      Like a more down to earth and less hippy-esque Russel Brand who doesn't go too far with explanation.

    Beautifully put across and delivered. It is amazing how the use of a few descriptive words can enrich an idea. Now go and watch ex-Leyton Orient coach John Sitton's half time dressing room "gee-up" - a different range of the vernacular but equally brilliant in its own right !

    "There are an estimated 7,100 languages spoken in the world, but only six are designated as official languages of the United Nations. One of these is English, and although it is the dominant lingua franca of modern times, less than 5% of the world's population are native speakers."

    I don't agree that every use of language is at the same level, if that is what he is implying. I agree with Stephen in the importance of using language for pleasing and for self pleasure, although grammar and language rules in general are there for a reason, so we can have certainty over how to interpret that message we are reading or listening. I don't think he dismiss the importance of setting rules, but the message he is giving may sound a bit confusing depending on your approach to it.

    Ever wonder what your thinking would consist of if you knew no language? When my daughter majored in linguistics in college, I thought “sounds kind of useless.” Now i realize it is the most fundamental science, and begets all others.

    I see Mr. Fry is not well versed in underground Hip Hop. That's aiight tho, it's probably not his "cup of tea". But I wished he knew how many hundreds of thousands of young ppl out there listen to and write exceptional lyrics over old school beats.

    • @dhbassman
      @dhbassman 5 років тому +2

      Agreed...... Also people who write Your instead of You're, There instead of Their or They're blissfully unaware of the differences! I often wonder what kids are learning at school or is it that text speak has become so normal now that it will slowly and insidiously take over and swallow up the correct way of writing our language?

      @@dhbassman A language is a living thing that grows and shifts and mutates in order to stay relevant and thus survive in the mouths of those who speak it. Spelling conventions are an attempt at tying language down, but sometimes language wriggles free, and so sometimes people write 'your' instead of 'you're', for example. This may look inelegant to your eyes, but it is also an entirely logical spelling, and it saves space and time. Just bear in mind that humans evolved the ability to speak, and so it is a 'natural' phenomenon in that regard. Writing is an invention - the whole thing is arbitrary, and any spelling 'convention' or grammar 'rule' are just decisions that somebody made. We tend to follow them in the name of facilitating communication and preventing misinterpretation, but if somebody does not follow them, they should not be criticised for dragging down standards - who decides on the standards anyway?

    What makes us human?
    Perhaps the ability to understand a civilised community accept democratic decisions is what makes us human. At least I would argue that is what makes us a good human. I liked Stephen Fry a lot until he actively campaigned to overturn the democratic vote on BREXIT and suggested we impose a minority view just because it is what he wanted. This is the way that fascist dictatorships are formed - a minority claining to be 'better' than the majority and forcing everyone to ignore democracy. Disgraceful behaviour from someone who is just using his fame to promote his personal political opinion.
