I love that you are your own person and not influenced by fads. You know what you like and what works for you and you just DO it. No apologies! Thank you for being a good example of a strong woman who thinks for herself. That quality can help a sewist to avoid confusion and indecision when choosing fabrics and patterns. (That goes for other things in life as well.)
There’s nothing worse than fads and trends and trying to follow them. I try to stay as far from them. I think my mum handed me the mindset of dressing like we like, no matter the trends :)
Thanks for sharing these beautiful fabrics. I felt bad that you had such migraine headaches and in general a rotten week. Enjoy sewing these , or not, maybe just looking for now!
So many exquisite fabrics you shared and I love them all💖 Your makes will be beautiful along with the wearable comfort provided! I'm so sorry you experience migraines! I'm right there with you, as well as one of our sons and daughter. Wishing you pain free days filled with sewing joy!
I am so sorry to hear that you haven't been well. Migraines are the absolute worst ever. (My husband suffers from them). Those are absolutely beautiful fabrics. I think they would make lovely summer dresses (I'm in Canada) and be a cheerful addition to any wardrobe.
My son also gets a migraine every now and then but unlike me, he can feel it’s coming and can usually lie down, take a specific pill and they don’t reach a peak level of pain.
Sorry to hear you weren't feeling well. Perhaps have your optometrist check the prescription on your new glasses as the wrong power can give you headaches. Love the designs on those fabrics!
Like Sue K I love the teal & pink. Now that my hair has turned white, I find different colours than before are more flattering. I had some Capri pants in Cotton Sateen that I wore to death and they were gorgeous.
I’m sorry you had a rough week, but glad you are feeling better. Wow! Lovely fabrics. I love stretch sateen. I made a Helen’s Closet York Pinafore for me and my daughter and the fabric pairs well with it. I love all your prints. I think we share the same color pallet. I like your Holyoke hack. It does look nice in sateen! 💐
Thanks for your advice Karina. I have some cotton sateen in my stash and had no idea what to do with it. Bought it on sale because I liked the colours but I am a learner sewist still trying to identify my style and attracted by all the pretty things. There is an a-line dress pattern in my collection which will be perfect I think. I have learned so much from you and love your videos. Your enthusiasm is infectious and you are so knowledgeable. Thanks for sharing and everything you do.🥰
So pretty! I have two floral sateens, one on a white base and one on black, that I meant to make Bermuda shorts with this summer. But then I got involved in other projects and forgot all about them lol. I get migraines too, and they are brutal. Hiding in my bed is really the only way to deal with them until they pass.
I am so sorry to hear about your migraine, I get them too but they never last 3 days! How horrendous! 😥 However, your fabrics are gorgeous and I totally understand why they cheer you up. Happy sewing, Karina 😊
Great volg!! I have some stretch sateen in my collection that I have been wondering what to do with. You gave me some good ideas even though our body types are very different. You always do such a good presentation.
I love the sound of this fabric. Such a nice swish! Sewing with sateen is so underrated and often overlooked as great for beginners. Thank you for sharing this! 💚✨ It's nice to have things to make us happy.
Sateen is woven with a "satin weave" that instead of a plain under-over weave, will leave multiple overs in a row, so the weave is much smoother & shinier, but actually a bit weaker.
Sorry to hear that you haven't been feeling well. Migraines are the worst. You might want to have your glasses rechecked. When I switch prescriptions and they aren't adjusted correctly I get instant headaches. Love your fabric! I've never sewen with cotton sateen. I look forward to seeing your makes!
I actually had the migraine before the new glasses 😬. It was gone before I picked up my glasses. I have a huge migraine every couple of menstrual cycles and they involve my whole face (cheeks, teeth… 😓). The glasses are a whole different thing. They feel better now after a few days. They are progressive and I went through the same thing the last time I got a new prescription :)
@@LiftingPinsandNeedles I started having migraines during my change. They have continued afterwards but i now have figured out some of my triggers not related to hormones- Gluten, alchohol, dehydration and stress. The first two bring on migraines within 6 hours of consuming. So i have learned to be very careful with my food. The hormonal migraines can't be controlled as easily. Hugs
Thank you Karina sharing your views on this type of fabric. I have a piece of cotton sateen I have had for a couple of years and didn’t know what to make with it , you have given me a few ideas. Maybe the Atenas jacket or The Tilly and the buttons Rosa shirt dress ?
Oh those fabrics are absolutely gorgeous and yes, that last one with the teal and pink... Oh my word, so beautiful. I have some pink cotton sateen that I'm considering for the Joy jacket from Chalk and Notch patterns, with the collar. I'm a bit concerned that it'll be a bit too structured, but I think I'll give it a go.
I love the Joy Jacket. With the collar, I’d cut it on the crossgrain so that there’s no stretch horizontally there. I would also skip interfacing or use the lightest one possible.
The worse was that the list of fabrics I was sent to choose from were not the best type at all. I have friends who got much better fabric choices and it’s like they had “tiers” of ambassadors and I was on a lower tier. Made it very underwhelming to choose a fabric and wait months for it to get here. Any dealings with fabric companies are really not my interest at all. I find great fabric here too :)
I have had new glasses with the slightest prescription error cause really bad headaches. Maybe you could try that. Stroking fabric is a satisfying indulgence.
The glasses are actually ok. I had the migraine for a few days and when it was over, I went to pick up my new glasses. These new ones made me a little dizzy while walking around and that’s better now :)
Thank you for high lighting this fabric. It’s something I will have to look for. I can’t wait to see what you with them. I hope you’re feeling better. ❤️
Hello Karina 😊 Thankyou for sharing your gorgeous fabrics! Cotton Sateen is my absolute favourite fabric, to dream with, to sew and to wear. I especially love your bright green and purple print, and your animal-inspired blue print with brighter pink highlights. All so beautiful! Your pattern suggestions are very helpful too, thankyou. You make me smile… I so enjoy looking at my fabrics too 🤗✨ New glasses look great on you!
Thank you I found this just so helpful I am definitely going to look for some cotton satin and I think I might try a blazer or skirt I am very excited now to try this material
You must have just read my mind . I have a piece of cotton sateen and had no idea what to make out of it . Now I have a few ideas . Thank you so much for the tutorial . I love your fabric choices too . Cheers fro Melbourne Australia . ❤️
I love all your fabrics. I hope you are feeling a little better. Migraines are really horrible Xxx I've made the Jessica dress I cotton sateen. The skirt isn't so big.
Thank you! I always think some of the best prints are in sateen. I never know what to do with them so I really appreciate the pattern advice! Also, the sa teens in your collection are amazing!
So sad you get migraines... my daughter does n they are just awful 😞 looks like you were feeling better by the end... Thank you for all the information on this fabric... I have never seen these in person but wondered often... wonderful information... I can see why you love these... gorgeous colors... that last yardage in teal white n pink made me gasp... 💜💙💜💙 the colors n structure are happy fabrics... made me smile n my imagination dance... wondering if a Love Notions Metro blazer would be a good pairing ??? Blessings 💙
The Metra blazer would not work. It’s designed for knits and especially on the sleeve, you need the vertical and horizontal stretch and ease of a knit fabric. These cotton sateens just don’t stretch enough for it to work.
There are some cotton sateens with zero stretch and they are made with 100% cotton but I have not seen any not have any in my collection, they do exist. Most commonly, they will have Lycra in there though.
Sateen is woven with a "satin weave" that instead of a plain under-over weave, will leave multiple overs in a row, so the weave is much smoother & shinier, but actually a bit weaker.
I’ve actually weaved the basic under/over with a loom so that’s easy for me to picture in my head. The sateen is 4 over and one under I believe and I try to imagine it 😀. I love the result.
Thanks so much. Lovely video! I have about 3 yards of a beautiful cotton sateen in my stash. Thinking about a shirt dress. Any pattern recommendations? Thanks again. Hope you have a relaxing weekend.
I also suffer with migraines so i sympathise. What I don't understand about pre washing is...... Do clothing manufacturers pre wash??? I doubt it. I'm on the fence with this.
I’d like to think that when we sew we are doing things better than the garment industry. My sons RTW T-shirts shrink after the first wash. It’s not just about that too. Fabric is really filthy from storage and it’s also got chemicals… At the end of the day it’s up to you. I’ve had disasters happen in the past with smaller clothes that don’t fit well because I did not wash them beforehand. Fabrics made from natural fiber fabrics are more sensitive to this than others, like polyester.
All my ready to wear natural fiber clothing shrinks even though I have always used cool water to wash them and only hang them to dry. I'm very tall, so have never had slacks or jeans or sleeves that are long enough. So manufacturers definitely don't pre wash the fabrics. That isn't because they think it doesn't need pre washing. Its because the garments would cost more to make and require a lot more manpower. If you don't care that your clothing will shrink and the fabric is dusty and coated with sizing and other chemicals and excess dyes, don't bother pre washing. Otherwise pre wash.
I think you just need to get your machine serviced and calibrated to check that. I don’t have any other advice than that and using a high quality thread.
I love that you are your own person and not influenced by fads. You know what you like and what works for you and you just DO it. No apologies! Hi Karina, could you please tell me what you use for the lining.Do you need something with stretch?
Not necessarily but I like to use a stretch poly satin as lining. It’s also got the same minimal stretch that cotton sateen does and it feels soft.
Is this fabric silky texture, I'm looking for similar to satin not as light weight or slippy. Great video thank you
It’s structured and soft but I would not call it silky. It has some light sheen. It has zero drape.
Thank you so much@@LiftingPinsandNeedles
I have tried every needle make and size needle on 4 way stretch
It just does not sew or it skips stitches all the time I just feel like giving up
