  • Our daughter Madison turned two 1 month before our cruise so we finally had the opportunity to try Camp Ocean Penguins.
Some background information: Amanda works from home and is with Madison 24/7. Madison has never been in daycare and has only ever been babysat by family for short time periods. She goes everywhere with us.
Going into our cruise, we knew that we wanted to introduce Madison to camp, give her the experience of playing with other children who aren't her cousins and also to give us some separation. Personally, we planned to only take advantage of Camp Ocean on sea days as we would be taking her off the ship on port days.
Prior to our cruise, we pre-registered Madison during the online check-in process 14 days before our cruise.
On Embarkation Day, we went to the open house and did the tour, met the staff and let her play with the toys. They also gave us a ship phone to hold onto throughout the cruise, for when we would drop her off and if they needed to get a hold of us.
During our cruise, we dropped her off on 2 different sea days.
Upon drop off, we said our goodbyes and the staff helped her wash her hands.
After the first drop-off, we were in tears, because it was truly the first time we were ever dropping her off anywhere.
Stay tuned to see how our first Camp Ocean experience went...
Some words of encouragement for first-time Camp Ocean parents:
If you are on the fence about trying Camp Ocean, we encourage you to try it.
If your child is like Madison and has never been in daycare, this is the perfect opportunity to introduce your child to playing with other children and not having you around.
We felt comfortable leaving Madison at Camp Ocean, because the staff is caring and friendly and we knew that it would be a growing experience for her and us, even if it was for a short time.
We truly enjoy our daughter's company so going through the Camp Ocean experience for us was more about self-growth and showing her that it’s ok to be without Mama (and Papito). The first drop-off was the hardest, Amanda held back many tears.
Bring tissue, if it's the first-time dropping off your child. Amanda definitely shed some tears.
Keep the ship phone on you after you drop off, just in case the staff need to get a hold of you.
    Happy Cruising!
    Justin, Amanda and Madison Barretto

This is why it’s so important to make sure your kids get socialization… It doesn’t have to be in daycare he could be with family or friends but they have to spend time outside of mommy and daddy

Definitely! Madison loves going to the park and playing with other kids, despite being home with Amanda all day. She really is a social butterfly and extrovert.

Unfortunately That means nothing lol my son is always with others family and his smaller cousins and he’s still just like this lol if you read up on toddlers per this age it’s common. My son didn’t get like this until toddler stage 2 years old. Just at 1 he would wave bye to us lol

This. Non family. My daughter is home with me all day as well. She’s been in dance and pageants since she was 18 months old. She’s 4 now and also does gymnastics and Mother’s Day our for a year. It is crucial they get that time with others, especially other children.

We agree with you that the socialization is important for a child’s development. Just because our daughter isn’t in childcare and is home with Amanda all day (because Amanda works from home), doesn’t mean she doesn’t get socialization. And not that we need to defend ourselves, but we go to the park daily and she’s in ballet and soccer. Madison is the type of child that will walk up to other children to play with them. She is a social butterfly without a doubt! She’s been on more vacations and has had more experiences than the average adult. We aren’t depriving our child of socialization. At the time of this video, she was 25 months and this was our experience. She had a hard time and so did we, but it did not make us feel like we aren’t doing enough as parents to get her socialized. We feel she will do better at Camp Ocean on our next cruise.

Madison did such a great job! Same for you Mom and Dad. The amount of time she spent is reasonable considering she hasn't been away. I would recommend for next time: (unsolicted advice!)the night owl the children are all mixed up so I would start her off there on the second night with a familiar child. Then send her and pick her up in 10 mins. drop her off again mid day for 15 mins. and continue to build up her time in 5 min increments.

We hauled our 3 year old daughter with us everywhere in 2022 on our cruise to Alaska, and she will be 4 this year when we sail for the Caribbean and we are considering camp ocean. Do they call you anytime your kid cries because he’s going to cry lol when I usually drop him off it depends on the day…sometimes he cries and doesn’t want me to leave other days he’s ready to play and doesn’t pay me any mind lol we’ve only cruised on Royal when he was like 9 months they didn’t call me at all. But obviously you also pay on RC. Planning on cruising for his second birthday! But trying to choose a ship we can both enjoy. Carnival Celebration or more expensive WOTS is what I’m debating.

They will know their ages, because you have to provide DOB when plugging in passenger names. There’s also some sea day morning times where parents can stay and play with under 2.
