  • On day 165 I ventured to the ruins of Persepolis, the ancient Persian capital built by Darius the Great in the late 6th century BC. It is about 70 kilometers north of Shiraz and can easily be reached by taxi.
Just like visitors in the past bringing tribute, I also paid an entrance ticket of 1 million Rial or around $2. Following ancient ambassadors, I entered by climbing a giant staircase that took me to the Gate of All Nations guarded by lamasu, buffalo-bodied creatures with human heads and sometimes with wings.
It is called the Gate of All Nations because in the past Persia was a massive empire that conquered various nations. The arrival of conquered nations is recorded in the form of reliefs on the walls of the Apadana (Palace) of Persepolis. In the reliefs, each nation wears its traditional costumes and brings tribute typical of its nation. Their hands being held by a Persian servant indicates that they were conquered nations.
Apart from Apadana, there are also other buildings such as Darius Palace, Xerxes Palace, Treasury, and many others. However, in Persepolis there is no residential area, so scholars think that this capital was a ceremonial capital, visited only during Norwuz or Persian New Year celebration.
This explains why the tombs of the kings were carved around Persepolis. For example, the tomb of Artaxerxes II is right behind Persepolis. Meanwhile, the tombs of previous kings are about 5 km to the west, in the complex now called Naqsh-e Rustam.
There are 4 tombs there, from east to west we have the tombs of Xerxes, Darius I, Artaxerxes and Darius II. All four are mentioned in the Bible.
Apart from the 4 tombs, there are also reliefs from the Sassanid era whose kings claimed to descend from the Achaemenid kings.
The most interesting Sassanid relief is of King Shapur defeating the Roman emperors Valerian and Phillip. In the year 260 the Roman army lost the war against Persia and the emperor Valerian was taken prisoner.
I didn't have time to go to Pasargadae to visit the grave of Cyrus (Koresh) because it was already late. I returned to Shiraz and planned to go around Shiraz tomorrow.

Kasihan baik di film 300 atau parodinya, Xerxes digambarkan sangat jelek. Sedangkan di sejarah, setidaknya sejarah Persia, dia digambarkan sebagai kaisar agung yang sangat hebat. Itulah film propaganda barat.

Thank you for your input. My mic was broken in Uzbekistan so I used the camera's mic, which is bad when used outdoor (when windy).
