- In this episode I ride over 400 kilometers from Bluefields, towards Matagalpa in Nicaragua. My plan was to check out an abandoned gold mine, but when I arrived, I learned they opened up the mine again a year ago. I get a close look on how gold mining works here. It's an interesting and heart breaking peek into the lives of the people that work here.

Unfortunately the calculation of 125 grammes of gold against the current gold price, divided by 6 people per week, is NOT the correct math to calculate how much the people working underground make. The workers do not even make the slightest fraction of that :(

It would be interesting if you meetup with the UA-camr Dan Hurd, a hobby miner in the Pacific Northwest of Canada. He has his own mining claims.
Remember calculating shaft locations and depth using dip angles in Geology class. My prof spent time in Australia opel and gold mining. That is very tough going working a mine by hand.

Do you think any tourist would stay in a guest house like Noraly who probably sleeps on a hammock, no a/c running water etc, and then go to the outhouse. Oh yea, sleeping on a job like those miners has a whole different meaning than in the USA.
You say it's humbling to see how hard some people have to work to make a living, but I think the way those same people seem to be so welcoming and happy to share glimpses of their lives is even more so. More and more, these videos you are posting are not only vlogs but significant documentaries. Truely fabulous watching. Thank you.

OMG..... what a hard hard life. I am amazed at your courage to go down there with the frayed ropes and filming the whole time. I appreciate your respect for those that are working in such harsh conditions for so little return. Too many people do not have an adequate respect for labor. Those miners are doing what is necessary for their community of families. All of them are honorable people.
This video was a lesson to all those who have watched it. It shows how some people are living in a hard and difficult manner. Life for some is not rosy and Norally's exploration shows them all.

According to Wikipedia, the municipality of Muy Muy was named by the Matagalpa people, who were the indigenous group native to the area. In their native language "muimui" translates to "the best" (sp. los mejores).[1] Translated to Spanish it's "very very", and in nawat it translates to "otter", which were once found in abundance in the region.
I spent most of my adult life in mining. It ultimately ends up the same: dig rock, crush rock and use a liquid to separate the heavy stuff (the valuable metals) from the rock. Is it worth it? Only as long as society puts a value on those metals. I just returned from taking a dozen geology students on a field trip and explained Noraly, the geo-chemist, to them. Now they'll know why I always give her that 'beeeg thumbbs upp!'
When it comes to gold, silver or other "precious metals"; what's it worth? Well the Spanish found that out, or at least English pirates found that out! It seems that these metals always drives people to point of looking after things that in the end have no real value!
@@andrewf.castaneda4695 But I would prefer that the investment bankers trade in gold and silver rather than in commodities such as wheat. When they use foodstuffs as money it pushes the price up to the point where people can't afford to eat. If you can't afford gold who cares. But if you can't afford to eat that's bad.

Maybe 6 grammes per ton, that’s 20 tons in bags every week to reach 120 grammes. Working long hours in harsh conditions. Respect. And good for us to hear Alaska’s humming again after last week. 😊

What to say? The hard labor, the poverty.... still the people persist, They live and love, learn and grow old like people anywhere. We may feel thankful that this is not our lot, but there seems little real reason that life has to be this hard. Especially in an age where so many have so much; where so many seem to never have enough.
You said recently that, "it's not all romance" on the road, and some of this is hard to see. But it's something we all need to see; need to be reminded of just how well off we are and just how small some of our "problems" really are.

When my brother and I went on walking holidays our shortcuts invariably led us to a river too deep to ford, or a field with an angry bull in or a footpath that came to a dead end. Mind you, or short cuts often took us to the most beautiful or interesting part of the walk. I think Noraly has the same outlook as we had. We would never walk down the road unless we had to. If we found a little track leading off the road we would always go and explore down it and see what we could find!

I work 37 hours a week, and I’m pretty confident in that I will return home each day witout being too tired.
This is a dangerous back breaking struggle no matter what you call it.

that was great Norally.... that reminded me of being a kid in the 60s and my buddies and i crawling into tiny limestone caves in East Tennessee and not realizing how much we were putting our lives at risk.... great times.....also later in school going into zinc, copper and talc mines...and then later working as a coal mine in low coal seams

It is interesting for me to see how there is alot of similarities between South American/Caribbean countries and most Sub-Saharan Africa countries, from towns and rural areas and nature in general.

I like the way they paint kerbs and lampposts and shops and things bright colours like orange and yellow. Here in the UK everything is grey!
Those were the biggest blue eyes coming up from the tunnel. You never fail to deliver some of the most interesting destinations and people on your travels. I keep wondering if you will find as amazing things when you get to the USA. You will no doubt have to work harder to find them when you get here.
