      I like them but I actually think they’re a bit over rated.
      Their marketing department lean too hard on the fact they used to work for a more famous amp company, they have some really shitty products in their range, some of which seem to be made by others and just labelled blackstar to pad out the range, etc.
      There seem to be two sides to blackstar - a team of amp builders who do genuinely care about what they do, and a corporate team out to put profits before all.
      It kind of feels like a team of engineers went into partnership with a former exec of McDonald’s or something sometimes.

    Reconsidering the Dept 10 Dual Overdrive for direct recording. This is one of the few demos where the pedal and the USB out don't sound horrible. The USB out with the cab rig sounds pretty righteous to my ear. I actually hear less "fizz" than I do in many of the other amp sim platforms. I won't know till I play one if the tube adds that mysterious "feel" factor, but seems to me that unless you need particular amps modeled, the Dept 10 might be a cool recording tool.

      @@Floortile83 tl;dr: Impulse response simulates a cab.
      It's basically a sound file which accurately models how a cab sounds through a mic. They're created by sending a very short impulse of white noise through the cab and recording what comes out - hence impulse response.
      Many devices and softwares support IR files so you can recreate the sound of a cab/mic configuration digitally without having the cab, mic or expertise to set them up. You can buy IRs (often as packages with different microphones and different microphone placements) and mix them together as you like. You can also get them for free.

      @@ledhendrix5054 We really respect Josh and JHS, his videos are always super informative. In Dept.10, the valve is used in exactly the same way as would be in a traditional valve pre-amplifier. The two sides of the ECC83 dual triode are cascaded together (i.e. one side feeds the other) to provide the high gain required to generate the desirable harmonics and overdrive.
      As with all Blackstar products, the valves work at proper HT voltages, they are not a gimmick and we would strongly (and seriously) recommend not attempting to replace them with transistors - this would be very dangerous.

      @@ledhendrix5054 I seem to recall Josh's points about valve pedals being dodgy in their design were based on the idea they're driven at 9V and used essentially as clipping diodes rather than amplifying elements; the description of these pedals says, "Driven by an ECC83 triode valve running at more than 200V internally" so I don't think that generalisation holds here.

    Josh Scott at JHS did an episode on this ‘tubes in a pedal to sound like an amp’ debate… turns out ‘valve pedals’ are a gimmick and if you remove the tube, and replace it with a transistor…it just sounds the same, because tubes need a lot of heat to sound different, … and they need way more power to sound different also, way more then what a pedal can safely provide.

      Good point. This pedals use a 9V/500mA power supply. The previous line of Blackstar valve pedals was the HT series. The first version ran on 16V/800mA AC power supply and the second on 22V/1.1A DC supply. Using the Ohm law, even the new 9V pedals have enough power to be able to transform the voltage to 12AX7 plate voltages(max 250V) without dropping under the plate current (1.5mA) characteristics. Physics work, but there is a question how the circuit is designed and the tube really get the correct voltage. Form my personal experience, I own a first generation HT drive pedal. The biggest difference I see is in the dynamic response. The valve reacts differently to the pick attack. If I missed something, please let me know, I like to learn :)

    • @bogdanlaiu8309
      @bogdanlaiu8309 2 роки тому +2

      I'm no expert in electronics, but from my understanding valve pedals are a gimmick due to the fact that running a valve at low voltage is senseless. But Blackstar claims that the internal circuitry runs at 200V so it might be a bit different than your usual valve pedal.

    • @edwardjons8684
      @edwardjons8684 2 роки тому

      As I remember it Josh Scott’s rambling 2hr discussion concluded that the value of having a tube depends entirely on the circuit it is used in. So ‘some’ tube pedals are awesome and others are a gimmick. Overall he seemed broadly indifferent personally to the tone and feel of tube pedals generally.

      Hey Nomlas! The 9VDC supply voltage is increased to over 200VDC by an internal boost circuit. The reason we have used a 9V supply is because this was the most popular request we had from guitarists for improvement of the original HT pedals. This is because 9V supplies are already on most pedal boards. Also, original the 22V power supply was difficult to source for musicians if a spare was needed.

      You would get a better idea of the pedals sound, but the high output overdriving the amp is part of its function, just like in SS distortion drives.

      @pariskatsafados1581 2 роки тому +1

      XLR and usb seem to be at the back so won't matter where you 'd place it. However, on the left it has the output and the cab sim output, so if you wanted to use both at once -one going to the amp the cab sim to the pa, you 'd need free space on the left, so it should be on the far left. And reverb, delay or mods to it's effects loop

  • @ptrisonic

    Can't you plug the outputs into the Return of an FX Loop? I mean rather than going through the pre-amp of the guitar Amp? P.

    • @terryenglish7132

      You could, it would be like having a different preamp. But overdriving the preamp or the preamp overdriving the effect in the loop adds to the sound.

      Hey! In Dept.10, the valve is used in exactly the same way as would be in a traditional valve pre-amplifier. The two sides of the ECC83 dual triode are cascaded together (i.e. one side feeds the other) to provide the high gain required to generate the desirable harmonics and overdrive.

    • @nekrovulpes
      @nekrovulpes 2 роки тому

      @@Blackstaramps I'm sure you guys know, as amp manufacturers, that there's much more to the sound of a valve amp than that. And I do own a fair few of your products, so I'm not just trying to slam your company. But nevertheless.
