My Mate 20 X(non 5G version) has substantially better battery life than my Pixel 3a XL. But they are both battery monsters. Ever since upgrading to EMUI 9.1 about a week ago, I have kept performance mode on the entire time and I'm getting an insane 18 hours of screen on time with my Mate 20 X, and close to 11 hours of SOT with the 3a XL(it probably could be more, but I use hotspot and maps quite a bit) My old Galaxy S9 Plus barely broke 7 hours, and I thought my Xperia XZ1 Compact was great with about 9 to 10 hours of SOT.
I've got the pixel 3a XL and I have never got any where near killing the battery in 1 day it's definitely by far the best battery life I've ever had on a phone
Everyone at my work has an iPhone. And they all desperately plug their phones to charge everyday during the shift. Me, with my Pixel 3a Xl....no worries. Lasts all day, all night.
Before I start watching the video, I'll ask you a question! Why didn't you put your Xperia 1 in economy mode or standard screen mode so that it has equivalent performance and equalled to others?
I thought that the Mate 20X 5G would last the same or less than the P30 pro, due to its huge size but, curiously, it has been the second, after the GPixel. I am impressed, because I was afraid that if I switched from the normal Mate 20X to 5G, I would lose a lot.
Unlike mrwhotheboss that did a battery comparison last year on xz3 against others by purposely turning every phone's screen to the max brightness knowing xz3 have a very high brightness screen. It was intended to make Sony battery lifespan looks very bad
Sony Xperia 1 has a smaller battery almost as big as iPhone XS max but could keep up with those that had 4000 and more. But Pixel 3A is also impressive, but its a midrange though. So could be the reason it has a nice battery.
The sony xperia 1 is really a beast in battery to just imagine it with a 4k screen and resist like this GOD! having a battery of 4000 mah would be the king in cell phones in the world
Can confirm the 3a XL is a battery beast. Previous phones were a S9+, P20 PRO, Mate 20 Pro, Pixel 3 XL, and now the 3a XL. I love the camera too. Can't wait to see how the Pixel 4 XL compares.
No one pointing out the OnePlus' performance, 7h50 on 90Hz is absolutely amazing!! Turn both the refresh rate and the screen resolution to dynamic and it should easily exceed 8 hours...for that price, just mind boggling
The iPhone XS Max is the oldest phone, not sure when it was bought, but 10 months old if bought at launch, so would expect around 10% loss in capacity, possibly more if being used for hardcore tests like this. Also the iPhone was on higher resolution than all the others so that will impact. The rest are new phones apart from the P30P that did not perform to when it was new, so that is also affected by time and usage. My iPhone XS Max was bought on 28th Sept, it still has 100% capacity, and easily get 2 days. Would be nice to see a 10-hour standby test as part of something like this and maybe avoid Antutu tests as no one uses their phones that way and possibly avoid games as many of us don’t care and how well they are optimised per device can skew results. Bearing in mind the Sony had 30% less battery than say the P30p it did very well and for most will easily get through a day. The Pixel 3a XL running a slower chip will clearly have a good battery life as the SOC is not drawing as much power to play games and do Antutu. Without the frame rates on the game it is difficult to know if that battery saving compensates the frame rate loss and skipped frames. Thanks for the hard work.

Sony's first (and the world's first) 4k screen came on the Xperia Z5 Premium. The way they designed it is that it ONLY goes into 4k resolution when playing 4k content. Otherwise the screen operates at a standard full HD to conserve battery life.
@@WarriorAngel001 damn, that is really dissapointing considering all these comments claiming that it is the best optimised, but in reallity it is not lol
If it was poorly optimized, it would be 4k all the time, which would rapidly drain the battery as the screen is the leading drainer of any smartphone's battery. Additionally, something that is only full hd being upscaled to 4k isnt going to make a visual difference. Upscaling everything to 4k is redundant and a waste of processor power and, again, not condusive to battery life. If, for example, I load a picture on google chrome that is a 4k image, the screen will display the image at 4k resolution. It doesnt waste energy rendering HD into 4k when it wont make a difference.
The Pixel 3a xl is just amazing ! It gives The Best camera, The Best Battery Life and The Best overall Experience while at the same time being the cheapest amongst these so called flagships. It's the perfect phone for anybody who wants a phone that Just Works without having to sell a kidney. Deminishing Returns !
Nothing surprising. The pixel 3a has a very cheap and weak processor and has comparatively large battery for its 2017 style notchless thick ugly bezel display.
Is that enough? There's still wireless connection options, then the phone's signal reception, which changes if there's no SIM card inside, then background battery optimization, etc etc. Maybe just a bit less transparent than i would've liked for the pre test setups.
Exactly what I was looking forward to. I'm very interested in how Sony is doing even if their current X1 phone sucks for most people lol. I'll be ready for whoever makes a real Samsung competitor when it arrives.
Really 😂😂 what you said makes no sense. Do some research before you speak. Because for example the Xperia 1 has battery care! (Google IT) Its battery doesn't degrade as quick as others incuding the one found in the iPhone. And the iPhone clearly has at least two full hours less screen on time. There is no way thats better 😅 Have fun walking around with a powerbank
Great review!!! Battery life on my Xperia was good but as you saw overheating issues eventually caused me to sell my X1. It even overheated in 60fps in safe mode. Hearing what you said about Sonys history with their phones and cameras I had little faith in sending it in for repair. My new Note 10+ is fabulous and it shows 21:9 video larger than the Xperia. While the X1 may have been louder it's an acceptable trade off for all the Note has to offer. Being able to switch from wide angle to other views and back again while recording video is icing on the cake. The Note is a real keeper and absolutely no regrets selling the X1.
I really liked Sony but I lost my interest on sony since xperia z lines, those phones heat a lot and sony didn't do anything to fix the issue. Sony is known for abandoning their products, they will neglect it afterwards. Hope Sony changes that...
I think all proper working Xperia's will shut down stuff when overheated. My Z5 does it again after a hard reset, didn't do it before (had viruses). I'm really impressed with Pixel with the third 'smallest' battery. Xperia also did well, I'm not surprised about Apple tho.
Something's wrong here. There's no way the oneplus 7 pro lasts longer than the p30 pro. Even an older one. It not only has a smaller battery, but a higher screen resolution and 90 hz refresh rate. I call BS, but I still think the pixel would have beaten all of these phones.
Amazing how long the Xperia 1 lasts all things considered, 4k screen, much smaller battery than all androids. Sony's optimized really well!

Sony Xperia 1 for me..... Look at that screen pure white no red, blue or yellow tint on it... Love it 😍
Even Sony Xperia XZ Premium Shoots 4K Video More Than One Hour Without Overheating
That's a strange thing... my friend got it and X1 started to pop up notifications about overheating constantly. Then after 2 days of use it suddenly stopped and now is working perfectly fine.
I have a sony xperia xz premium. Thats right. It's really wonderful phone..
@@peterdurum434 Even, One UA-camr, XZ Premium Got

@@sanjeewagunawardena1445 Yeah, XZ Premium Is Beast
So. Truee broo... Love my xz premium
4000mAh would've still been good for the Xperia though
I dont understand this guys conclusion the Xperia 1 has a good battery and good optimisation especially for its size.
Xperia 1 has a 3330 mah battery and gets about 6:25 hours of sot.
Compared to the larger 4200mah battery found in the P30 pro wich had 6:40 of sot.
That's only a difference of 15 minutes compared to the Xperia 1 while its battery is about 21% bigger.
The iPhone while it has almost the same battery size as the Xperia it had two hours less of sot while also having a smaller display....
Id take the Sony any day but they should put in a bigger battery next time!
Written on my Xperia 1!
It couldnt even keep the camera app open. Lol
@@carver9312
I have the phone and i didnt encounter the same problem. And Does IT take away from the videos battery subject about the device? Nope!
Its battery quality is better than others this video clearly portays that!
@@jamayrian ... lol, it was the second phone to die. There's no way I'm defending that. What company puts a 3300 mah battery in their phones in 2019? Do not EVER settle. EVER!!!
@@carver9312
Defending whot its the second phone to die yes but considering their battery sizes IT shows that the Sony while smaller performs better with the little pack IT has.
This is also because of its aspect ratio! A 6.5 inch screen in 21:9 equals to a 5.9 inch 16:9 display
6:25 hrs of screen on time is more then enough to get me through a full Day easily
@@jamayrian ... no matter how you look at this... there is not excuse for them putting that small battery in a phone in 2019. Also, a lot of people is hating this phone. I'm talking about people that own the device.
Xperia without Stamina Mode and still keeping up... RESPECT SONY... thats called innovation ;)
Improvement is what it's called. It's not even a Graphene battery. Samsung will bring innovation with their batteries.
Xperia 1 is definitely NOT innovation.
Galaxy Fold and Mate X/Xs are true innovation.
@@PSYCHOV3N0M 🤣🤣🤣 Samsung has to fix their terrible screens first... While kiddies like to play candy crush saga on them.. Professionals like to use phones with serious screens.
You can justify your purchase in a Samsung fanboy manner as much as you want, but I've had several phones simultaneously... And while Sony has maybe the lowest amount of mah... They definitely Perform better during the day than other flagships with 20% more capacity...
This is called efficiency and engineering... Not Brute force specs who just cost us recourses.
My Mate 20 X(non 5G version) has substantially better battery life than my Pixel 3a XL. But they are both battery monsters.
Ever since upgrading to EMUI 9.1 about a week ago, I have kept performance mode on the entire time and I'm getting an insane 18 hours of screen on time with my Mate 20 X, and close to 11 hours of SOT with the 3a XL(it probably could be more, but I use hotspot and maps quite a bit)
My old Galaxy S9 Plus barely broke 7 hours, and I thought my Xperia XZ1 Compact was great with about 9 to 10 hours of SOT.
Xiaomi Mi 9 does better by far with the 3300 mAh battery but it's only a full HD+ AMOLED. It is 6.4" though. I get 11+ no problem with it.
I've got the pixel 3a XL and I have never got any where near killing the battery in 1 day it's definitely by far the best battery life I've ever had on a phone
Yeah, this channel seems to be dominated by Sony fanatics. Pixel 3A XL has excellent battery life.
Everyone at my work has an iPhone. And they all desperately plug their phones to charge everyday during the shift. Me, with my Pixel 3a Xl....no worries. Lasts all day, all night.
Iphone are absolutely horrible
What's your daily job?
Sony Xperia 1, *3330 mAh...😉👍✌️
Xperia 1 would've been the perfect phone if they threw in at least 4000mah. Matches the 4k resolution.
Before I start watching the video, I'll ask you a question!
Why didn't you put your Xperia 1 in economy mode or standard screen mode so that it has equivalent performance and equalled to others?
The Xperia 1 got a new software update to improve battery performance!! Like so he can see
Value of Money = Sony Xperia
Pround to be a Sony Xperia (XZ) user
Xperia is beast even with small 🔋 battery
That's why number does not matter
I thought that the Mate 20X 5G would last the same or less than the P30 pro, due to its huge size but, curiously, it has been the second, after the GPixel. I am impressed, because I was afraid that if I switched from the normal Mate 20X to 5G, I would lose a lot.
Nice comparison , really good idea to calibrate Display light Level to the Same for a fair comparison
thanks thomas :)
Unlike mrwhotheboss that did a battery comparison last year on xz3 against others by purposely turning every phone's screen to the max brightness knowing xz3 have a very high brightness screen. It was intended to make Sony battery lifespan looks very bad
Xperia truly the king.. I have sony phone since 2003
Sony Xperia 1 has a smaller battery almost as big as iPhone XS max but could keep up with those that had 4000 and more. But Pixel 3A is also impressive, but its a midrange though. So could be the reason it has a nice battery.
Performance is bad... Bad at multitasking
This the best review and test in the field with flagship phones: Xperia 1 is a won so far . The Iphone and the Huawei P30 are the worst of all!
No one pointing out the OnePlus' performance, 7h50 on 90Hz is absolutely amazing!! Turn both the refresh rate and the screen resolution to dynamic and it should easily exceed 8 hours...for that price, just mind boggling
OnePlus is the most impressive result of the test for sure. With that screen compared to the other two that outlasted it, even at FHD+.
Best battery comparison on youtube. btw first !
In this comment box everyone talking about Xperia...why is it. ?
Huawei's 3 model (biggest)
On plus (ohhhhh. what a wonderful phones , only for Chinese people)
Apple (great great great)

These phones have the massive battery capacity but where is their battery performance
But Sony Xperia 1 has only 3300 AM battery
But it shows good battery performance
OK thanks Sony
Still I am using Xperia xzs it has 2900 AM battery but which gives good battery performance.

What is IPhone actually doing here?
Sony's first (and the world's first) 4k screen came on the Xperia Z5 Premium. The way they designed it is that it ONLY goes into 4k resolution when playing 4k content. Otherwise the screen operates at a standard full HD to conserve battery life.
But does it show normal apps like Instagram and Chrome in 1080p too? Or does it render their interface in 4k?
Basically it only goes 4k when the content being displayed is 4k, so if whatever is being displayed, including apps, is not 4k it will render in 1080.
Sony is Sony. No chance to beat them.
It doesn't have the best camera and best battery life.
This is most hard to believe battery drain test I've seen in a while. Pixel 3 a winner? I saw it dying soon a lot of times in many channels.
Nothing surprising. The pixel 3a has a very cheap and weak processor and has comparatively large battery for its 2017 style notchless thick ugly bezel display.
Xperia 1 ftw
Xperia 4K hdr diplay it’s very good performance!!!!!!!!!
Except it runs in 1080p when not watching video on UA-cam
@@pb602 no it doesn't, it runs in 1080p where 4k isn't supported
Why did you chose full HD + on OnePlus 7 pro, people buy it to use 90 hz qhd resolution, so your test is not accurate for oneplus.

"sucks for most people"
It has very good user reviews and it sold out in Europe for a reason.
How do u get p30 pro icons on mate 20X,? I updated it to emui 9.1 but still with old icons, i want the new one looks nicer
Lots of work on your part. Very objective. Much appreciated.
Ilove sony,, superb
iPhone battery 🔋 drops quickly but holds its value....unlike android phones value drops quickly and holds its battery 🔋 🤣🤣🤣
There is no way thats better 😅
Have fun walking around with a powerbank

Imagine a Sony with 4500mah 💀💀💀
I really liked Sony but I lost my interest on sony since xperia z lines, those phones heat a lot and sony didn't do anything to fix the issue. Sony is known for abandoning their products, they will neglect it afterwards. Hope Sony changes that...
they changed it now you will not find any sony device with heating issue only z series had heating issue

I see. Thanks for the info.
Sony 💓💓💓💓💓💓
I think all proper working Xperia's will shut down stuff when overheated. My Z5 does it again after a hard reset, didn't do it before (had viruses).
I'm really impressed with Pixel with the third 'smallest' battery. Xperia also did well, I'm not surprised about Apple tho.
Why s10 + is not there ????
had to give it back :( but I'm on the list for note 10... note 10 vs mate 30 on the list :)
Did you compare brand new phone ?
For your information Xperia 1 doesn't stay on 4k all the time. It automatically switch to 4k only if there is 4k content on screen.
sony looks so classy amongst this phones....
Indeed Xperia 1 better .
Something's wrong here. There's no way the oneplus 7 pro lasts longer than the p30 pro. Even an older one. It not only has a smaller battery, but a higher screen resolution and 90 hz refresh rate. I call BS, but I still think the pixel would have beaten all of these phones.
Came here for the Xperia 1. Definitely impressed
So what you're saying is the regular non-5G Mate 20 X would have been ultra beast?
