I don't understand the stepfather's reason to create this seperate identity in the first place if he was just going to ditch him the second they were to marry?
I know this is rather late in the day, but I thought I'd answer your query regardless. The stepfather knew that if the daughter got married to someone else, he would no longer have access to her income. He also knew that she was true and of a very sweet, innocent disposition. So he, in character of the fiance, forced her to promise to remain true to him no matter what happened. And then as the fiance he disappeared. The girl, being sweet and innocent and believing he will come back will remain single and true to her "fiance" until his eventual return. This way she stays at home, doesn't go out looking for suitors and the father has access to her funds for longer.
