  • For more than 36 years, Rob Jennings has been a consistent presence on Action News, anchoring the weekend newscasts with his warm, yet authoritative persona. Jennings joined the Action News team in July of 1977.
His career at 6abc has taken him from Three Mile Island to the White House and even into the wild blue yonder, flying with both the Air Force Thunderbirds and The Navy's Blue Angels.
In 2003, Jennings was inducted into the Philadelphia Broadcast Pioneers Hall of Fame. Jennings has made a lasting impression on the Philadelphia news business, and the impact he has had on WPVI is widely known.

WPVI-TV Philadelphia was the only station that has been using the format Action News when it first went on the air.

I don’t live in Philly, however I’ve been traveling there at least once a month for work the for at least the last 20 years, and every time I’m in town I watch channel 6. I like how the same people have been working on this newscast for many years. Kind of like a family.

As goofy as it sounds it sort of a tradition for us to sit down together and watch the channel 6 news. Jennings was one of the best. Once Gardner retires it just wont be the same.

+Luis Coqui I dread the thought of Jim retiring.

+ThatGuyInPhilly It will i agree. Though. It might be time for some new blood. Him and Vernon been around for too long. Sometimes change is good.

+Luis Coqui And Rob was younger than both Jim and Vernon.

+ThatGuyInPhilly It's clear that Jim is one of the lucky ones in that he truly enjoys what he does. As the saying goes, "if you truly enjoy what you do, you'll never work a day in your life". If he were in it just for the money, he would have retired long ago because he certainly has made his fair share.

philaman1972 True. I've only watched for 15 years(mostly online from LA or Albuquerque),but if he didn't enjoy coming on the air every night at 6 and 11,he would have retired long ago. Jennings was my favorite..like having a good friend in your living room.

Abc Wpvi action news has been a family outside our own family. Miss you Rob, and Jim and you have been excellent and likeable news anchor men. Lisa Thomas Laurie and Monica Malpass excellent anchor women as well. What a news team, past and present. We love and miss you all, but hope for the best.

Imagine working 36 years in one place now? It's unheard of! I think this pretty much sums up what kind of operation 6abc is.

My friend has been in his job for 21 years...I cant phantom the thought of been in the same job for that long. Maybe 10.....doing the same thing, same building, same faces, etc.

Luis Coqui Pretty rare these days indeed. I have a friend who works for 6abc and he told me it is really like a family there because the people in front and behind the camera are pretty tight and all work for the same goal.

philaman1972 i can see that happening at Ch 6..I meant more youre general 9-5 cubicle or warehouse type of gig..I had a job we worked from 1230 to 930..by the the time we got home and got settled most people were getting ready for bed...I worked with a group of about14 and we were all pretty close sorta like friends and your family at the same time.

+philaman1972 All of the ABC O&Os have a fmily atmosphere. Must be that Disney influence.

+John Fenner Lol.. well certain jobs can get like that..in the job where at work to 930pm we were all pretty close in there..reason been is by the time we got home and settled most others were getting ready to sleep..so we pretty much just interacted with each other and all hung out after work. You get a bond going sorta speak in that particular situation..it depends on the atmosphere..we didnt do much here but look at screens punch a couple of buttons so we had a lot of free time and the sups were lenient it was a fun place to be..

Cecily Tynan. She started out doing weekends, then was promoted to weekdays before taking over full time from the now-retired David Boreanaz, Sr., a.k.a. "Dave Roberts" (yes, the father of actor David Boreanaz, Jr.). Very prolific long-distance runner and is a regular fixture on the Broad Street Run, the Susan G. Kohman Run, and the Philadelphia Marathon (even running it when she was 6 months pregnant!).

Action News has the best-looking reporters in Philly.

  • @markquigley1690
    @markquigley1690 10 років тому +1

The Action News format is so awful...no story was permitted to broadcast beyond 90 seconds...so basically "There was a massive nuclear accident on the east coast and several lives were lost --but we don't have video" (next segment) Unfolding now, "Dog and cat become friends!"
Fire, floods and car chases have become go-to's of the format. Forget in depth coverage of ongoing issues...cheap easy, police radio driven reporting is the standard.
    Thanks, Action News!
