Telling someone "you're not cute" is so incredibly rude. It's fine to tell someone they're not your type, but to say in a blanket statement that they don't look good is basically saying that nobody should find them attractive. All that coming from a guy with the personality of a cardboard cutout.

Honestly dude this whole thing really just shows how shallow we all are.
This game could be changed slightly to make it more positive.
It could be changed so that hitting the button means "stay" and that unless both of them hit "stay" within 60 seconds, then one of them, at random, has to go. If both hit "stay" in the first minute, then they have one more minute to both hit "stay", and if so, then they win. If both don't hit "stay" the second time, then one of them, at random, has to leave.
This would have a two-pronged effect. First, it would create an incentive to find out about the other person. Second, it would get rid of the small reward that the person doing the rejecting gets, by being guaranteed to continue playing and avoiding being rejected themselves.
That said, it's entertaining to watch someone get brutally rejected. It's just not very nice.

This would work much, MUCH better if there were two separate, secret buttons, so it's more like a prisoner's dilemma type of thing. Better yet if, instead of a "king of the hill" structure, it had a tournament-like approach were in each subsequent round, button-pressers get paired with button-pressers and non-button-pressers with non-button-pressers, so everyone eventually ends up facing a mirror image of themselves.
As it is right now, everyone enters the game knowing that they're facing someone who already shot down someone to be there, so you're incentivazed to take them down before you're next. Pretty bad environment for a conversation.
