Man I stumbled into this late, but worth it. Great series!
You mentioned during any point of the process if you can’t continue immediately, you can return the cape to the freezer to preserve it, I’m just wondering at what point prior to the cape going on the form would the cape be ‘shelf stable’ ie able to be kept at room temp without spoilage
    Cheers from Australia 🇦🇺

Hey thanks for watching! After you apply the tan the hide is stable. You can mount it on the form at this point or return it to the freezer to be mounted later on. It will pretty much last forever if it’s frozen after it’s tanned.

Thank you for the videos! I want to make a soft buck skin and it’s my first time. I have the McKenzie tanning solution and acid but I am having a hard time finding the tanning oil you mentioned. What was that product called and where can I find it?
    Thank you!

Hey thanks for watching! The tanning oil I use is knoblocks liqua soft you should be able to get it from McKenzie or Matuska taxidermy supply. McKenzie also makes a tanning oil that works with there tanning product. I will be using it in the future for my flat skins.

When I ordered my supplies from McKenzie I was able to purchase the pickle but not the tan because they have a shortage. I ordered krowtann as a replacement. Is it okay to use the McKenzie pickle and then the krowtann tan?

The krowtann I think is a acid pickle and tan all in one. You want need the McKenzie safety acid if you use the krowtann. If you use the krowtann just follow the direction on the product.

Do you ever static tan or pressure tan? Just curious. I static tan and then oil the hide hoarse it up overnight and then hang.

Hey thanks for watching! I only do wet tans with the brush/rub on tans. McKenzie tan is what I have used for the last few years. I started out using the knoblocks liquatan and have had really good results with both.

I don’t have to Tan if I am going to just mount it correct? Only if I am going to make a rug or other things.

Hey thanks for watching! If you are going to mount it or make rug it needs to be tanned. It is the best way to make a hide last a long time if cared for correctly.
