- If you enjoyed our quick tour of the Caravan and Motorhome clubs start bay site in the last video, here a bit more of what we got up-to !
We love a hike and this one is very special
This Devon coastal walk starts on the sea front at Torcross (grid ref. SX823423) and follows the South West Coast path all way down the coast south to Start Point and it's amazing lighthouse.
The return follows the outward route. Navigation is easy and with excellent coastal views throughout, it is the prefect route for a leisurely day beside the sea.
After arriving in Tor cross the turn south (with the sea to your left) and follow the generally well-signed South West Coast Path to Torcross Point. The path then diverts inland and climbs around the landward side of the disused Beesands Quarry before descending to continue past Widdicombe Ley (a lagoon to your right) and along Bee Sands to reach the small village of Beesands.
After a very short section of road walking the South West Coast Path climbs onto Tinsey Head before descending to the village of Hallsands.
The village of Hallsands was a small fishing village of 128 inhabitants. During the night of 26th January 1917 a huge storm hit the coast causing high tides and waves crashing against the shore. Four houses were lost before midnight and the next day another high tide took all but one house. Miraculously no lives were lost as everyone managed to scramble to safety. However, this was not totally a natural disaster. 18 years of dredging further up the coast (for Plymouth's naval dock) caused the angle and shape of the beach to change, and affected the low water mark, which moved further inland; meaning the natural protection they once had was gone.
A gentle descent from the viewpoint leads you towards the lighthouse at Start Point. Note that you leave the South West Coast Path for the final 500 metres of the walk to the lighthouse.
