I understand that stopping when a child starts to cry may help to decrease negative experiences with toothbrushing, but what about a child who has demand avoidance and realizes that when he cries he won't have to brush his teeth?? There are currently no reenforcers strong enough to get him to want to brush his teeth without being forced.
If there is crying, you have pushed too far! We want to slowly add each step without crying. We want to prevent crying, not stop brushing when they cry. So you may start with reinforcement for just touching the toothbrush to his lips successfully. Then you'd move up to just in mouth etc. You may also have to look at different types of toothpaste. Our dentist is great! She went in there terrified but he worked with her and with each visit it got easier

It is hard to find for sure. Look for a behavior analyst in your area who is specializing in adults with autism for more resources.
