Much better on the a1II. In addition to the 4-axis tilting flipping, it's also slightly larger (3.2" vs 3"), higher resolution, and brighter. EVF is the same, but I really liked the original A1 EVF already
I asked someone about this with an A1 mark 2 and they said yes, 30 frames is only compressed lossy just like mark 1. So if your normal setting is Compressed Lossless at 20 fps like a lot of people, then you hit the speed boost for 30 fps, it drops it to compressed lossy to get to that 30 fps target. Sadly this is something I expected to be an "upgrade" for from the A1 mark 1. If we weren't going to get a fps increase, then I was expecting the quality at higher fps levels to be at least lossless compressed.
@ thank you for the answer, as a a1ii myself, I was not sure it really hits 30fps as the file type afterwards in the playback menu still shows lossless. I’ve read some articles about the a1 and that the sensor would actually support 44fps uncompressed, and also the processing grunt would be there. If we assume uncompressed raws from a9iii are 40-50mb x120 = 4800mb/s- 6000mb/s the sony a1 is 100mb*30=3’000 MB/s. So it’s surely a software limit and probably not hardware related.
Great video! Question: Can you use the personal uploaded LUTs in photo mode (similar to the S9)? I heard you may be able to by saving them into one of four new picture profiles and then accessing while taking photos....
I have literally never seen any shooter out in the wild who used a stock Sony eyepiece. That stock 8mm one is a joke! Everyone has that huge Hoodman one or the $14 soft silicone 20mm one from Amazon, which is longer and cheaper than this new Sony 14mm one as well. Also anyone who stands outside with a Sony camera for an hour in the rain will see why a lot of people have Nikon BS-3 Hot Shoe covers! That stock Sony hot shoe cover is another huge joke. It's like they never tested these cameras in sunlight or in rain. Simple easy things that they can fix but just don't.
I feel Sony is very stingy about only putting their best mechanical shutter on the A1 series. It is so much better than my A7R V. The shutter is very well dampened with a soft click sound that it makes me feel happy just hearing it. Not to mention the faster flash sync capabilities.
Agreed, the A1 series has a much better mechanical shutter. I'm personally fine with the flagship having the best though, so doesnt really bother me as much.
My understanding is the a1 & a1ii don’t have a full mechanical shutter, just efcs. I’d be happy if I was wrong, but I was told that the a7rv has a full mechanical shutter.
the A1 and A1 ii use solenoid motors for the focal plane shutter, while other E mount cameras use servos. Something i also realized is that A7C series also use a single shutter curtain of the A1 (shushed by the e shutter fake click) Sony is also stingy on capping out cameras at 10fps mechanical AND electronic. Like, the A1 system could perfectly do 12fps mech, and the A7IV could do 15. They also do other questionable things like making side tilting screens instead of fully rotating gimbals like on SLT cameras, removing the top right screen that helps you see your parameters without having to use the main screen and drain all the battery and lose the moment or restricting the A6000 bodies to 1/4000, or having €5000+ cameras with "cutting edge speed transmission between sensor and evf" that still have to downgrade the resolution from full hd to vga which for A9iii and a1 ii is unacceptable while none of the canon and Nikon competitors do. The Z8 is so much better than A1 and A1 ii in both photo and video (3 ms readout vs 12 is A LOT) Sony could 100% give us the perfect cameras for each niche, but they simply refuse to.
I think the frustration with this A1 ii release is justified. Most of the features you covered could easily have been added via firmware. Many of these features are also found on cameras at much lower price points. Not being able to shoot 6k open gate is a big miss as is no 8k/60p. Battery charger and eyecup? C’mon it’s a $6,500 camera Kyle - if someone needs that stuff they can just buy it.
Great video, Kyle! I'm thinking I need to add this one to my kit, it's just too good
Cheers Scott! I’m definitely loving mine
This was such a great video. I’d love to know more about how you set up your entire camera! Do you have anything like that you can share?! 😊
Thanks! Definitely going to try out some of your short cuts. So far very happy with my upgrade to the M2.
How improved is the rear display quality? My biggest gripe with my A1 is how low resolution it is.
I bought one at launch. It is using the same panel as the my A7R V or A9 III. Great resolution, wide color gamut and high brightness.

@@kylemeshna I was hoping you *wouldn't* say that. Hey Siri, text wife "I need to spend like $3k upgrading the Sony I'm sorry please don't leave me"

do you know if the speedboost button overwrites the lossless and uncompressed settings to achieve 30fps?

@@akirarex I’ve found that the boost mode just goes to 20fps if you are in lossless. Either it is a bug with my unit or I’m missing something

1. imprint luts
2. dynamic active IS
3. custom focus zones
4. focus map
5. shot marks
6. NR mode
7. dual battery
8. 2 eye pieces
9. speed boost
10. custom mode again?
I really need that new eyepeice for my a7RV!
