Taking another look at autopilot and radio navigation in the Avro Vulcan in Flight Simulator

- We're back in the JustFlight Avro Vulcan today, covering the autopilot and radio navigation once more. I make a mistake early on referring to the center position of the lateral flight director - the center position is TACAN - but other than that, I cover off quite a lot of different subjects, and show some gotchas along the way about rotating the compass card while using Bomb/HDG mode. To close out the flight we fly ILS into Mildenhall, and go plane spotting :)

Note - I make a mistake while first talking about the central lateral flight director mode early in the video - the central position is TACAN mode! I realise later - but wanted to put this comment in before 20 people point it out (I mean, they still will anyway - but at least I got in first lol). Never edit, never surrender :) Also - I say Mildenhall several times - we landed at Lakenheath :)
My understanding with old nav equipment is to hand fly the aircraft into the altitude needed (wings level) before engaging ALT hold functions, else it porpoise and 'hunt'. Actually, horizontal tracking is far more challenging ... it will hunt left and right quite a bit more than modern aircraft. This is very clear to see when using GPS to control track. Whilst these old nav systems do indeed work, as your excellent video demonstrates, there is a 'proper procedure' to adhere to in order to not get all mixed up. It also brings to the fore the old topic of 'North Up' Vs 'Track Up' ... for which there are ardent supporters of both and no real absolute 'right way' answer .... each to their own ...... Brilliant Jonathan.. I really learnt a lot from that. Just as an aside in the RN we used the term 'bullseye' for those 'indicator balls' as you call them.
My uncle was a navigator in one of these, so I'm kinda looking forward to giving this aircraft a try in the sim, even though I'm more of a piston aircraft fan - jets have never really been my thing.

So far I have never touched the lower pitch knob on the FD selector. For an ILS I turn lateral to GP and engage both TRACK and GLIDE buttons on the autopilot - seems to track perfectly for me. Other than that I've used VOR and Heading with LOC and BOMB as you say.

Great video Jonathan! Thanks for providing so much info about this really cool plane. I’m not sure if this request is your channel’s style or not, but I was on the marketplace last weekend and found a RQ-4 UAV made by Heaven Designs. It’s pretty fun to fly, and so far there’s almost zero content about it, and I was wondering if you’d give it a try and find some tricks that others haven't found!
Isn't the whole point of UAVs that they're semi autonomous ?
No DME while on VOR... wrong.
Look 5 o'clock from HSI you'll see a small gauge... it reads 0-10-20 that's ur DME.
Not great but at least it's something especially when doing an ILS.
I think using AP HOTAS BIND can stop toggling after a few times. I could not see in VR if the ENGAGE toggles but all combinations of pressing that and then reselectng the AP MODE e.g. TRACK would not operate again. GS did work without APPROACH being ON. Not sure it is all as it should be. Sure enough the ILS can be a bit offside and the GPS at times does not select our Runway for Approach Phase at all. In VR there is way too much VR COCKPIT ZOOM to even try working out where to add one as it has no PROCS like other Garmins to set this.

I have found that if you are above 40000ft (i think you have to be) and you use IAS mode when you are at, lets say, 0.81 mach, and go full throttle, the plane will not use the excess power to climb and will accelerate, i dont know if its a bug or a real limitation of the plane. This where the condicions where this happened to me.
I've seen a few oddities while playing with it - during a live stream the other day the autopilot stopped working for a while - but then came back to life a few minutes later... of course there could have been a good reason for it - just something we don't know about yet.

Bonjour. Merci pour ces explications. Il faut avouer que cet avion n'est pas facile à diriger avec ce système. De plus, lorsque je suis un cap en mode loc, l'avion part de droite à gauche et de gauche à droite sans interruption comme s'il cherchait sa route. Je stoppe alors le pilote automatique, stabilise l'avion et le réenclenche. Au bout de quelques secondes il recommence, s'agit-il d'une erreur de ma part? En tous cas les anglais, vous avez de beaux avions .... la preuve 👏👏👍

Good morning. Thank you for these explanations. It must be admitted that this plane is not easy to steer with this system. In addition, when I follow a heading in loc mode, the plane goes from right to left and from left to right without interruption as if it were finding its way.
