- Sharing with you some of our ride on the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley
Railroad as we ride the Elkins New Tygart Flyer in today's video.
We rode in the Parlor Car (West Virginia Central car) and had a
nice lunch with great accommodations. It was a really scenic ride
and well worth the trip to Elkins to ride if you ever get the chance.
Only thing I didn't like about it was you couldn't hear those F Units
as they were throttling up and working under load.
The Shavers Fork of the Cheat River we rode along side was
beautiful and had more rocks in it than a stone quarry has! LOL

The best way to explain "West Virginia Central" is that the WVC is the operator of the D&GVRR. The track is all state owned, but the WVC operates it and the D&GVRR owns the equipment. All of the trackage is former Western Maryland (well, B&O after 1983 and CSX after 1986 until the state took it over). BTW they have the original owner, number, and build date noted in the upper back end of the engines, so that C&O engine is actually ex-Milwaukee, and the WM is ex Canadian Pacific. I forget where the other WM F7 (63) came from. They interchange with the A&O at Tygart Junction on the former B&O / CSX Cowen Subdivision. A&O is a Watco property.

Love the username! I used to live out on what used to be "The Pike" outside of Wheeling. Took some drone shots of the old Valley Camp No. 3 property. Lovely stretch of holler.
WVC is the State ( WV State Rail Authority ) owned RR property in that area. State also owns the South Branch Valley RR which is why more than one name for the State owned RR properties. Just like the State owns the track and equipment at Cass Scenic. They also do the long term maintenance on the track at Elkins. D&GVRR is the operator (under contract to operate it and the Cass Scenic ) and the run at Durbin. For years the Cass Scenic RR employees were State employees. D&GVRR does routine track work on the WVC and marketing for all three. The former ( CSX ) WM track also was owned by the same company that owned the mill at Cass at one time. West Virginia Spruce Lumber Company owned Cass. Back then the Cass railroad operation was known as the Greenbrier and Elk River RR. When WV Pulp & Paper ( now known as Westvaco ) bought the operation, they expanded the line which includes the track from Bergoo to Tygart and changed the name to the G&CV RR ( Greenbrier & Cheat Valley RR to Greenbrier, Cheat and Elk RR ( GC&E RR) later ). That track later was sold to the WM. B&O controlled the WM until it was merged into the B&O in 1976. C&O had control of the B&O from 1963 and finally merged it into the C&O in April of 1987. SBD ( Family Lines ) then merged into CSX to form CSXT. Seaboard System is who qualified me to operate on the Homestead Branch ( Florida ) as a crew member as an Engineer, ( never actually ran on it ) Conductor ( did on one trip ) and Brakeman for our local museum. Homestead Branch is now out of service South of SW 137 Ave ( Just S of the museum ).
D&GV RR & 67 is the other FP7 A unit and is an ex Clinchfield RR / CSX loco.

We have a loco just like that here, but it hasn't run in probably 50 years. It's a BBQ place last time I checked.
The days my wife and I go see train stuff I always make up for it by doing whatever she wants for the rest of the day! Marriage is like a Chinese Finger Trap. If you fight it you will feel it is like a prison, but if you both give a little everything works out just fine.

@@ccrx6700 Sadly, good women like you're wife are far and few between. I grew up around the depression era WW2 gen and they had values and stuck with each other. When other kids my age were playing together, I was hanging out at the WW2 vets house helping him in his garage or mowing his lawn or doing something for him. Of course my grandparents were depression era WW2 gen.
That locomotive and train set is quite the antique. I remember these when I was a kid in the 1960s. It is nice they have kept them going for all these years. Thanks for showing this to us.

you may have seen it back then, but I do not know what road
number it would have had then or where it worked out of. Was

In the late '70s when I was a teenager, I used to love parking next to the train tracks after dark and watch the Mars lights scan the tracks on the older engines. It was always kind of spooky and lonesome...

The Chicago and Northwestern used to run commuter trains with F7s when I was a youth. The greatest memories I had with them, their horns. You can hear them for miles and they just had the sound of power. Your misses is adorable. We may come back to Western Pennsylvania next year and we are thinking of taking the Amtrak from California to Pittsburgh. Also I would love to check out Thurman WVA a ghost town that has a lot of railroading history. I enjoyed the video Dave keep them coming.

@@ccrx6700 It is Thurmond West Virginia - Amtrak is building a new station there. It is a flag stop only. Great video - lotsa green - where I live there is loads of brick and pavement. There are still coal trains that come through Thurmond. Check out Jaw Tooth videos.
@@ccrx6700 CSX and R.J. Corman run a lot of coal trains thru there and if I do make it out I let you know.
I like scenic trains. If you ever get the chance to go to Alaska, the Alaska railroad runs from Seward to Fairbanks. Very beautiful scenery with a lot of speed restrictions. One of the reasons being that it is in an earthquake zone and stopping quickly may keep you on the rails, if there is one. The other is the White Pass and Yukon Railroad that runs from Skagway, Alaska to Carcross, Yukon Territory. It follows the Klondike gold rush trail that the folks followed to seek gold in the 1890's. Very scenic. Thanks for the scenic vacation videos.
One of our former loco operators here actually went up to Alaska
to see the Alaskan RR. He said the locos were so clean you
could eat off them. White Pass and Yukon I read a couple of
years ago in Railway Track Structures magazine about them
building a new loop track. It would be awesome if we could
ever get up there to ride those 2. Very much appreciate your
watching and writing in today my friend. I used to watch Alaskan RR shows when they were on cable TV, but we don't get cable anymore.

Nice video Dave - good to see CP 4071 still in operation and was not scraped,( 70 Years Old) probably seen her growing up in North Bay pulling the passenger cars on the Toronto to Sudbury run before VIA Rail took over passenger service. Cheers and stay safe

Oh wow, F units are my fav! I first saw my first one when my granddad took me hunting rabbit outside Hancock next to the Western Maryland main line. I was maybe 7 and I got a huge kick out of the engineer tooting the horn for me. Hope you and your lovely bride enjoyed the ride.

@@ccrx6700 I enjoy birds as well and maintain 3 feeding stations, plus a squirrel feeder. In the spring we have a male/female pair of mallard ducks that also feed on the dropped seed from the feeders. There is a brook that borders our property. This is where they nest. We have a couple of other mallards that visit as well. Close to 20 species of birds feed at our location. Once in awhile Pete the possum and Lenny the raccoon stop in as well. I built a heated shelter for two cats that adopted us. They come into the house but do not linger long. I guess they feel uncomfortable with our puggle Shilo, but they all get along when they're out side.

my money, a gem to find there. She was in poverty when I found
her so understands the value of not wasting money.
Dave, The Emergency Fuel Cutoff is still there. You have to slide the cover up, and that exposes a ring hooked to a cable, Pull the ring and it trips the fuel shut off. The buttons are MUCH easier!!!! Thanks for showing us the F Units and the scenery and taking us along with you. The F units are one of my favorite engines. They were a great work horse!!!!
Thank you very much Dave, I had no clue that was the way it
worked. We only have the buttons on our locos, so my knowledge
is pretty limited to only those models we have. Your also right
in they were work horses, they pretty much put the final nail
in the coffin for steam. A great engine they were. Appreciate
your taking the time to write in and watch today my friend. And,
please don't ever be afraid to correct me when I make a mistake.

We rode the same train this summer. At the top the curve was too tight to go any further past the falls. Enjoyed it greatly. It was the first train ride for my wife.

Lucky to ride on this. I randomly passed where they stopped their engines and rolling stock haphazardly and after a bunch out research, finally figured out it was this RR.
I never did find where they parked all their stuff at, although I did
not have a bunch of time to explore, I tried to find it. Thanks so
much my friend for riding along with us and writing in today.

@@ccrx6700 I will be here forever I will always be a loyal subscriber and my brother signed up just the past weekend and he loves you videos he's seen three or four of them and he said once he has some more time to watch him he's going to watch all of them. And I got my father interested in your videos as well once he gets out of the hospital he said he's definitely going to be watching more videos where he is they're very strict on cell phones and electronics in his room for some reason because of all the equipment he's on so I got kind of yelled at when I brought my phone in there and I had him watch a couple videos but boy it put a smile on his face he said he's never heard of that railroad before but he said what a very interesting railroad where you work he said. Maybe in the future they might install a Ashley working set of dates with lights and bells on that railroad crossing you have in the yard where the train pulls in to unload the coal just before that I noticed a little railroad crossing there that would be awesome if they would just put a set of dates in right there. Not necessarily with the arms but at least with the lights in the bells that would be cool.

Always nice to be on a passenger train pickles more than just a few miles also is running above 10mph. Definitely some good scenery up there and then suddenly Out of the Woods and on a big bridge certainly prevents boredom as that is an area where homes and Farms become few and far between. I had forgotten about the former Milwaukee Road unit and if you look up at roof height above the rear truck the old Road number is painted on. It's sat here in Milwaukee for several years along with some stored Passenger cars and I'm sure I saw this unit in its prime pulling freights to Green Bay. All the more reason to see it in it's Second Life in WV. Glad the two of you had a fun time and had decent weather. Don't know how top line got pickles but rather travels a fair distance

The Reading and Northern actually has 4 EMD F-units, 2 from NS, and 2 others in the yard at Port Clinton, one of which theyre planning to restore to match the 2 from NS.

a track inspection in that video, but did cut out 10 minutes of
footage when I edited that one, but still some track inspection
stuff will be coming. You know me, I can't help myself..... Did
a car inspection on the coaches at Cass, but decided not to
show that either :-) .... they only had 1 small flat spot on 1 wheel.....

Love that EMD throb Dave! Here down under in Victoria, Australia, they took an F unit, mounted it on co co bogies and had a streamliner cab at each end! Lovely journey and scenery, thank you for the ride. 🙂

It's from the Parks Hwy, not a train but that "90 feet in the air" remark and accompanying scene at the 12:20-mark reminds me of the Hurricane Gulch bridge in Interior Alaska. LOL! Since that bridge also has a windsock on a pole (with about 2/3 of it missing seeing as the wind ripped it to shreds), it makes perfect sense why it's named "Hurricane Gulch". It crosses the river which is WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY down there. Hehe!
The rest of that video reminded me of how it looks in the center parts of the state of Idaho.

@@ccrx6700 Ive thought about it, we have one in Downtown 'old town' Sacramento (a beautiful musuem if youre ever out here).. my problem when I worked I liked traveling @ 70 mph... going 10 mph mite be a little tough for me... I go to the Illinois RR museum (Union IL) often as I have family out there and they ask if I want to be up in the engine... I usually turn them down and like riding in the last pass car instead.... if you're ever in the Chicago area it's an awesome museum.... they have so much equipment.... stay safe Dave....

@@ccrx6700 You know what Ive wanted to do is work on sum of the MOW equipment you run... there is a nice Museum in Sunol, CA (Niles Canyon) in the Bay Area and they run on the old SP.... but Ive wanted to learn how to run sum of their track equipment... Notice the barrel water tank ahead of the fuel tank in the WM (ex-CP) unit; this is an FP7A.
And since the boiler was replaced by HEP, you see the red receptacle on the blind end in Dave's video. The FP7A is a little longer than an F-7A ( 4.5 feet ). Largest operators of the FP7 were the the former CSXT companies, Atlantic Coast Line (44 )/Clinchfield (1 ) / C&O ( 23 ( 16 A, 7 B ) )/L&N ( 45 ) for a total of 113 of them.
Very good observation CentralFan1976. I'm not that familiar
with those, but are wondering if they were in place to feed a
steam generator for heating coach cars? I do know many
later EMD's did have an option available for a steam
generator on their locos for heating purposes. Thanks for

@@ccrx6700 Steam generators were dual purpose. In the winter, they heated the cars. In the summer, those same boilers could be used to cool those cars. It depended on whether the car had ice/mechanical/steam jet cooling.
Those F units sound great. You can see how they influenced the design of our early diesel electric type 3 ( Class 37 ) and type 4 (Class 40) and the truck design was also copied on some of our other early locomotives. They should of used the horn baffle thats a good idea. In winter snow they do not work well. I guess the newer locos you have are not affected with the horns on top of the engine where they will be warmer. Really beautiful scenery and the high bridge view along the river was real nice. How fast can your lines like this run. Over here the ones like this are only allowed up to 25mph.

You would like the ride on the Conway Scenic Railway to Crawford Notch & Fabyan’s Station where I live in North Conway, NH. Fantastic track up the side of the valley, especially across Frankenstein Trestle.

Cool. I've never heard of that ride before! I mean, I know the Durbin ride with the Heisler and the cabooses you can rent and have dropped off for a night or weekend camping but had never heard of this ride. I had heard a couple years ago something about them reopening the line from Durbin all the way through to Cass but haven't heard anything about that since.
They were telling me about opening that line Rebel9668 when I
visited there. Someone wrote in a bridge needed replaced and
they were supposed to do it this winter, we shall see. We will
go back and ride Durbin Rocket when they get that line
done. Really appreciate your tuning in and watching the

Sadly the wife and I did not book in time to go to Cass last month. I've been to Cass before, but I think we might take the New Tygart Flyer this summer when we go to Pittsburgh!
For what it's worth after spending a full week in Wheeling I think I've finally got the area to rub off on my lovely wife. The area is so pretty, and I think she fell in love with the mountains in the southern part of the state. Can't blame her since they sure are pretty.
I've heard the Cass tickets sell out quick for the fall excursions,
I can see why. it has to be totally gorgeous there when the leaves
are turning. You may also want to consider riding Western Maryland
Scenic, there will be a couple of videos of our ride out soon on
that one. it's a pretty cool ride too. But not telling you what to
do, just a suggestion. Wheeling has some pretty good rail fanning
around if your into that. Very much appreciate your joining us

That is a classic look for the locomotive. The rear view mirrors looked out of place.

It's not deleted, that's the old cable type fuel cutoff where you lift the cover and pull the cord.
I had the surgery, am in nursing care facility great folks here. My guess I’ll be here about 150 days or less. My goal is be able to walk out no limp no pain.😂

Let alone help me get out of bed. As it is it takes to big ladies to help me out of bed. Takes one who knows what she is doing to get me back on my bed. I’ve lost 15 pounds since the 2 November. I’m down to 204. Now am half sitting drinking a cup of green tea.

EFCO, Emergency Fuel Cutoff. The old ones were a break glass type switch. The glass held the switch closed, you broke the glass to shut down the fuel.

Thanks Bill, never heard it called EFCO but I can see why. On our
locos we have the red button. Thankfully I've only had to use
it once as I gave track clearance for a hi rail truck to get on and
a train operator working the remote disobeyed me and started
to run his train towards the crossing. Always a pleasure to have
