  • The Portuguese Air Force shows us their Quick Reaction Alert (QRA) training at Monte Real Air Base (Base Aérea de Monte Real) and explains the state of readiness they have to maintain to be airborne within 15 minutes.
Quick Reaction Alert, known colloquially as QRA, is state of readiness and modus operandi of air defence maintained at all hours of the day by NATO. Fighter jets can be airborne within minutes to intercept and identify unknown aircraft operating within NATO airspace. Member countries provide the necessary aircraft and assets for the air policing of their own countries. For those countries that do not have this capability within or near NATO airspace, other NATO members will assist on a rotational basis.

While I get it’s easy to make fun of Portugal, they don’t have just 4 or half a dozen of them. They have 20 something. Don’t know the exact number. But yeah it’s also the best aircraft we have and apparently no plans to replace them. Of of the few euro nations still flying them, Portugal the only one without a replacement in sight. Instead I think they going for the VIPER upgrade to extend their life a few more years. Still doesn’t solve the problem we need replacements. So we can remain, at least, relevant enough to be accounted for in NATO business. And at the least so we can also be accounted for when it comes to European airspace defense. Just wish we had the aircrafts. We already have the men more than capable enough.
Remember those couple of years the Russian were going crazy “invading” European airspace? Everyone was talking about a 3rd world war. Around 80% of those interceptions in all European airspace was conducted by Portuguese air defense. Granted that coincidently Portugal was at that time responsible for the Baltic air police. Any other country would’ve perform equally great. But I mean, granted we have the right aircraft to do the job, you can sleep safe and sound, in Europe, if knowing it’s still the Portuguese Air Force there.

If they were given the order to blow up a commercial airliner, would they do it?

USAF had Zulu Alert time in the Cold War, which was 5 minutes to launch.

i don't think 5-6 minutes is hard to achieve if you rush to your hanger and all the ground crew are ready for startup before you arrive your jet
