German) for the upper torso (of men or women).
