I was living in Calgary and we like a good underdog. This guy, along with the Jamaica Bobsled Team, were the only and probably last true amateurs at a former amateur showcase event that I now refuse to watch. As excited as we were in the leadup to the games, the politics and shenanigans was sickening and when it was offered the 2026 version without even having applied, the city refused.

We got to know a group of young Finnish people whilst on holiday in Greece about 10 years ago, when we told them we lived 15 miles from Cheltenham they asked if we knew Eddie. Apparently he is adored in Finland, they even phoned friends to tell them they'd met people who lived "quite" close to him...crazy!

Working on building sites the conversation about who do you think is best sports person often comes up, had I always answer Eddie the Eagle, for two reasons, with virtually no help he qualified and made it to the games, but more importantly he had the stamina to overcome those who were actively trying to stop him and work against him in any way possible, including the Olympic game organisers, they are the ones who should be ashamed at what they did to try and stop the flying Eagle.

What a fantastic man Eddie is. He was fortunate enough to compete against Matti Nykänen the then world champion who Famously said to Eddie, "The difference between us is that you are expected to lose but I am expected to win" That described fame and it eventually killed Matti with the pressures it bore.....alcoholism, drugs, violence and infamy......while Eddie lives on.
I loved his take on the Chinese Olympics. "Athletes have trained all their lives for this, politics should not come into it"

BRILLIANT interview of an all-round great man. Hats off to Eddie for doing what he did. (And shame on those stuffy British officials for not allowing him any further chances). About 3 years ago I visited Innsbruck in Austria. I stood at the bottom of the ski jump there and looked up and up and up..............I would never have the bottle to do what he did (and that's coming from a ski enthusiast and an ex-motorcycle racer (amateur).

Stood at the top of a ski jump. Made my legs turn to jelly. No way! Big respect to Eddie.

I remember watching it even now - well done that man If I ever meet him it would be an honour to buy him a pint, a good man stiched by the establishment (again)

Surely the government or authority could use Eddie to become a ambassador or influencer in schools etc. What a difference he could make in young peoples lives by just telling his story. His tenacity to overcome obstacles or just compete is inspirational but also his demeanour and humility is so refreshing

Remember him. Bloody brilliant. This guy should be knighted before Blair.
