I think the difference is that BTS has (uncommonly) chosen to do their military service together and prepared solo content etc ahead of time. They will definitely be 7 as soon as they are all back and I think it might change the way groups typically do their military service going forward

    • @OfficialAwkbe
      @OfficialAwkbe Місяць тому +28

I'd like to point out that other groups also went in as a group and set up a plan for their fans/members prior to BTS' enlistment, and it definitely showed promise as a revolutionary way to do their service. ONF was the first group to do their service together in 2021 and all enlisted within the span of a few weeks, leaving their Japanese member to promote ONF on various shows and work on his own skills. While they didn't go as far as to try to push out music during their service, their group service allowed them to come back as a group and they quickly were able to push out a comeback that got them their first win since debut. Seeing the success of ONF in 2023 despite no music promotions and BTS next year, I'm sure more will indeed follow.

@@OfficialAwkbe yup, ONF definitely pioneers of this method! A.C.E also did it this way, their maknae had some obligations so he had to go a few weeks after everyone else but they all discharged pretty close together. It was awesome to have them back so soon.

The fact that this video was made on the cusp between 3rd and 4th gen and now we're already moving into 5th gen shows just how much kpop has grown since and that a whole era has not been covered by this video.
I would also say that in terms of staying power after military you can't deny that suju's power to be where they are, still making comebacks, as they now celebrate their 19th anniversary. They may not be as popular as they once were but considering they were stuck in the military cycle throughout the 2010s and are still very much around and relevant both throughout and after they all finished.

28:55 I think with this discussion we have to keep in mind that after going to the military where you're forced to have routine and then getting out and being able to dictate your own life while the other members serve, it would be hard to go back to the crazy intense unhealthy schedule of an idol with constant comebacks, tours, promotions, reality shows, livestreams, variety shows etc. So I don't mind that groups release music a bit less often but with a better sense of their own artistry.

EXOL reassurance of sorts but also a reality check:
EXO will always be EXO and they WILL COME BACK. However...
There's no way of knowing when exactly that'll be and with what lineup (at least when talking about an official comeback under sm). The lawsuits between CBX and SM are messy to say the least and there are no updates on that so we can only hope and pray they come to a beneficial agreement for all parties. Won't get into that deeper, we'll have to wait and see. (CBX is right to stand up for themselves and their rights as artists!! Period)
Back to the reassurance! At this moment only one thing is certain: EXO are forever EXO as they have always promised us. Again, they will come back, we'll just have to wait for them.
PS. NEVER trust anything anyone (including SM) says about them, ONLY trust what the members say. ALWAYS TRUST EXO and we will be fine

Such an interesting question about post enlistment popularity - the only one I can think that has sustained a similar level would be SHINee. There are loads of group that are still together and active (Super Junior, BTOB, 2PM, 2AM to name a few) but arguably not to the same level as when they were in their prime. It also ties in with contracts expiring around the time they enlist as well and with members operating under different labels its a bit harder to get together.
On a different note would love to see you guys dive into g.o.d - probably one of the few 1st gen groups that are still actively together - they've got an amazing back catalogue!

Unlike what the video suggests, many kpop fans divide the line between 3rd and 4th gen at 2017. Groups like Stray Kids, Ateez, and TXT are all firmly identified as leaders of the 4th generation! (also as others mentioned, SVT and NCT are both firmly identified as 3rd gen groups)
Personally, I like to use the concept of "half" generations for the years where it gets blurred. For me, groups that debuted in 2017 feel like 3.5 gen since it's kinda hazy whether they should be considered as 3rd or 4th gen. The same thing with groups that debuted in 2022 (like New Jeans), which has kind of felt like the transition year from 4th to 5th gen of kpop and have many people divided as to how these groups should be identified (2022 would be 4.5 gen to me). But again, it is all up to everyone's own perspectives and opinions as to how they view the generations and compartmentalize them in their own ways!

27:02 there's plenty! SHINee are doing amazing (although they were always very popular) and smaller groups sometimes get a boost from having a comeback in places like kcon or music bank, sometimes a member goes into a survival show while waiting for everyone to return and gains a fanbase that is willing to wait. A.C.E and ONF have gotten more popular since they came back from their service and I feel like KARD also got a boost after J.Seph rejoined activities

Not to be too negative but EXO is at a disadvantage now more than ever because of their own company. Even before the members started enlisting, the company itself has limited EXO promotions within asia, while other bigger groups now have even western labels. It's difficult to "compete" when even your own company restricts you. And currently, half of the members are under their own label for solo work which could affect group activities due to scheduling and what not's. So i don't think EXO is even thinking about competition now. They just want to continue performing as a group for EXOLs and honestly, that is enough for me. I don't care about charts anymore. They have been there, done that. Maybe not at the scale some groups are currently achieving but their many Firsts in the industry speak of their impact. I just hope no one forgets ☹

Definitely agree. Even Chen at their final award appearance said there's no competition in music and I completely agree. I think competition is silly especially in music as a fan. It's all there for anyone to enjoy and we can pick and choose as we want. They're all talented and all making their own paths. I really hate it feels like such a competition and popularity contest in kpop now and of a group doesn't get this many streams or this many sales then they're a "flop" despite how great the quality is. The music industry is such a fickle business. What's popular today, won't be tomorrow so what matters is the quality of music that'll be left behind 10, 20, 30 years from now. What was number one on which chart isn't going to matter to generations ahead of us. I just don't care about chart success anymore. I want a no skip album lol

    • @Niki91-HR
      @Niki91-HR Місяць тому +4

EXO is on the level where numbers and such dont matter anymore. They are still the nations BG and their impact is huge like Big Bangs and both will forever remain on the top of kpop....as the Vocal Kings and Kings of K-pop.
But I still think the internet will break when Big Bang and EXO have a comeback again. Just saying.
All I need is them and SHINee and SM groups in general back on award shows and show how its done. Regardless of them winning anything but just to put out shows like it used to before ;)
Also I doubt EXO will ever disband regardless them being forever in SM or not.

BTS is on another level and their Army fans are loyal and has even increased despite going to military because of their successful solo stuff. It's hard to go back from military and be on top because there's always a new group that takes your place in your company or in kpop in general. But in BTS, they have made efforts to make their fans loyal with continued content all mapped out until 2025. And their records and popularity have not been surpassed by any group so far. Some strayed but most stayed loyal to BTS... because some/most Army are BTS fans and not kpop fans so they tend not to leave BTS for the next new shiny group.

Their storyline ended in 2020 but the pandemic and politicians delayed them for years. Which is why we get the 3 English songs (and BE) before they went into pre-military solo activities to develop more as artists.

About rivalries, having gone through the 2017 award ceremonies, I get those reasons why the EXO/BTS rivalry got so heated. Having had those award groups since then apologise for not treating EXO fairly kinda vindicates a lot of the feeling of the time. Personally, I have nothing but respect for the hard work and talent BTS have demonstrated, even though I've only got two of their songs on any of my playlists and usually skip them. They are not my style, but I still appreciate all they have done for Kpop. I hope both EXO and BTS come back with a vengeance as they both have so much to offer and inspire so many to explore Kpop further. Kpop is more than these two groups, more than Black Pink or Big Bang, there are so many brilliant artists to find. "BoA - Eat You Up" still fiyah to this day. RAIN still causing trouble with his 8 pack and body rolls. BigBang taking awards from a Pop Princess. Good times, struggle was real. Hope the genre lasts and no one is out to sabotage the industry.

What I can say is that kpop will keep changing no matter what. I hated how the music was becoming so Americanized and not how kpop used to be like. However I found that actually many kpop idols are more talented than ever and I found that while music is becoming more western it’s just to show how big kpop has become. Now I must say kpop scene is definitely going to be more new than ever because I have become the biggest fan of Plave. Ive never felt like this ever since exo. It’s weird to say this but it’s new but at the same time it reminds me of the kpop I loved being in. I remember watching 2nd gen reaction videos (2010 -2015) from westerners and comments were often, "why is it so colourful", "It looks very Disney". Then afterwards K-pop went through a sexy stage and then became more "cool" by westerner standards.

@@Eiko286 I disagree, I wasn't really a fan of 2nd gen K-pop but their music has been always influenced by American market, let's remember what were the music sounds dominating each year and you have plenty of groups fitting in them, even if K-Pop was or is more experimental (few include traditional elements on it), is very westernized and companies act like hungry money companies since the beginning (like every industry).
I literally didn't like K-pop because of the factured feeling that I got, but 3rd Gen, let's be honest, change everything. BTS change many things to K-pop, they didn't westernized, they made K-Pop be or have a spot in the map and now it is the genre with more listeners in the world.

Songs released since 2010 are defined as K-pop.
(K-pop began to take off when girl groups such as Kara and Girls' Generation entered Japan and became popular.)
From the late 2010s to the present, two groups, BTS and Blackpink, have had the greatest influence on raising K-pop's status.
Of course, it is true that songs from the 21st century before 2010 also contributed greatly to making K-pop.
K-pop has become a genre of Korean songs, not just Korean songs.

I'm really a 2nd gen fan and Korean, honestly the video seems to get more and more biased the more recent it gets. But just to add a couple of notes pre-3rd gen, I get and partially agree on Seo Taiji and the boys as the beginning of "K-pop" but I also think Kim Wansun is worth mentioning (for the fact that she went through the first K-pop style training phase; then Lee Sooman of SME learnt the know-how from her manager and upgraded the technique). Ofc there are many more other influences I could name from that era (80s-early 90s) but yeah. Also, although I was a TVXQ stan at that time and the rivalry between them and Bigbang after they blew up was pretty hostile, but YOU CAN NEVER HIGHTLIGHT ENOUGH how impactful Bigbang and Wonder Girls' success in the late 00s was. Yes, BoA and H.O.T. and TVXQ and all the other groups (or solos like Rain) were what made K-pop international first (in China, Japan and in Asia), and the latin American market has been growing for a while now, but that simultaneous successes of Bigbang & Wonder Girls in '07-'08 was foundational to the current K-pop scene's shape in many ways. Esp Bigbang changed the game and stayed that way for a very long time. E.g. G-Dragon was the first K-pop personality to start influencing the world's fashion scene (and still is). Also, not to mention that these two groups brought YG and JYP as the biggest powerhouses in K-pop, alongside SME.
I won't get into the 3rd gen bit, or about Bighit/HYBE bit, I wouldn't say the video is a complete bullshit either but could have been better.

They did influence e.g. the very American influenced girl groups in the 60s, or Sobangcha in the 80s. But that doesn't have much to do with the K-Pop history what we have now in the big picture. Not saying the K-Pop training system is one-and-only but I'd say it is one huge factor that defines K-Pop, and I think its very much worth it to mention in a 20-minutes history. You'll need max 1 minute for that.
Adding to that, Kim Wansun actually was one of the first gen export from the Korean pop music industry (I am being very careful here to not say "K-Pop"). Not only was she a sensational(ly popular) figure in the early 90s, domestically, she went over to Japan & Taiwan/Hongkong, got recognisably popular in the latter. (Record-breaking at the time)

They mentioned the trainee system shortly after mentioning Seo Taiji - including all the stuff that K-pop brought with it.
For details you need a seperate vid - which is also true for extra information about BigBang.
My guess is that when they made this vid they simply forgot her existence since this was way before them, too, and had only very little extra influence on K-pop.
The topic was a wide brush for the stuff that existed but is not actually already K-pop or funnels directly in it.
Did they mention that Japan introduced the ballads and classical music from Europe during the occupation? I don't remember.
In fact the care is for the bigger markets of K-pop which begin with Japan and China before mentioning the global one.
You are after details again - that may or may not have played a big role - it would need an expert to show those and I do not think that DKDKDTV have actually studied the music history of SK in detail for that.
      Did they mention Shin Joong-hyun?
Because he is interesting, too. But not necessary for K-pop.

It is always funny to see how people like you love to rewrite history and what is actually happening.
      Your world is very small.
For example no SM artist did ever make it into the HOT100.
Since this is only a 20 minutes video Exo actually pretty much got the attention they deserved.
Fans of all artists and that includes Army pout about a lot about this documentary because it excludes so much... because it is only supposed to be 20 minutes.
Danny loves to annoy Army and even David is not a fan but he does respect them so I do not know where you get your stance from other than you feel that Exo deserves better.
