  • In this short video, I show off my finished bookmarks, and then walk through how I finished them. I used two methods, first with covering the back with extra aida, and second by stitching microsuede over the back. One is much better than the other! I give a brief demonstration of the aida-backing method (my preferred method.)
    Thanks for watching!

The “Fold Over Finish” is the PERFECT solution to my question of how to finish the back of the bookmarks I’m making for my brother and sister in law. Thank you so much!

Thank you so much for sharing these techniques, particularly the aida backing technique, which I am sure will be useful in the future not only for bookmarks but for coasters for my coffee table.

High Olivia! Just discovered you. so I made my first bookmark couple months ago and I took a thin sturdy cut it to size placed it on the back and then I had sewn another piece of Aida on the back over the plastic and it turned out great. I also frayed the edges and the bookmark is nice and stiff. Sturdy doesn’t bend because of the thin plastic. Just thought I’d write in and let you know my experience love the video. Oh, I’m gonna be 60 soon. I’ve been stitching since I was in seventh grade. 🙂

Hello! Thank you so much for watching and connecting with me; I love hearing that stitching has always been a part of your life. I hope to have the same story, too.
That’s a great idea for the bookmark! I just started a new bookmark pattern, so I’ll have to give that a try. Thanks for sharing!

@@LongLivTheStitcher oh your welcome and very cool with the new pattern. I will keep up with you. And always remember. Enjoy what you are doing. It’s not fun, and your creativeness gets stuck if you can’t enjoy it.
Oh and I was asked to do a stitching class with a small group at a small Spanish church I got to in San diago. I’m the only one that doesn’t speak Spanish hahaha. Never done this before so, I hope they enjoy it. 🙂

I would try some iron on fusible webbing with the ultrasuede which will stop it puckering...this might give you a neater result. A roller cutter and ruler will give you better cuts too :) love that you are sharing your "fails" too....a great learning for all.of us...

      Sorry for my slow reply!!
Thank you for those tips, I think you’re right. I’m putting a roller cutter on my Christmas list! And yes, I always have a lot of “fails” but I’ll share em all haha!

Thanks so much for giving us the opportunity to learn from your experiences. Love the doubled over Aida technique. The finished product is beautiful. If possible, could you bring your projects up a little closer to the camera? Many thanks!

I’m so glad you were able to finish the bookmarks for your. Co-workers. They turned out so very nice. I wish I was getting one! Good luck in your next adventure. My son is a lawyer, so I have respect for the profession.

Lovely Gifts. I have used felt for backing with my bookmarks. I do like the aida backing technique, will try that in the future. Stitching a bookmark now may try that once finished. Yes! The fraying is very therapeutic. 👍😃❤

I knew you would make it work. The next time you finish it’ll be even better. But remember they don’t know what it should look like so they’ll think it’s great. Bravo

Your encouragement is powerful - thank you! Yes, it’s always hardest to try a new finishing technique, and now, this isn’t new. I’m looking forward to my next bookmark finishes! Thank you for watching ❤

When you fold over the aida, you have 1 folded and 3 raw edges. How do you handle the edges? Im thinking complete the stitching that holds them together, then cut open the fold, trim as needed and fray?

Hey Olivia! I’m trying to understand when you folded it around the back and then you sewed it up to the side. Did you take a pair of scissors and cut all the way up to side after it was sewn and then freeze the edges?
I want to try sewing them as you did instead of gluing the back and I’m beginning to cute and my palms are sweating 🤣🤣🤣
