Our experiences have so much overlap!
I'm Southside Chi born and raised. Always wanted to be a creative writer, but I first majored in computer science because I was fed the lie that STEM was the only educational investment worth making.
By my junior year, I was winning competitions and all, but was miserable. My scholarship permitted me to switch to Business - specifically Marketing, but it wasn't creatively-oriented like advertising is. We did a lot of pricing models and market research.
For Spring 2020, I studied and interned abroad in Tokyo through Temple University, where I met an art director at a random event and learned about advertising as an entire industry. When I got back home during COVID, I applied for MAIP. In MAIP, I interned at a San Francisco creative agency for media planning but wasn't sure about the industry. Almost immediately, I learned about the ONE School, a free portfolio program created by the Creative Director of Spotify for Black aspiring art directors and copywriters. I joined the ONE School to build my ad portfolio.
Now, I'm a junior copywriter for an earned media agency based in New York. ❤ Looking to further my career. Thanks SO much for sharing.
Thank you for sharing your story! And for those watching please do not be intimidated when you hear “specialized” high school etc. like she said it is not necessary to go to a special high school or “start at a young age” or whatever to get into the industry. I’m from brooklyn and Brooklyn Tech was your regular ole high school like any other. Fights, ghetto kids, drugs in the staircase, etc

Would u say it’s worth going to college ? I’ve heard both sides, but mostly that it isn’t worth it because GD is always changing
@@TheEliseRae i definitely think going to college is the best for networking purposes...but as far as technical goes i went to a two year community college and felt the education was on par with my friend's 4 year education🙂
