Fun Fact: This game doesn't use actual instruments for its soundtrack. Yasumasa Kitagawa (the primary composer for the duology) revealed in a blog that he used Cubase (a DAW/music software notably used by Hans Zimmer) for the soundtrack. However, a few elements were still recorded live, like the tap dancing in "Partners - The game is afoot!" and the amazing violin in Herlock's depressing attempt at playing his "Stradivarius."
It is so fucking unfair that this game doesn't get the attention it deserves, it is genuinely the best game in the franchise and still people haven't played it. The story, characters, cases, soundtrack, every-fucking-thing is so beautifully done, from start to finish (ok it has its ups and downs but there wasn't a single case a didn't like maybe the second one in the first game because there's no trial) and my GOD IT DESERVES SO MUCH MORE ATTENTION THAN IT GETS. Also Sholmes is the best character in the franchise.
Totally agree. Aside from the second chapter being one looooooong investigative segments and one major case splitting into two chapters at the end, the game is pretty much nigh perfect with 3 of the cases ranking among the best in series (3rd, 8th, and 9th+10th). It helped that the writings and themes aren't afraid of truly delving into so many shades of grey and that no one walked out of the story without any sort of consequences, making for really impactful narrative comparing to what other games in series have tried.
I agree. After finishing the original trilogy I thought there was no way any other AA game would surpass them for me. I enjoyed Investigations and Apollo Justice but they just didn't hit the same. But when I got to TGAA oh my god I finally got that same feeling I got when I played the original trilogy and by the end of TGAA2 I realised I'd actually enjoyed it even more than the original trilogy.
I love you appreciation for the smaller details. The use of the models, artstyle, environment, and all that makes it such an immersive experience. It all flows into itself beautifully.
Thanks for making this mate. As you say, TGAA is not explored as much at the moment as the original trilogy. Hopefully that will change in the future. It's clear you have a passion for this series, and hopefully through making this review more people will find this gem of a game. Now I'm off to make some ice coins out of soap :)
I've seen tgaa fans who got into it through all sorts of places, but mostly anime and ACD sherlock; I think the massive overlap highlights the universal charm you talk about. It has a loyal cult following but it's still really underrated and I get slightly impatient with mystery game fans who won't play tgaa because they couldn't get through AA1. that's like saying you won't try breath of the wild because you didn't like link's crossbow training.
The last part is very odd. Those two games play totally differently. GAA, while being fairly unique in the context of the series, still plays very similarly on a fundamental level to AA1
I am a really big can of all Sherlock media (books, movies, retellings etc etc) and Ace Attorney, so when I found out that there was a duology which was based on Sherlock Novels I just HAD to get into it Best. Decision. Ever. I don't think a single AA game will top the Great Ace Attorney Chronicles
Fun fact: Great Ace Attorney takes place in the 1890’s, since Sholmes mentions the Window tax being abolished 40 years ago, and the Great Exhibition being advertised as “the start of a new century.”
This game has been the only game (or any other artistic medium) which made me feel like I got pulled out of a separate world to the real one once it finished, and it also made me feel like I had a certain relationship with the characters, despite them only ever talking to each other. Guess it all stuck through osmosis, considering just how long this game takes to finish.
I'm so glad these games came into existence. During the run up to the english release to these games, i binged the AA5, AA6 and PL vs PW:AA in preparation to see how it stacked up to the rest of the series. I did not expect it to become my favourite collection in the series.
I played through these games with my dad who I only saw for a few hours a week so these games became a significant part of my life for a while I'm not over them ending I'm not over it they're SO DAMN GOOD I miss them so so so so SO much I adore the characters, setting, animation, music, mysteries, gameplay, EVERYTHING and every time I'm reminded of it I start losing my mind again
i didnt think anything could top the original trilogy when i finished it, but after playing the great ace attorney chronicles, i think it's an absolute masterpiece of a dualogy and the soundtrack for it was absolutely god tier. the pursuit soundtrack for this game is just absolutely amazing also.
:adachiTrue: this is such a good video man. i agreed with everything you said somehow, honestly the way you presented and explained all the information is ap lit quality essay. for a while i’ve barely talked about, read, or engaged in anything related to ace attorney. but the game (especially tgaa) is still so special to me, and honestly with the few chances i’ve gotten i’ve ranted about my love for it. thank you for doing justice the brilliance of tgaa, i’m confident this video will convince people to play it
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR TGAA that whole twist with klint being the professor, mikotoba being Sholmes partner, Iris being klint’s daughter, etc those plot twists still get to me Istg- the plot twists this game had were genuinely some of the best plot twists I’ve ever seen I loved them these games still get to me even after having finished it in November. AND DONT EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE MUSIC- those games were phenomenal I LOVED it. I loved it even more than the trilogy
I recently finished the game and I am so happy to see videos praising it! The game blew me away, just as the older AA games did too, but to a whole other level. Great video!
I think a reason that 3D works for Great ace attorney and not what I've seen from the later main games (havent played the Apollo trilogy) is that Phoenix and co and their movements were designed in a cartoon i.e. drawn way. When going to 3D, they wanted to still have the same poses to show "same character", but those movements now look really weird in 3D. Meanwhile in the Great Ace Attorney, movements are fluid and the expressions are more in line with what 3D can achieve
It’s kinda funny tho because the entire first game I actually didn’t like sholmes. He was just an annoying dunce. But by the end, I couldn’t help but laugh along to his crazy antics. Idk when that change happened but I’m really glad it did ^^
I did always wonder if Sholmes was messing with us and he finally admits it in the end. He always knew his deductions were wrong, he was training his new friends the art of deduction by making them clean his messes
I only recently played these games, got them last year and finished the first game and then half of the second one with only recently finishing Resolve. It’s a great duo with it being so awesome how every single case is connected to the other. There isn’t a single case of this game I can really forget which I can’t really say the same with the others. I only recently joined the fandom with going through all of the games after finally putting time into the originally trilogy which I got for my 3DS which lead me to get the rest of the series. GAA is definitely top notch and more people need to be taking a look at it and examining everything

I'm late to this but having finally played this, I can now confidently say, I want a prequel following Mikotoba and Sholmes in their first year's together
i never actually played aa until this game only ever heard of it and if the rest of the games are as good as this i need them yesterday because this one is one of my favorite games of all time
i just finished this game last night and god this game is amazing. i played through the phoenix wright trilogy before this and will do the apollo justice trilogy after it but i find it hard to see how any ace attorney i play after this can top resolve
I just got into the series with the final Capcom sale on 3DS. The first game grabbed me immediately. For some reason, I fully missed out on the series for over 20 years. I’m now in the process of buying them all.
Here to (hopefully) spread the word about this masterpiece. I can't believe I have slept on purchasing this game for nearly a year and a half. If you're considering this game, don't make the same mistake I have, play it ASAP!!! Here's hoping we get more of TGAA in the future.
