Hey thanks for watching! A reference cast is an actual cast of a animal nose and nostrils to use as reference to be able to sculpt details back in to the form and or clay you are working with. This will let you be able to carve out the nostrils on the form so it will have the correct anatomy.
Do you measure every deer head before ordering the forms? Or do you have a certain measurement you order for all of your mounts that you think fit well for all around?
Hey thanks for watching! I will measure each deer that I mount. They will all be different depending on the age and what area of the country they are from. There are three different measurements I will take. The (A) that is from the tip of the nose to the front corner of the eye. The (B) measurement is around the neck across the atlas and the (C) measurement is just below below the ears. Go watch my How to skin a deer for taxidermy video. I go over the process step by step.
What is a reference cast for the nostrils? And how would it help you drill the holes?

Hey thanks for watching! I would say about five minutes. It doesn’t take very long using the stout rougher.
This is very informative. Thank you for sharing. What type of deer form is this?
Hey thanks for watching! That’s a 6300 semi sneak from McKenzie taxidermy supply.

Could you also do a video showing how you store hides if it is going to be a while before you can get to them?
Yes I will be going over how I store hides in the next part of the tanning video.
