George is just amazing. The way he thinks, the form of his writings, the political and religious mesagges... i wish i could be like him one day, this man has become my mentor as a writer. Greetings from Bogotá Colombia George, and i wish someday i can be able to follow your steps. Thanks for those amazing histories.
Such an erudite man, I could listen to him talking about virtually any topic for hours on end. At the end of the interview though, I got the sad feeling that he's not really happy with his rise to fame following the HBO series. Success is a double-edged blade that's for sure.
Miss Doland did an excellent job interviewing GRRM. She asked thoughtful questions, and most importantly, let George answer them without interrupting. Brava, Gwyneth! Bravo, GRRM!
I think what she wanted to George to say when she asked about female roles in history was for him to "admit" that his representation of women in history is unrealistic and they were mostly powerless. Then the press could have lots of provocative quotes implying that George said all women in history were useless and strong women never happened. George agreed with her just enough to placate her constant insistence without giving her what she most wanted. A-Star to him.
But her assumptions are wrong. Just look at Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, Elizabeth I, Aggripina the younger(Neros mom) who are just a few women who changed the world.
Agree with you completely. Also just to add that often the husband would be blamed and punished for their wife's crimes. And that a woman could hide behind being "a woman" in order to twist events, or to plot. Like Elizabeth Woodville and Margaret Beaufort did. She might've been a "feminazi", and only wanted to prove some kind of point about women being constantly raped and trodden upon and overlooked for thousands and thousands of years. History is a little more complex than that. Wish people would realise that more in all honesty.
Victoria Cariad No kidding. History IS fact, but we have to remember a lot of what happened in the past was driven by human emotions, experiences, beliefs, etc. which were just as complex back then as they are today. I think history is really a reflection of today, like the old saying, "to understand your future, first understand your past." It's a foible of the human mind to try to bring a dichotomy to things that CANNOT be a dichotomy. What I mean by that is most people tend to think of things as black and white, what I've come to call immature thinking. Life isn't a dichotomy, history isn't a dichotomy and certainly cannot be black and white. When I read about Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, etc. I think of them as people, not as a figure. Yes, Joan of Arc was a strong willed woman who wanted to save her kin, but she also was batshit insane thinking angels spoke to her that she would be doing God's work. Yes she obviously was an amazing woman, but she was human. She had faults, she had those feelings, and it drove her to do what she thought was right. This is why I don't put a dichotomy on things, there is ALWAYS much more to a story than simple black and white thinking.
I don't know what you're smoking Arkantos. This interviewer did an excellent job and asked compelling questions in a way that provoked thoughtful responses. Clearly, she admired the books and the show but she also asked some challenging questions, and intelligently. This was no softball interview. That's what made it interesting, IMO.
The way he describes his memory of characters us the same as Toni Iomi, can remember thousands of riffs some being 20 years old, but can't remember the name of someone he meet yesterday. Lol.
I want him to take his time with the books because they're so epic and wonderful. But there's a small bit of me that's terrified that he'll die before he finishes. I want to know where all of those wonderful characters end up
Witches, Religions, Dragons, Vampires... people were certainly not knowledgeable back then and believed in some silly things. Thankfully we now know much about how the universe works through science and we're able to push these medieval fantasies out of reality. Well... almost all of them. Humanity is still working on some of them.
The way that life itself works (evolution, technology, genes and memes etc) is far more interesting than any magic. It's all so very complex, yet able to be explained in great detail. Magic can't be the most underrated part of reality, because it is not and never will be a part of reality. The definition of magic is "The art of producing illusions as entertainment". Illusions are things that appear to be real, but aren't. They are not part of reality. If we had "real" magic today, we wouldn't call it magic, it would simply be normal energy that occurs in reality. Shooting fire from your hand would just be called "Producing fire" and how it is achieved would be written in great details in textbooks throughout the world.
That's a very modern view. Things that couldn't be explained have been part of reality for centuries up until now. They mostly aren't anymore, you're right. But your dismissal of it kind of proves my point that it is underrated. I'm a bit sad about the whole development, even though I understand the necessity and still want the world to keep going forward.
He's a brilliant writer. Not certain that I admire him as a person. I obviously don't know him but I think a loved writer is someone like jk rowling or cs Lewis, whereas a good writer is George r r Martin. but he's in it to write and I don't think anyone is successful because they care for how someone feels about them lol. I find him to be a realist and a very perceptive intelligent guy. Just picked up his book last night, went through HBO series many times can't wait for it to come out.
she is talking down her own sex here ... there were woman in history that resemble characters in his books im thinking cleopatra , joan of arc, various queens of britian ... like he said a story about the typical knight leader would be boring
Caesara(Empress) Aggripina the younger of Rome is probably the inspiration for Cersei. A manipulator who was rumored to have had incestual relations with her brother Caesar Caligula, has her husband(her Uncle Caesar Cladius) killed so her unstable son(Nero) able to become Caesar. He killed her shortly afterwards. She was considered one of the most powerful women in Roman history.
Well I'm glad to hear he obliterates the TV adaptation from his minds when he writes remaining books! Btw war in bosnia and herzegovina ended 19 years ago, not few year, actually before the publication of the first book in the series.
6:36 hey thanks for an insightful, interesting question that is actually about the story..most interviewers never do that. too bad george replied with the old Faulkner anecdote for the 10000th time. nice try tho
"Maybe George should stop doing fuckign appearances and interviews and comic conventions etc etc AND JUST WRITE!" --Maybe you should be patient and wait like the rest of us for the books to be finished. When they're done, they're done. That's the bottom line. I, for one, don't want him to try and rush these books. They are the most riveting, engaging, amazing books I've ever read, and hope he takes his time to make sure they are in line with how he originally envisioned them. So STFU and wait.
casemonsterxxx Yeah, you definitely hit the nail on the head there. I can't presume to know what goes on in GRRM's head, but I'd wager he's probably a bit pissed by having to make a comparison to Tolkien in every single interview he's in. The two are far too different, IMO. Personally, I think comparing his works to Robert Jordan's or Steven Erickson's is much more fitting, but that does indeed narrow down the number of people who'll know WTF he's on about :P

And fame is a sword without a hilt... ^^
mori1bund Ha! YES
mori1bund That is something I can imagine reading in an ASOIAF book. Nice saying ^^
Peter K It is from the books. the actual quote is "magic is a sword without a hilt"
r000n1 Exactly! :-)
Almost cute hearing him say that book 4 took "a really long time". It took 5 years. Here we are starting the 11th year waiting for Winds of Winter.
13 now, see you in another 2 years 😂
George's patience toward those interviewers deserve praise. And ours toward him deserves TWOW.
Hard to believe he was feeling this way 8 years ago - EIGHT YEARS! 🤦♂️
Miss Doland did an excellent job interviewing GRRM. She asked thoughtful questions, and most importantly, let George answer them without interrupting. Brava, Gwyneth! Bravo, GRRM!

She needs to study history a bit more. Women have ruled empires.
But her assumptions are wrong. Just look at Joan of Arc, Cleopatra, Elizabeth I, Aggripina the younger(Neros mom) who are just a few women who changed the world.
She's probably a feminazi
Agree with you completely.

Awesome interview, thanks for sharing.
Best Interview so far of him!
Take your time bud, i'll be patiently waiting :)
Why is it that everytime i see an interview with George, if i feel like the interviewer hasn't read the books?
Amazing interview, she asked all the questions I wanted and didnt get in other videos...
Lovely interview.
Very good interview!!
I'm 9 minutes in and am compelled to write....I....Fucking....Love....George RR Martin.
Song of Ice and Fire novels....
It's 'The Song of Ice and Fire' series, not the 'Game of Thrones' series.
Easy mistake to make, usually by fans of the tv show.
waiting for the next book. i envy his talent. great writer.

It really annoys me when people call the books 'Game of Thrones books'. It's 'A Song of Ice and Fire'!
What really annoys me is when people call rectangular storytime page-turners books.
It really doesn't matter. Plus he referred to it as such anyways.
If a longer wait leads to higher quality, it's worth it.
do you still believe that if you are still alive?
When he talked about great shows and said "NYPD Blue, Hill Street Blue" I thought "Blues Clues" was going to be next lol
he is an amazing writer
After he writes the last book I'd like to see a movie with his screenplay
Five years from now, the series won't be finished and we'll still be waiting for Winds of Winter.
When it's done it's done.
The way he describes his memory of characters us the same as Toni Iomi, can remember thousands of riffs some being 20 years old, but can't remember the name of someone he meet yesterday. Lol.
He seems like a nice guy
I want him to take his time with the books because they're so epic and wonderful. But there's a small bit of me that's terrified that he'll die before he finishes. I want to know where all of those wonderful characters end up
can someone pls make a gif of dat nod at 10:45? LOL

are you saying that ManBearPig isn't real?
He is too real! I'm super cereal!
Why are you thankful of that? Magic is the most underrated part of reality. I wish I lived in a time where it still was part of our lives.

GRRM:i just want to crush your souls :D
It's not "Game of Thrones" its "A Song of Ice and Fire"
Well I'm glad to hear he obliterates the TV adaptation from his minds when he writes remaining books!
Btw war in bosnia and herzegovina ended 19 years ago, not few year, actually before the publication of the first book in the series.
Just don't kill Arya Stark and we are okay BRO !
6:36 hey thanks for an insightful, interesting question that is actually about the story..most interviewers never do that. too bad george replied with the old Faulkner anecdote for the 10000th time. nice try tho
I lova your books a so mach, if I don'ta see a new book soon Ima gona die!!! (thumbs up if you get this godfather reference).
in Afghanistan us soldiers rap the civilian women and if they try to snitch on them to their commanders the women are punished.
HOLY CRAP SO MUCH SPOILERISM! If you are clever, you can catch a huge hint of whats to come!
Maybe George should stop doing fuckign appearances and interviews and comic conventions etc etc AND JUST WRITE!
Maybe you should get a life and in the process let others have theirs.
Designandrew:
Maybe GRRM is not your bitch.
He's being doing this even before his career took off and has no plans of stopping it anytime soon or likely never.

+TheCrimsonIdol987 Amen
George who? Gwyneth is pretty adorable.
He should write a Conan movie
He loves to talk about Tolkien I see
True but personally I didn't finish the movies so yeah .
Jaylen Johnson they kind of bored me to be honest. So much world building and lore, I couldn't care less if i am not invested in the characters.
Lol yeah man I get what you mean.
casemonsterxxx Yeah, you definitely hit the nail on the head there. oh wow you are most definitely true there my friend.
I wonder if raising money for the wolf shelter is George's way of making up for butchering the Starks?
so obvious that this interviewer didn't read the books...
didnt make much sense on religion and magic. if there are two religions that can do good things, they will compete. war continues.
donate to saving the wolves how about saving the starks.lol
