    I have to say Goodyear have some great tyres. I am also running Asymmetric 5s and they are great. Quiet-ish on the motorway but the handling and breaking are great. Will be buying them again

      Goodyear are really going for Michelin who have had it easy recently. OEM on Mk8 GTI, 911 GT3 and the new Lotus too so some serious endorsements there.

      Agreed ... I went from the asymmetrics to the supersports on my mk7 r and I prefer the asymmetrics for daily driving. Noticeably stiffer sidewall on the SS and performance is nowhere near as good in colder or wetter conditions.

    I did have a set of 19” Santiago’s on my mk7, but after having a set of 18 Austin wheels with Cross Climates on for the winter - I’m an 18” convert! The ride is much more comfortable and the tyres are significantly less expensive.

    Being a bit of a "tyre anorak", that was particularly interesting - I'm seriously thinking of a set of aftermarket alloys with all weather tyres for my Wife's Edition 1 35 tfsi A3 & just leaving them on permanently (until the car goes back). It's very noisy on the standard 19" wheels (more so than my R Estate on Spielbergs, same tyre size). Thinking that's a better plan than full winters (the Audisport wheels are a nightmare to refurbish)!
    I run 17" Dijons on my 7.5 R Estate (same as you did last year) & whilst they are good (Nokian W4 full winter tyres), I've also managed to get them to break grip once or twice on warmer days. Can't help thinking that 18" Cadiz wheels & all weather tyres might be an alternative - although I would still use the 19" Spielbergs for summer.
    All in all, a great, practical & very useful "real world" review 👍

    I've been running these on our daily honda jazz for just over a year now. I'm generally very happy with them, perform well in the rain and snow, also good grip in the summer. However I've found they don't like to be pushed hard in the warmer months.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Scala, the dry performance will be interesting. Ultimately many drivers never push hard so for them they will be fine but I do want to see for myself how good or bad they are on warmer tarmac. Glad they work for you generally though 👍

    • @Scala598
      @Scala598 2 роки тому

      @@volkswizard I think you'll find them very good, I actually have no complaints with the level of dry grip, they are just a bit soft when it's hot which has caused excessive outer block wear to mine.
      However, I may be the only person to ever find the dynamic limits of a jazz...😂 so I appreciate I'm in a small group.

    I don't rate Plod around where I live but they do have Goodyear Vector All Season Tyres fitted to their vehicles. Myself, I have Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres on my VW and I am pretty impressed with them, despite them not being an all season tyre.

      Makes a lot of sense for police to run all seasons although I wouldn't want to do a pursuit on a hot day on them, F1 Supersport for that 😎

    Watched your older video and ended up with the Mitchellin Cross Climate 2. Already used them in the snow and it was a massive improvement, my old Pirelli were useless. I don’t drive my car hard so I’ll never go back to a summer tyre. Takes the anxiety out of driving in the winter.

  • @tturkington4149
    @tturkington4149 2 роки тому

    Good choice! I currently use winter and summer tyres on one of my cars but reckon for south east England you are better off with summer and 4 season tyres as the winter weather is so temperature variable. Had you heard Goodyear have a replacement asymmetric 6 tyres out now?

    Excellent informative video . Thank you . We live on the North Yorkshire Moors and run three cars . One , the Cupra ST300 has Hankook winters . The 2006 Fiat 500 has( after 38000 miles ) gone from Michelin cross climates to Vrederstein Wintracs all season tyres. That is because we have been so impressed by the Vrederstein Wintracs fitted to our sixteen year old MX5 . I have used winters /all season tyres since 2006, That was a bad winter here.My company C class auto three litre diesel was totally hopeless in the snow and icy conditions. I talked to a friend in Germany and he told me to get winters and problem solved. The transformation was amazing .You don’t need a SUV or four wheel drive except in extreme conditions just decent winter or all season tyres. Agree totally about a softer feel to winter tyres but it is marginal and soon forgotten about . I rate the Hankook full winters but don’t think they are as good as the Goodyear winters I had on my Golf Gti .

    Always enjoy your videos about the Clubsport, usually I agree with most of what you say but I think your unduly harsh about the Richmond alloys, I think to most ‘non petrol heads’ they look good and actually suit the car very well, sure there maybe better wheels available but they are no where near as bad as you make out in my humble opinion. I have exactly the same Silver Clubsport with the Richmond alloys and am always getting compliments.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  2 роки тому

      Hi Steve, my feelings on the Richmonds are purely my subjective opinion so there is no right or wrong. Likewise I love the Vossen wheels that were on the car but many didn't. I really don't think they are the wheel that should fitted to the fastest non-limited production GTI, that's all.

  • @stupot8572

    Good review Andrew. A possible wheel option if you want something better looking than the factory fit is the Protrack One 18x8 ET45. It's a smart, good quality German made wheel and TUV approved. Available for pretty decent money too. It's what I'd fit to my MK8 GTi if I hadn't already bought a set of R360's.

    Great vid! I put some 18” with Michelins CC2’s on my 7.5 GTD, coming from 19’s with factory Pirellis i found exactly as you said. They have a much less direct feel with lower ultimate grip level but the ride is massively better for daily driving and have great feedback to the wheel. I find the 19’s tend to give you nothing and then skit along the surface in a slide condition. I do enjoy driving the 19’s more though in the warmer months i have to say so would not use these all year round. Switching back for the summer months but worth the investment for the winter where a full winter tyre isn’t needed but that extra wet and cold grip gives you confidence whatever the weather. For the record my mpg (real world) dropped by around 2 on average from 19” summers.

    Interesting video as always! I have been running CrossClimate2 on my 2016 Golf GTI PP (225/40 18) since September and enjoy driving on them in all conditions! I never feel lacking in grip on the roads here in Scotland but if I had the option I would run CrossClimate2 for autumn to spring and PS4/PS5 or Eagle F1 for summer on the roads.

  • @nicholaspickering6430

    Very interesting video, not just the tyres but for me the choice of wheel size too. My GTD is coming (eventually!) with the standard 18” which I like the look of, and although at first I wished I had ordered 19’s was glad I didn’t as this is a company car and I’ll be doing 35-40k miles per year so comfort, noise and economy play a factor. I’ve also specced DCC so hopefully I’ll get the best of both worlds regards comfort and handling.
    The build week is next week so hopefully in a month or so I’ll have it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s delayed again (was ordered early August).
    The tyres look like the perfect compromise too, though I think I’ll have to wear out the tyres it comes on first!
    Looking forward to the anniversary review of the Clubsport - got my fingers crossed it will confirm I’ve ordered the right car! Different variation obviously but it shares the same “bones”.

    I've been running Vredestien Quatrac Pro all season tyres 225 50 x 18 on my X1 25D with adaptive suspension. Fantastic all round tyre, maybe biased more toward dry handling but these days unless you track day the car there are no penalties for going all season with a good brand.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  2 роки тому

      I LOVE Mk5 GTIs but the biggest way the newer cars have movec things on is efficiency and with the miles I do that makes a difference. A remapped Edition 30 won't be far behind on performance but mpg with be almost 50% more. On plus side they don't depreciate much so it's not all bad 😎

  • @RhysOlley

    I switched to these on my mk7.5pp after some dicey moments losing the back end below 5-7C on potenza s001s in December. The grip has been unreal at lower temperatures especially when wet, I can't induce any oversteer. However my steering definitely feels less direct and the car is more "floaty" (admittedly a bit better after 1K miles). I suspect I'll be wanting to get a set of dedicated summers before long but we will see how they do.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  2 роки тому

      Hey Rhys, yes that floaty feeling is definitely apparent but I actually quite like it in a strange way. Having said that, warm, dry day ane some performance tyres I am sure I will like even more!
