2017 French RIER MRE Review Duck Cassoulet Ration Individual Exercise Reheatable Taste Testing

- Used on training missions, this French single meal MRE has a menu featuring gourmet foods like Duck confit with sausage & white beans, decadent pate, and a vanilla pudding with Madagascar vanilla bean. Probably one of the most gourmet and utmost of quality single meal rations.

Fun Fact: Cassoulet is the unofficial dish of the French Foreign Legion. They have a retired veterans facility and museum of the FFL in the south of France (Aubagne) where they make wine and jars of Cassoulet which you can buy. Tasty as hell and it supports veterans!
Also nice that veterans who can't adapt back have a place
I now have to go to southern france...
@@murphy7801 As an American who loves our military; i love that
Then facility is on Puyloubier
That is because the “home” of cassoulet is Castlenaudary, which is also the home of the Legion’s training regiment, the 4th RE.
Steve, I play your videos for my residents. I work at a senior home. A large percentage of the seniors are vets or wives of veterans. We all find what you do very interesting. It hits close to home for a lot of them. Thank you for continuing to make people smile. Much love from Pennsylvania.
Finally! Another Pennsylvanian ! Let’s go eagles!

Nice!
PurpleZebra let’s get that out onto a tray!
The vanilla “pudding” is literally something you can by in a classic French supermarket, I didn’t know it was also given to soldiers! I currently have some of them in my fridge haha
the paté and cassoulet too, the cassoulet is packaged differently though.
The biscuits are harder to find, probably possible through mail order.
If you go in some civilian "déstockage" market, you will find A LOT of these components of MRE.
haha nice
It's just custard, no?
These "pudding" comes as a dessert in almost every Polish Squad Rations, quite tasty, especially caramel one
Please note the small detail on the box of matches: It shows the arc de triumphe. So the soldier knows what to fight for. What a nice touch!
I noticed that! Very cool and great landmark.
The other side shows the Eiffel Tower.

Omg..Same feeling. But, you put it all in better words than I could come up with. Thank you :)
A good combatant is a combatant that eats well ! My father that made his service in french alp troops, 27eme Bataillon de Chasseurs Alpins, had super rations with local products, including super-rich food. You burn a lot of calories at this altitude and with all the effort made just by climbing it... You need some rich melted cheese, cream mont blanc (like the one on the video, its a cream with vanilla taste, exists at your local supermarket...).
Everything is thought to make you efficient during tough situations.
The recipe with beans and saussage is from Toulouse, a city in the south of France. A traditional recipe from there.
Lol he said "it's probably Toulouse sausage" in the video
@@johnr797 Yes, just a precision, it is and they have a good reputation of quality sausage in France.
The UN recently held a ration swap meet between military attaches from each member state. It was a momentous development in the cultivation of mutual understanding of other countries' cuisines. I did a taste test and found that French rations were generally the best. The Italians' weren't bad, either. And the Japanese stuff was much better than I expected. it must be nice to live in a country that knows how to cook. Those French rations... Delicieux!

Steve, I need my dose of cup taps. That jump cut hurt my soul.
Of all the rations you go through, I really love the European rations (and some of the middle eastern/ Asian ones too), they just all seem to have cool and unique items that are regionally distinct and actually look delicious. Especially when compared with the American rations that are usually loaded with gas station food.
So many great ideas! I am always looking for cool new things for my own emergency rations
I think part of that is because somewhere along the line some officer looked at what privates were eating when they weren't at the DFAC and saw all the gas station food they were eating and went "Oh, okay, so this garbage, got it...as long as they eat it...."
I do notice that the Anglo countries like more sweets in their rations. I suppose a long term effect of the Victorian love of sweets spreading out across the old empire. The French MRE is top of my list, in quality and variety. I also like various eastern european ones as well. Oddly, I like the compressed cereal bars from chinese MREs too.
Well, this definitly looks like French gas station food to be honest.
@@Dragongaze13 Definitely
