@tuunee1 it depends, the planes were made for different purposes. The yak3 was designed as a pure air superiority fighter that performs best below 15000 ft. The p51 was designed as a high altitude bomber escort fighter, so fuel capacity alone made it notably heavier than the yak. It probably could not out turn the yak, but it was about 30 mph faster so hit and run or boom zoom attacks are very possible. All in all, it comes down to the pilot.
The 4800 built during the war flew with the VK-105PF2 of around 1300 HP and had a top speed of 646 km/h in 5000 m, certainly a hotrod with 2550 kg, but so was a Bf109 G-10 with 1800 HP (C3 fuel and MW50) and 3280 kg or a Spit MkXIV with the Griffon ! Also for aggressive Aerobatics go look for "Stallion 51-Lee's Lauderback's Solo Mustang Demo Airshow routine from inside the cockpit of the P-51" this Yak-3 demo is tame in comparison.
It was designed before the P-51, and the P-51 didn't even HAVE the distinctive shape of the later models until 1943. The Yak-1 was around in 1940. Try again.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is a "real" Yak-3, unlike the Yak-11 conversions make to look like Yak-3's and -9s. Excellent to see. I'd pay a small fortune to see an old Yak-1 or LaGG-3 flying at an airshow, and even more if they had Klimov engines.
Was this the Yak that had a lot of work done on it at Duxford around 2001? If so I am amazed to see it doing this after I saw it in bits in one of the workshops back then.
@JasonZarifis I don't think they could ever reach this kind of speed. Most likely it's a mistake. Yak-3 is rated at about 422mph or up to 447 in some later versions (not sure how widely those were used). And actually Allison would be a downgrade (in power at least, not likey in reliability, as VK-105/107 engines tended to overheat and wear out quickly), because it made around 1150hp vs 1500+ for Klimov powerplant. Granted, Yak-3 was probably the best dogfighter of WWII

It is more similar to ''m6a#/n1ja'' with even greater maneuverability & speed but less powerfull armament and no bomb load. Was a pure dogfight beast, trought sniper pilots ''aces'' liked ol yak-9 more, cause of it 1 hit kill with 37mm cannon. Meanwhile yak-3 was a more friendly machine for new pilots.
