  • Here is a "How to" on making compressed oxygen for a oxy torch. If you are using oxygen, hopefully you understand the risks involved and use the appropriate flashback protectors. Oil free is a must. I thoroughly cleaned the tanks that I repurposed. I have been successfully using this system for 10+years
    Here is the link to the wire hose clamp video

    I was partially relieved when you mentioned that your compressor is of the oil-free variety. Care must be taken that all components (fittings, hoses, tanks, etc.) that come in to contact with compressed O2 are cleaned for oxygen service. Failure to do so can be catastrophic!

    So about 2 years ago I wanted to start blowing glass so naturally I needed more of a torch than just a propane torch. I discovered oxygen and as I was learning about the fundamentals, I stumbled upon this video. I was amazed at how simple yet genius your whole set up was. Like you, I've always wanted to be self sufficient. Well today I finally picked up a free concentrator and I'm so stoked. You inspired me and I really appreciate it. Cheers

      Hey I'll just throw it out there if you are working with small pieces of glass MAPP pro gas is more than adequate. Especially, if you have fire bricks for insulating the heat but when I'm in a pinch and need to patch lab glass MAPP works just fine.

  • @SolarSeeker45

    You shouldn't use propane tanks unless you've unscrewed the valve and washed them out first. The scent they add to the gas is oil based and can pool in the bottom. It may not be a problem since it's VERY hard to get an ignition source inside of an air tight cylinder. Even still it's just bad practice to combine a fuel with a pure oxygen source in an air tight pressurized container.

    • @HomeDistiller
      @HomeDistiller 6 місяців тому

      I was going to say the same, you have to be careful that there's zero fuel contaminants.. Just get a old balloon gas bottle and an inline regulator, much easier

    If you can score a Homefill oxygen compressor you can refill high pressure cylinders. I use medical cylinders for light mobile LP cutting but currently transfill them from larger cylinders (oxygen is cheap enough commercially and I've two gas suppliers within 20 minutes). Homefill compressors are often used with the (ripoff priced) integral regulator medical cylinders which are not repairable but you can harvest their QD male if desired to connect to the compressor then buy a whip and proper fittings for your cylinder. I use a Tee so I can use an ordinary oxygen regulator to monitor pressures and dump the line after the cylinder is full. Pilots use "transfill whips" similarly.

    I was concerned about compressing the Oxygen until now, the diaphragm style compressor had not occurred to me until I saw your method. I have old oxy bottles thrown as they were out of service for full pressure, however still fine for a couple of hundred pounds or so.
    You have given me an idea however on how to make a piston type pump that is isolated from oil of any sort that will pump to much higher pressures.
    Thanks heaps for sharing this GOLD! John, Sralia mate.

I have never seen desiccant used in quite that way before; my background is in airbrushing, and I live in a very humid area, so a moisture trap has traditionally been sufficient for my use, since I haven’t actually been storing gasses. So, I have to ask if a moisture trap might work in a setup that’s similar to yours; and also, how do u maintain the desiccant that u use-does it just get emptied from its’ container and re-dried in an oven, like a person can do with silica gel?

    I hope you carefully cleaned off the propane tank from any gas, grease and paraffin decomposites inside? You probably also know that pure oxygen (esp. when compressed) tends to react very impressively with all oil, grease and alike stuff? You are lucke nothing bad happened so far. But - believe it or not - i have similar ideas :-) I guess oxygen at 5 or 10 bar is not as agressive as it is at 200 bar from industrial tanks. The regulators can suddenly explode when opening the valve because of slightest contaminiations with grease or just dust and debriss coming from inside wear! It is rare but such incidents have been reported esp. from aluminium regulators. So take care!

    • @AtlasReburdened
      @AtlasReburdened 4 роки тому

      It's not really a problem so long as you don't just throw the valve open. You can cause that kind of explosion with an argon tank if you screw it up just right.

      @@marceloovg1873 i use some solvents like petrol, benzine e.g. and a vacuum pump. Let the solvents rest for some days and turn the tank every now and again, also apply some heat gently. Let the solvent drop out - use some pressure to get all out (turn the tank). Then evacuate the tank and apply heat gently. Let it on high vacuum for some days. You can be sure that you have 99.9 % of all solvable debris out of the tank.

    Is the on/off switch like a bi-stable vibrator circuit so when the switch to start compressing is activated, allows power to flow to the compressor, compressing the oxygen into the tank, deflating the bag eventually hitting the off switch, and cutting power to the compressor side of the bi-stable?
    Otherwise, the compressor would kick on, compress some oxygen, deflate the bag just enough to unpress the switch, and rapidly repeat itself.
    I guess im just interested in the electical side of how you turn the compressor on and off. Kinda wrote a lot there and I hope it made sense.

    PETER: QUESTIONS: I have little experience, unfortunately, so I apologize. 1. I heard somewhere that air compressors are often 'leaky', compressing some (of course) but otherwise losing something like 30% of the air one tries to compress. Is this the case, or was I misinterpreting what I thought was going on? Is it 30% backflow and therefore inefficiency, not leaks proper? If it does leak said gas, does it matter for these purposes since it's just oxygen into the air from whence it came - just a little wasted energy, nothing more? 2. When I look at compressors they always seem to have a large open grill, but you seem to have hooked up tubes. If I remove the grill part, will there be a port where one can hook in a tube (and is that how you did it)?

      Clayton Revie I purchased a develbise 5l/m oxy con unit for $100 used on craigslist. I have been happy with its performance when added to my oxy fuel torch, but need higher pressures and a store of oxygen for cutting. I had thought about running my oxy con output through to a compressor inlet, but doing so would damage my unit as a compressor would suck air through the oxy con's molecular sieves. Now I know how to overcome that problem. Hopefully you too can find yourself a used an inexpensive oxy con unit.

    There is some risk here. The risk is not compressing oxygen or some minimal propane let in the tank. Compressed gasses are safe if used properly. The risk is oil leaking out from the compressor. If you happen to get the correct ratio of oxygen to oil vapor....badness. That is probably unlikely but it is possible. I am wondering if there is a safer type of compressor to try this.

    what type of desiccant are you using for the air filter and that of which is inside the compressor? just straight silica gel, zinc?

    • @paliaspip
      @paliaspip  2 роки тому

      Just silica. There are definitely better desiccants, but it works fine.

    Clever bag system. Just a thought, putting oxygen in a propane cylinder, even if there is a tiny amount of propane left i.e 5%, would constitute a bomb.

    What did you do to connect the oxygen concentrator to the air compressor? I have a similar air compressor to you but it doesn't have any sort of air input, and I can't find any compressors that take an air input for a reasonable price.

  • @shaunsafety4175

    Is there any chance the compressor might create a spark and blow itself up? Might want to be on the other side of a block wall while the compressor is running just in case...

    So how you get the oxygen from the concentrator to the air compressor?? What kinda fittings you workin with??

    • @paliaspip
      @paliaspip  3 роки тому

      Mostly nitto style fittings

    Awesome idea, however:
    Tank and lines should all be lined with an oxygen barrier. Compressed oxygen in an unlined steel vessel will rapidly oxidize. Rapidly as in faster than with normal compressed air.
    Also if the temperature drops enough, you will have liquid oxygen droplets and those will pit steel very rapidly.
    Any bimetal contamination in your vessel and you run the risk of a thermite reaction. IE if the iron oxide in the tank meets aluminum or aluminum oxide.
    I would purchase a $300 oxygen bottle. If you are willing to shell out a "few hundred" for an oxygen concentrator, you can afford to buy an oxygen compressor (not just an oil free air compressor) and a proper tank.
    I've used both compressed o2 and liquid o2 in industry, and it's not something to take lightly.
    When proper storage and plumbing for use is considered, using oxygen is a safe ordeal. When using recycled goods, the potential for disaster increases exponentially.
    Without a safe compression and storage method, I personally would only use the concentration machine for brazing.
    Oxygen tank rentals and fills are not that expensive.

      Well done Travis, that is very valuable information, Thank you for putting the time and energy into your comment. I was thinking along the same lines as Mr Thomas-Hall.....but !....sometimes things ain't so simple. I really like how you didn't criticise the guy and empowered him with information, it will keep the 'experiment spirit' alive in the young lad. Cheers

      To avoid this I once tried using the machines in parallel, I have three the same. It looked a little crazy but seemed OK. Haven't gone far with that. The machines are of course very expensive, but they sometimes turn up in thrift stores and online. So basically my goal was to get two or three machines running and just plumb them together. I didn't realize at first that the machines have sensors, and low flow and high flow conditions set off alarms! SO, if you turn OFF the torch there's a lot of beeping. I guess the oxygen is just going around and around, you could just turn off the FUEL and let the oxygen run? It's not going to build up in the room. I have a few torches that have Air, Fuel, Oxygen inlets so that's what I'm generally hoping to do.

    • @travishanson166
      @travishanson166 4 роки тому +1

      @@leonardpearlman4017 having multiple machines would solve the storage issues. You could install a blow off valve that opens when you shut down the torch and closes when you start it up again. Just make sure it isn't venting near highly combustible materials.
      I would be in hog heaven if I had a setup that would run continuously as long as the fuel was present.

      @Leonard Pearlman Three in parallel would produce the volume my cutting torch specifies but not the pressure. Will probably jump on a home fill system if I see one at a reasonable price. Too many what-ifs using a standard compressor.
      Edit: Nope, I goofed.. My torch is specifying a flow that would require eight machines in parallel.

    • @paliaspip

      Oxygen needs a fuel source in order to react. The compressor is an oil free type. If there was oil, that would be big problem. Likewise with the cylinder, needs to be be completely free of oil
