In 1990 I gave up smoking to save enough money so I can Meet the Possum all the way from Australia no one knows how much I miss you George you are a legend with out a doubt.
I'm 21 years old, I grew up listening to rap, but when I moved closer to my grandparents I always go on car rides, my grandpa always listens to george jones and now I just love him, all I listen to now, he's just one of the best
Whenever I listen to George Jones it reminds me of the days with my grandpa, we listened to his records all day long in the summer. They don’t make country like this anymore. George Jones is the GOAT 🐐
It brings tears to my eyes hearing and seeing this video. This has always been one of my favorite George Jones songs. I miss him very much along with all the other country greats that have passed on. Thanks to all the folks who post great videos like this here in UA-cam.
+Gordon Anderson Thanks for your comments Gordon. Times change but not always for the better as they say. I was fortunate to be in my early years while these artists were starting their singing careers.
@@StevenCryar I'm a 40+ year Jones obsessive, but I stopped watching his TV performances years ago because it's just too hard to watch someone so gifted grapple with his personal demons on camera. But revisiting this one after the latest C&R, I'm not sure I see the high drama Tyler sees. I don't see someone struggling to hold back tears or resisting connecting emotionally with a song. I see a sheepish, S***-I'm-way-too-drunk-to-be-on-TV Jones struggling to get through a performance and then expressing relief when he does. Compare it to the slightly later TV spots (presumably from the "happier" times that C&R will cover next week). Same guitar strap, new haircut, pretty much identical George. IMO, his very first TV appearances, nervous exhaustion, self-medication, and abject terror already in plain view, are even more haunting. As scared as George apparently was, he didn't know what was coming. We do.
@@hairlab_dc4417 Agreed. He just looks very drunk here. The rendition of The Race is On from later in this same show really shows how blasted he was. The early ones are rough; but my God the appearances from the late 70’s/early 80’s are just sad. He’s so clearly breaking down and dying on live TV, and everyone knows it. There’s a clip of him singing He Stopped Loving Her Today on TV with Tammy onstage for some reason, and the camera shows Tammy at the end of the song clearly in tears. George looked like death on two legs, and it’s not hard to imagine what was going through her mind.
He did seem a bit sad at that time but he performed the song very well. At the end of his song George thanked Porter for having him on his show and Porter told George that he had been trying to for a long time to get you but you are always so busy.
Memories of my Dad blasting his ole stereo turntable system with kickass speakers hahaha he loves him some Possum as he was his favorite country singer. RIP Dad 1953-2023
Bless your Dad. I feel the same way about my Dad 1928-2021. Still treasure songs from his first vinyl records on our first stereo, Hank Williams and Hank Thompson !
When I saw George Jones About six years ago in Seattle his voice was Booming and filled the theater, incredible singer, the music was not overbearingly loud either, and his band was great...GA
This is my husband and my song. My sweetheart just crossed over into Heaven June 22, 2020 from a massive stroke and my heart literally bleeds for him every day. He promised me I could go first cause of my Cancer and severe illness. I miss him every moment now...😭😭😭
Same here. But I really don’t see what Tyler describes and I’ve watched it a number of times trying to notice. Maybe I’m just jaded. I also think his vocals are top notch in this version.
My folks were longtime fans of George. As a treat I took the folks to see George in concert. It’s one of my favorite memories and somewhat bittersweet now that they have all passed on.
Love George Jones .Very nice voice.Brings back a lot of wonderful memories with my Ex Boyfriend who Is now in heaven.Sure miss our good times we had.Wish we could go back and do it over again.
I want to say both me and my wife did use this song for our wedding. It means so much to me to hear this song. For I want to walk through this world with her my wife the love of my life.
This is such a great live performance of this, my favorite song of George's. I remember seeing a program, many years ago, hosted by Ray Stevens, where he showed clips from some old country music TV shows, and he introduced this one as being aired in June 1968.
Am only now discovering George Jones and Tammy Wynette. Beautiful song, and sung with so much heart. George Jones, Keith Whitley, Conway Twitty...not sure they can ever be replaced. Thank goodness we have these recordings and videos.
love king george for years but i too recently got acquainted with his duets with tammy wynette....do yourself a favor, if you havent seen it already, and watch this one ua-cam.com/video/0pQObXNIQvo/v-deo.html
What is George Jones...he is us and all our pain.. heartache..joy.. and happiness. When he sings it goes to the soul and resides forever. We love him because of the memories just his voice calls back to us.. can't imagine what the world would have been without him.
Been divorced for a few years. Met a new gal I'm nuts about and every time I play this song I think of her. It's been a rough road but the future looks good now.
In 1990 I gave up smoking to save enough money so I can Meet the Possum all the way from Australia no one knows how much I miss you George you are a legend with out a doubt.
Now that takes some will power. I’m proud of you.
It took a heart attack for me to quit.
Stay quit.
Nobody can extract the tears like the Possum. He was born to sing ballads and nobody could sing them like him.
I don't know Conway Twitty was pretty darn good too
Nobody.
I'm 21 years old, I grew up listening to rap, but when I moved closer to my grandparents I always go on car rides, my grandpa always listens to george jones and now I just love him, all I listen to now, he's just one of the best
Cool story.. I remember my Dad playing George Jones all the time. One thing me and Dad always agreed on was George. Good memories...
Thomas, you have good taste. Grandparents are the best teachers!
I know that feeling partner George jones is literally imprinted on me I could never stop listening to this good man. Cheers friend
Your Granpa didn't steer you wrong son. Nobody sings like George. That's what made him a country legend.
Great switch!🎯🎯🎯
When I watch George sing I see a beautiful man with the greatest voice and lots of sadness in his life.
Today's So Called Country Singers Couldn't Wipe This Man's Boots 🎸🎸🎸🎸

Amen to that
Perfection! Never be another with this skill, heart, and talent. Man I miss him. 🇺🇲
Waylon said one time "If we could all sound like we want to, we'd all sound like George Jones. He might have been right.
Coming from Waylon, that's high praise.
Greatest country voice ever in my opinion.
Lefty Frizzell is my choice for # 1. George & Merle # 2
Your opinion is right on the money.

Tyler Mahan Coe brought me here....and damn was he right.
No shit. It’s a hard watch.
Its like he is singing at you with his eyes. He is my favorite male country singer.
So true, George is singing with his eyes.so captivating.
I was born listening George Jones and Hank Williams music...and Buck and Jim Reeves....such a beautiful music...a real country music!! Thank you!!

So sad a woman today will never know loving words like this!
It doesn't get any better than this.
GJ's ability focus was inspiring. You can see it in his eyes every time he prepares to sing a phrase.
This song just doesn't get old.
:)
This voice doesn't and will never get old !!
One of the greatest voices in any genre of music.
“POSSUM”!
@rebeccalara6574 some call him "no show Jones" but I'm partial to Possum as well.
God, what a voice he had!!!

Assist me in the realization I was born in the wrong era. Songs like this make me cry and I'm a tough man!
+Gordon Anderson Thanks for your comments Gordon. Times change but not always for the better as they say. I was fortunate to be in my early years while these artists were starting their singing careers.
+Gordon Anderson I miss the songs that had sentiments and romance.
I love this comment. That's how I feel... I'm not a 'tough' woman though when it comes to George hehe but I was for sure born in the wrong era!
Hi Paris, i'm John and will you marry me! Ha!Ha!, you are a doll!

This particular performance is discussed pretty extensively in C&R season 2 ep. 7
That's what brought me here. I've honestly never really seen a whole lot of live footage from his flat top days before now
