The Queen studied Archaeology when she was young, and on some occasions simply popped up at digs or sites without warning :-)
She also studied Theology, speaks 5 languages, fluently, and is gifted in painting, embroidery and in designing Theatre and TV sets. Her eldest son, Crown Prince is also very clever . He has two Masters degrees in Political Science and Environmental Science, and is an expert in Green Issues and post fossil fuel generating of electricity . His wife Crown Princess Mary is also very clever , having obtained a Double First CLass Honours degree in Commerce and Law .All 3 of them are in the top 1% IQ wise. No wonder Frederik and Mary never stopped talking , and writing to each other after they met. It must have been a relief to have someone to talk to on their own level.
I'm pretty sure she got the nickname because the "daisy" flower is orinally named a "maguerit" Very close to Margaret or Margrethe.
The nickname "Daisy" comes from her grandmother on her mothers side. The english Princess Margaret, whom our queen is named after.
But Margarets nickname is for sure inspired by the flower. 😊
It was prince Henrik who started using the nickname, referring to the french meaning, which I don’t remember. Margrethe told that in a tv-interview.
Margrethe derives from the flower name marguerite (french), which in English is a daisy. Our queen was named after her maternal grandmother, the Swedish Princess Margaret who was born in Britain, and her nickname was Daisy within the royal family. Margaret died very young and therefore was very important to her daughter, Denmarks former Queen Ingrid. And when Margrethe was getting married, Ingrid gave her a very special brooch, studded with diamonds and in the shape of a daisy, that she inherited from her own mother. Margrethe wore this brooch on her wedding dress and she still wears it often.
@@BirgitteEngen it was borrowed at the wedding. The Queen was gifted the broch at a birthday. 60 if I remedier correctly
@@johannesnielsenjohnbates8889 no that is not right. It was the queens mother The late Queen Ingrid that nicknamed queen Margrethe Daisy. The name Margrethe means margueritte like the flower. The name of marguerittes in English is Daisy. So that's why. Lovely regards Nima.
I don't really follow the royals, but there's no denying the Danish Queen is pretty damn cool.
agreed
as an anti minarchy its hard ti admit, she is just about as good as they come.
She has made some mistakes. And yet she does just come clean and tells it like it is.
Thats a very good trait.
My Danish grandmother knit me several sweaters that the queen and her sisters had when they were little. The patterns were published in the paper because many Danes wanted their children to dress like the little princesses.
The heart on the coins means it is made at the mint in Copenhagen.
Older danish coins before 1812 made in Kongsberg (Norway) had a hammer,
If theer is a crown it is made in Altona (Schleswig / Germany) before 1864.
The little heart on the Danish coins is actually the very old symbol, coin mark, for Danish coins and is actually the leave of a water flower.
On some of our money we also haw the Danish heraldic Danish weapon a shield with three lions and nine hearts it’s called the small Danish weapon. Then there is the large on that is embroidered on the queen’s flag, the cote of arms, showing the figures of areas that combined gives Denmark. I.e. the polar bear for Greenland, the fish for the Faroe island and the cote of arms for the bloodlines of families of the royal family..
If you really want to know more about the royal family go to the homepage of Kongehuset.
Great tip! Thanks.
I´m born in Nuuk Greenland. The queen have a house there. In the late 80`s, when i was a little boy, me and my friend waited for her to get in her car. Just to wave at her, she waved back :-)
That is awesome. I don't know anything about Greenland. I wish I knew more.
The royal yacht actually belongs to the Danish Navy and is put at her disposal, and it is manned by the Navy; the captain of the ship being an actual ranking Captain in the Royal Danish Navy. Dannebrog actually has naval pennant number A 540
Yes, that is true, and it is used for training of conscript sailosrs.
And it is built to be fairly easily convertible to a hospital ship in case of war.
@@jrgenmadsen4163 I've heard a story from a guy who was signed to Dannebrog as a conscript decades ago. (It's what he told me 25 years ago, but I don't know if it's the actual truth.)
They were on their way to Greenland and had some rough seas. Most of the grew was inexperience and became terrible sea sick. But the queen had her sea legs, so she did what ever had to be done.
It is apparently quiet a thing to have the queen cleaning up your vomit and then make you a sandwich and serve it to you.
I Will never forget When she Said ": Where the hell is my furniture" to a interviewer 😂😂🙏 I love her
The late Prince Consort Henrik actually served 2 years in the French army. He fought in the Algerian war of independence for France. He has never publicly spoken about his experiences, which suggests he saw some shit.
Appelon, being a Prince, I seriously doubt he ever saw any shit at all! Doesn't matter it was war, I'm sure there were plenty of people responsible for his royal safety, so he himself most probable hadn't seen much.
@@ritabarcar he wasn’t a prince back then… Henri didn’t marry Princess Margrethe untill 1969.
Jeg er dansk. Ingen nytårsaften uden Dronningens tale! Umuligt! Men jeg har ikke boet i DK i 30 år og alligevel er der hver nytårsaften. kl 18, champagne og Dronningens Tale.
Prince Henrik wasn’t just a commoner though, he was the Count of Montpezat where they actually also have a castle called Château de Cayx which they stay at when they visit France 🙂
One of his ancestors was created a count by the king of France, on the condition that assembly of nobles of Bearn accepted him. They never did.
Yep. But france is a republic. No honers for nobals.
"Margot" ...!? No way. No one have ever never used that nickname, and it sounds awfull! Please use her nickname Daisy. And your wrong about why she is called so. Its actually a name of her favorite flower. In danish "margueritte" wich also is the danish national flower.
She disigned her monogram herself - and she designed Frederik's monogram too.
You should check out her father .. he was also very cool and loved by the danes :)
The hearts on the back side of Danish coins are the same you find in Danish coat of arms or the more traditional coat of arms of the Queen. That they are there relates to a victory by king "Valdemar Atterdag" in the year 1361 where he conquered the Swedish island Gotland.
Funfact, the crown prince has actually gone through the Danish elite force training and has been in the frogman corp
Ask Margrethe ll anything about Royal castles and she can answer. She also knows a lot about history in more detail than the avarage person
I think its cool how she has the love of the danes. She is like distant family that we care about and she is like a "mother" that will support but also gives us things to think about, if she thinks some things are not right. She will let us know through the New Years Eve speech.
And yes she is down to earth but don't cross the line by getting to close, she IS still the Queen, so don't go to her and say: Hi Margrethe. She will correct you and get you in line!!!!! 😉
About 2. World war: I remember Margrethe telling a story of how she, one night as a very small child, was woken up In the middle of the night, and had to flee through tunnels, I think 🤔 Because there was a real threat, that the Germans would try to kill the royal family.
That's kinda crazy too! 😳
Americans also call Margarets "Maggie," but that just does not fit the Queen at all ... too casual, folksy, informal. She is a treasure. She holds her country and its people in such high regard and that is mirrored back to her it seems to me ... from my US perspective. 💚💛🧡 I have great admiration for her.
Meg and Peggy also are nicknames for Margaret.
Agree
It is VERY disrespectful to call the Queen a nickname. It's really NO GO....
Yeah, not suggesting it at all. "Your majesty" I think is correct, but doubt I would presume to speak to her. Again, I hold great respect for Queen Elizabeth.
I love your channel ❤️.
Awww..thank you! :)
Prins Henrik was a french count. Henri de Montpessat. 😊 You are quite right : all of the european royal families are related in many ways. Christian d. 9. (1818 - 1906) Was called “the father in law of Europe” as his 6 children married into several royal families, including the family of the russian zar. Anastasias mother was a danish princess. 👸🤴
*Grandmother
There is no such thing as the french court. France is a Republic.
For many years now he queen has taken great care not to smoke in public, to not be a bad example.
Well she is her father's daughter. he was a sailor, tattoos and all. and liked to go to the pub. a real man of the people. I must say that i'm not thrilled about all that royalty stuff. But that said, we have been very lucky here in Denmark. And i think that Frederik will continue the man of the people thing.
Queen Margrethe was not born to be our queen. It wasn't possible untill 1953, when the Constitution was changed.
And all Danish monarchs have mottos 😊
The Dannebrog is also used when the Queen or the royal family go to the Faroe Islands or Greenland.
Rosenborg is a museum 😊
Queen Elizabeth wasn't born to be Queen either.
Margrethe IS royalty all the way... a journalist dared adressing her "du" a few years ago.... That did NOT end well :-)
She is approachable, but there are limits to that :-)
I have met and spoken briefly to her. She did not mind me calling her “du”.
So I’m not sure you are right.
Interesting… what does du mean?
@@adacox "du" is the informal version of you, correct (formal) would be "De (pronounced DI)".
It used to exist in english as well: “You” is the formal version of English pronoun honorifics. “Thou” was the informal version. When “thou” dropped off from normal usage in the 17th Century, it was retained in archaic and more formal texts.
These days almost no-one uses "de" in Denmark 🙂
The “M” is a monogram 😉
Although I’m danish, I have never seen our queen’s jewelry, but I have seen the jewelry of the British queen in London 😊
In relations to Magrethe paving the way in the military, Frederik has been in the special forces :)
Commentator Just ike the British royals HM included, have all been in the military,it is normal for them our Queen can strip an engine down & put it back together again, she also stayed in London during the war with her parents and sister, & like Q Margarethe, has many castles & homes around the UK,& abroad, she has a great sense of humour, is very gracious, loving & kind, as an American, you really Don't understand about royals, & how they work, may I suggest you do a great deal of research before you make another video. & just speak normal you are gushing, like an excited child(remember we've lived with royalty for hundreds of years, we are used to it, & don't get as excited as you are being new to it,) I'm not trying to disrespect you, but, it is off-putting a bit, most if not all European royals are connected in some way, and have houses, castles, yachts etc, QEII, has a royal train as well as ships, horses and so on, as you will find out during your research, good luck with that, I think you would beccome very confused with it all, at first, as it is a vast subject am very interested in this subject, &, look forward to hearing more from you, did you know we had a black Queen Consort on the throne married to George III, she was Queen Victoria's grandmother , best wishes, Amen!
@@patriciadavis2506 Yup. It's expected of the monarch or the future monarch here in Denmark to have some form of military education, due to the fact they are officially the supreme commander of the armed forces. I can only assume the same is true in the UK. So, it's not unusual both Queen Margrethe and Queen Elizabeth served in some capacity.
Yes, pretty much all European noble houses and royal families are related one way or the other. I believe Queen Elizabeth and Queen Margrethe are second cousins?? I'm not entirely sure, but they are definitely related as some level of cousins and if we go even further back in history they have even more blood ties. In fact while the Danish constitution only acknowledges the current immediate relatives to Queen Margrethe as potential heirs to the throne, the British still follow the old hereditary rules; so basically there are hundreds of people around Europe in line for the British throne. Including members of the Danish royal family.
Not only that but the graduation/recruitment rate for the frømand ( special unit for arctic warfare and hostage resque)
is only averaging about 4 - 6% of people who enlist.
Frederik never took the special services course. The official websites have FAQ’s answering these myth’s.
He is not a member of the special services. Never was.
The greenland sirius patrol myth is also longlasting. It was a private trip. They also have an FAQ about that.
The Danish royal house is one of the oldest royal houses in the world
Her motto is:
Guds hjælp, folkets kærlighed, Danmarks styrke🇩🇰
she is my favorite monarch 💕
Aww! That was so wholesome, as always Kelly! I'm a big fan of my Queen - despite the fact that some would argue that it's inconsistent with my political views. Guess that's typically Danish 🤔 Well, but it's tradition! 😂
Ha ha ha, me too!
totally misread the title. thought it said "was the coolest Queen" and I though oh no she passed away.....She is such an awesome person.
Queen Margrethe became queen the same year of my birth 1972. So she’s been on the throne 50 years, next year.
You can see the royal family as super ambassadors.
Queen Margrethe and Dannebro visited Washington in 1976 to celebrate the 200 years of US independent
She has a British accent when she speaks English, she also speaks French, Swedish and German
Crown Prince Frederik was in the special forces. It could be equivalent to a navy seal. He had a nickname” pingu”
Pingo... not Pingu 😄
Margrethe wasn't born in line for the crown in 1940. That was first an issue when they changed the constitution in 1952. Until then arveprins Knud and his son (Ingolf) was in line for the succession. We have changed the appearance of the currency quite a few times now, even during her time.
The daisy flower's Danish name is marguerite.... could that be it?
It is! 😄
Almost. The Danish Queen is named after her great grandmother called Margaret. She was crown princess of Sweden, but born as princess of Connaught in Great Britain. In the UK people of the name Margaret is often called Daisy (the flower is called Marguerite Daisy).
So even though Queen Ingrid decided to call her daughter Margrethe according to Danish spelling tradition, the cute nickname just found its way to her as well.
Margarita is old greek for Pearls; the flower got its name because it looks lig a string of pearls. So yes, that's why she is called Daisy. But dont you try to call her that!
@@jakobraahauge7299 Yes, the name comes from the flower. The name of the flower in turn comes from Greek margeron, which means pearl or pearly white. So does the word margarine.
the jewelry at Rosenborg Castle is not the Queen's. they belong to the Danish state. The queen and other royals must ask for permission to borrow them. The queen also has a private collection of jewelery which is not exhibited at Rosenborg Castle
You should also talk about Crown Prince Frederik and his family. He's so similar with Margrethe. Down to Earth
Hi Kelly..The word you were loking for is ..Monogram...Love to se how you see Danmark and the people...Love from Henning (Fyn)
Regarding her military acumen, she is bizarrely also quite high-ranking in the UK military, being the Colonel-in-Chief of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment, one of the major infantry regiments in their army. (Mind you, it's purely an honorific title. I can't see her going into battle for the UK any day soon.)
17:01: It's not a boat. It is the Royal Ship.
Best thing about daisy, she went to the last show of famous male actor, who drag dressed up as her and completely overdreseed and spoke like her.
We Danes loved his acting and it turned out she also thought it was the funniest thing.
Interesting facts I must say..I wish to visit denmark some day
I'm sure you would love it!
Hia Kelly - I wanted to let you know that i was born in 1980 and i remember coins with Frederik the 9th on them - so even though the coins/bills change when Frederik the 10th is crowned, my guess is that in a few decades after, we will still be able to see/find some coins/bills from her time as our ruler =)
You said that she is "down to earth". I'm the lowest of the lowest - a mentaly ill alcoholic. But MY Queen answers me when I send her an e-mail. You should try it. Tell her what you feel about being a guest in HER Kingdom or just say thank you for her ongoing hospitality. If that is not enough, she holds open audiences to commoners like us once a month. Wouldn't it be awesom to have actually spoken to her - 1 on 1 - on this youtube channel? I promise you. She'll listen. She is OUR Queen of Hearts
All danish coins minted since 1820 have this small ❤️
It indicates that the coin is minted i Copenhagen
in the 70s or 80s she would show up in the super market, wearing normal clothes, and do her shopping, and people would treat her like a normal person in the mall.
That is so cool. More reasons to like her! :)
The Danish Royal Family still remembers that they are human, like the rest of us :D
I like that about them!
the hearts on the coins are not particular to queen Margrethe II, but a part of the Danish realms coat of arms. Three lions and nine hearts."Løverne stærke i hjerternes milde hegn"
Queen Margrethe II is the "colonel-in-chief" of the Princess of Wales' Royal Regiment, which consists of 2,200 soldiers. That is, a kind of "honorary colonel", ceremonial head or patron.
Margaretha is also cousin to the King of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf. Her mother, Ingrid,
was daughter to Gustav VI Adolf and Margaret " Daisy " of Connaught. Ingrid was also
sister to Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, whom was killed in airplane crash in 1947 .
The Queens New Year speech is aired live, as the only one in the world.
The queen Margrete is truly a queen of the people ❤️
I'm pretty sure that Tolkien was inspired by Denmark and received illustrations for the Lord of the Rings from the Queen. He seemed to like them, even though he wasn't a big fan of illustrated books, so after his death, a Danish publishing house ended up making an edition illustrated by the Queen
I heard some story, that, she wrote Tolkien, because she was a big fan of lord of the rings, and that they maybe wrote each others or actually met 🤔 So I think you are definatly right!
It's called a Monogram, the thing with the initials ;) and Margrethe, who is an artist and designer as you mentioned, played an active role in making it, and the coins. The royal flag, which is the Danish flag Dannebrog with her monogram on it, will fly at the castle she is currently residing in. So you can tell by the flag flown if she's in or not ;)
Girl: do you know Denmark has a Queen
Me: yes im from Denmark
I would much rather have a Queen who has dedicated her life to the people, been an incredible example of academic and artistic achievement, than the Kardashians.....
I actually has a coin (10 kr) with crownprince Frederick on it. It was produced from when he turned 18 in 1986.
I dont know if its still here on YT.. but try watching "kongehuset indefra".. a danish documentary on the royal family. Its made by Anders Agger - great at documentaries.. but it made with the help from the royal family.
She made and designed at tapestry with a Luther Rose for the 500 year of Martin Luther and gave it to the church of Luther in Weimar to be used as an alter cloth.
I have to correct you a bit. Prince Henrik was actually a french count, not just a regular guy 😉
True. But he wasn't a prince or a king...I guess that was my thoughts. :)
Do the Crown Prince and Princess next please, they're even cooler :D
Now when Queen Elizabeth has died - our Queen is the longest reigning monark in the world (50 years).
:-)) Love
The queens son - the crown prince - is a special force soldier - Frømand (frogman).
All kings and queen has mottos and monograms.
1:44: Well.. let me tell you this..:
The Kennedys were the closest, almost similar, that you guys had, that was honored as much here in Denmark! And also in Greenland!
Both Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Margrathe II are Great Great Granddaughters of King Christian IX of Denmark
You should do a video on Prince Frederik too. He's very liked by Danes, just like his mother. He has a very interesting and down-to-earth history too. His former special navy forces buddies calls him "Pingu" because he looked like a penguin in the diving suit. Also, when he met his wife Mary, they talked for some time in a bar, and she didn't know he was a royal before a local Australian came up to her and asked: "Do you know who you are talking to!?".
I plan on doing more videos about Danish royals! :)
I thank you for the video, very nice, you should try to go on DR's archives online, and see the broadcast from the day she was pronounce Queen, it was maybe 15-20 minutes after her father passed away, and crown prince Frederik will have to do the same, because my beloved Queen will not retire, she will do as her father
Couldn't catch it at 8am Danish time.
Queen Margrethe II wasn’t born to inherit the throne as only males could. As her parents only had daughters, king Frederik 9th Younger brother, Knud, was to inherit the throne, but nobody wanted that. They therefore changed the constitution in 1958, when Margethe became 18 years old, and permitted females to inherit the throne IF there’s no sons.
Our norwegian kings granddad was the danish prince Carl, in 1905 after we became independent from swedish rule, we wanted a monarchy and to that we needed a king. So there was 2 choises ... a prince from the swedes (and I belive it was asked but they refused), or a prince from Denmark, now ... I am pretty sure we really really wanted a prince from Denmark but we had to ask :-P
But before Prince Carl would take the job as King in Norway he wanted to know if the norwegian people wanted this, so ... they voted, and he became King Haakon 7th of Norway and an elected king !!!!
He took the motto "All for Norway", wich his son (who also changed name to become King Olav 5th) also took the same Motto, and now our King Harald 5th have taken the same Motto.
So our royal family is related to the Danish, swedish and british royal family.
British Prince Philip was born as Prince of Greece and Prince of Denmark. And He also have his decent from the danish King Christian IX 😀😀
Queen Elizabeth is also a decent from Christian IX 😁
@@mrosenoern does that mean, they are cousins? Boy, Giuliani really did get the shaft...
Well isn't that "Europe's grandfather"?
He had a lot of daughters that was married off to European (crown?) princes. So almost all European royalty are some kind of cousins 😆
@@AshtonishingJelly
And a son who became king of Greece, and a grandson who became king of Norway.
I saw a comparison between the late Queen Elizabeth and Margrethe, both watching National sports! I hardly have to mention who was the most stiff?
The Queen don't own all the castles-there are 18 in total, the state owns 17-8 of them the Queen can use, she dosen't even own the crown jewels, the state owns them , The Queen does have some private jewels and Marselisborg is her private castle
The ❤ on the coins dear, they are part of the danish coat of arms.( Lions and hearts, and the coat of arms goes way back to early mideval times)
Fun video...The British Royals would sometimes refer to the Danish Royals as BICYCLE ROYALTY...Nore CASUAL than the Brits...
They change is, she doen't smoke in public anymore. Gave in to the pressure, which is fair enough, I think.
When Margaret was born she wasn't Heir Apparent or even Heir Presumptive. It was male only so it was going to go to her Uncle but they changed the law around her 12 birthday.
the next king of denmark (the queen's son) is actually half french
I guess I didn't think of that. Interesting.
It's called a crest...the design, you were discussing.
That sounds about right! :)
Magrethe was not heir to the trone, when she was born. Women could not become rulers of Denmark until the change of our constitution in 1953. She was "elected" by the referendum about the new constitution. One sister Benedikte did not marry into royalty, but a german noble.
Also Margrethes father was not krown king before 1947.
Right. Actually I don’t know if danish law to this day allow the first born being in line to the throne... In Sweden the princess is the heir to the throne even though she has a younger brother. That was not the issue when Margrethe was in line, as she had only sisters. And the change in constitution kind of only alloved her to “power” not nescesarily to female royalties in the future. But I love the queen and the princes and their families. Denmark is a monarchy by history. And we kind of love it 🤗
@@brianrsnes7875 The issue was that the constitution before the 1953 one from 1915 gave women the right to wote, but demanded a 45% yes from all ellegible voters to change the constiturion. There was a great wish to abolish the 1. chamber (Landstinget) but this proposal fell in 1939 because to few voted. So to make Magrethe heir was also a "bait" to convince more people to vote - and at the same time lower the percentage in the new constirution to "just" 40%. Still the change only just squeesed through by at surplus of 20.000 votes!
Not so many years ago that part specific part of the constitution was changed again, so now the first born is heir, period, like in Sweden. Not a big deal, since Christian was firstborn anyway.
Kunne i forstille jer Ingolf som konge ???
But did the 53 ajustment to the danish constitution make any actual change, other than exclude Ingolf from the throne? Margrethe’s firstborn is male and so is crownprince Frederick’s. So the male line won’t be challenged for close to a hundred years. But what is actually the law?
the hearts on the coin, comes from the Danish Coat of Arms.
as the for the royals, the future king is what I would call a certified bad ass.
Margrethe is named after her maternal grandmother, who's nickname also was Daisy.
King Christian IX is my favy
Danish royal...The Father-In-Law of Europe...and his daughter DAGMAR...later renamed Maria Feodorevna...Mother of Czar Nicholas of Russia...!
She paved the way for CP Mary, who is a Captain in something or nothing or other.
Is Mary's title just because she's a princess or it is because she actually did something?
Crown Princess Mary participated in the training for officer in the Home Guard and today has the rank of Captain
Kelly you forgot the BEST FACT of them all ..... As a Danish Citizen you can always request a audience with our Queen, and she will grant it to us all, ofcourse the reason got to be valid. You will always meet her private, so every1 gets the same welcome and meeting.
Im pretty sure that not alot of Danes even know that.
Wow. Cool!
She did not know Margrethe would be queen at the time of her birth. That was decided in 1953.
She married a diplomat, her next sibling married a Prince, her youngest sibling married a King 😂
👍🏻💜
Johnny Margrethe as some people jokingly call her ;)
Maybe I just surround myself with people who aren't big fans..
Lmao did you read up on how the danish king was during the war? He insulted Hitler that congratulated him in a telegram in regards to the kings birthday
Most USA Southern women know all about all the Kings and Queens-- it seems to be a hobby down here, discussing them all while sitting on the porch drinking iced tea. :)
That is so funny! :)
she did merry a count and diplomat
If you look at our Coat Of Arms, it also have hearts.
