  • The strategy for the turnaround of NBC6/6News was as follows:
Familiar names. The station hired journalist Sonya Gantt, daughter of former Charlotte mayor Harvey Gantt as 6PM and 11PM anchor. 6News then wooed meteorologists Ray Boylan and Terri Bennett away from rival WSOC.
Weather. Weather. Weather. Adding Ray Boylan and Terri Bennett cemented the station’s commitment to weather coverage.
Breaking News. Stay with breaking news, even if that means cutting into network programming.
Compassion. This is where on-air promotion comes in.
In May 2000, a pedestrian bridge at the Charlotte Motor Speedway collapsed. 107 people were injured. 6News broke into programming and stayed with the story long after competing newscasts broke away. NBC6’s 6News, once a poor third in news ratings, tied for first place in A25-54 ratings for the May 2000 sweeps.
