For me, these two made the ideal Jeeves and Wooster! The show was brilliantly done by all involved. Seeing these other collaborations (I'm an American living in America) for the 1st time is a true joy. Thank you gentlemen!
i have read that originally they were to play the others parts , Fry as Wooster and Laurie as Jeeves and i think that would have also worked . Genius i still watch the episodes every year or two
Seriously glossed over Stephen's walking out on Cellmates. ""Citing stage fright and went abroad." He nearly checked out permanently. Perhaps he hadn't publicly admitted the suicide attempt, when this was recorded. Lot of respect for Fry's willingness to discuss his mental health issues in documentaries and interviews, especially after living with someone, for 15 years, who suffered from depression and anxiety. It's a horrible thing to witness and I can only imagine what it is like to live.
Thank you so much for uploading and sharing this!!! ❤ We had been looking all over for this to share with students. We kept coming back to UA-cam in the hope that someone would be kind enough to share this episode. Thank you.
I think Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry are probably the best double act we’ve ever had. And I’m someone who had adored Eric and Ern from the early sixties. In fact I saw Morecambe and Wise live on stage in London and it was fabulous. I really do hope Stephen and m’colleague find time to get together and maybe just do a one off special. We had the Reunited show which was great, but not the same as their sketch show.
in this world in this decade where mediocrity is the norm, we need more geniuses like these two. oh i will be super sad when these two dies that i know.
As an American... it's a shame it took over 20+ years with the creation of UA-cam for me to enjoy A Bit of Fry and Laurie. I mean, Monty Python was always available to us in the states, not that Fry and Laurie's comedy is exactly on par with Python, but it didn't have to be for me and others to enjoy it back then when it aired or even a few years later. I imagine it's possible that it could have been on a BBC cable TV channel and I just never caught it. Of course, my introduction to Hugh Laurie was from House not knowing he was British until he was on a talk show where he used his true accent and A Bit of Fry and Laurie was subsequently mentioned during the interview. Regardless, I'm happy to be able to see it now at will.
I feel the same way about American shows I had always seen being referenced in other media but never got the chance to see it. Currently watching old SCTV episodes and loving it
27:55 I feel some of the spirit of what they were together survive in the works of Mark Cooper-Jones and Jay Foreman, the brilliant yet funny and not at all unclever duo, Map Men
once they had established in HOUSE canon in the later seasons that the R Lee Ermy character wasn't House's biological father and that he wanted to find out who was, I held onto the tiniest hope til the end that it was going to turn out that House also had a half-brother from that true father, and Stephen Fry could've appeared to play him (and be smarter than him) and essentially be the Mycroft to House's Sherlock Holmes
When I first watched the first episode of 'Jeeves and Wooster', I was in my teens and, much as I enjoyed reading the books, I wasn't sure of how I felt about the TV series. It wasn't just the idea of Fry and Laurie playing these characters (it was my first introduction to the two), but after a couple of episodes I somehow felt that Hugh would do far better with serious roles (turns out, I was right... couldn't help but feel a bit "Nostradamy" when I first watched 'House, MD'). Stephen Fry did, however, seem like the perfect person to play Jeeves. It wasn't until much later that I realised the similarities between the character from the books and the actor (must be all that fish he eats!).
Fry: "Just a moment. If anyone is going to bugger this up, its going to be us!" The twit! By the way, I'm a huge fan of Hugh Laure from "HOUSE". And its delightful seeing this other side to him. I was under the false impression he was an unknown until House.
@@EA-vd4gd Yeah this was aired in 2005 (based on the copyright in the last few seconds of the video), when House was just getting into season 1, and news of it had probably not carried back to the UK.
"Avoir du pois" (literal translation, to have some peas. Reasons why are lost to history) is a rather posh way of describing the weights system that uses pounds, ounces, hundredweights, etc rather than grammes, kilos and the like.

Yeah, that wasn't public knowledge at the time this programme was made.

Yeah but Stephen is a very different man now isn't he.
What a lovely friendship!
They are the best!!
So interesting to see this retrospective of these 2 geniuses prior to Hugh becoming House.
Pity Fry never made a guest appearance
'The key to dancercise, is the rather ingenious coupling of the word dance,... to the word circumcise...!'
I would have gone for Exorcism, but the priest was on vacation.
Stephen Fry can do magic tricks with words! And these two together are amazing.

It’s a pity we won’t get to see them as Vimes and Willikins from the Discworld books

Good Lord, didn't you know about PBS?!?! My kids watched from age16, when they were old enough, and now they are 40. Sheesh.
Soupy twist!
I always thought that was such a fun ending to the show 😂
To this day, friends and I still say it before the first sip of a drink. Happy memories.
Ah Frye is "Lord Snot" on The Young One's University Challenge. Love how top notch comedy is all intertwined & lift everyone.

What about Saturday Night Fry on BBC home service?
And we are lucky you found each other

Yes Hugh and Emma were a thing, a long time ago …
What part did Stephen Fry have in “A Fish Called Wanda”?!
A bit part. Near the end.

Hutchison. I looked it up on the public IMDB database
He played an airline passenger at Heathrow near the end. Kevin Klein knocks him unconscious and steals his ticket.
