How I made a feature film for $2,500

  • Last year I had the first screening for my first feature film, Subject 36. This is the story of how I made it for virtually no money, and who I have to thank for helping it come into existence. Making a feature film for almost no money is very challenging, and every no-budget feature comes with it's own set of unexpected challenges. I hope you enjoy learning about my micro-budget journey.

To me hearing what you did, you succeeded on every level. For a first time, you learned so much more what you’d learn at film school.
    Keep it up!

That's awesome man. I'm currently trying to make my own attempt at a feature with basically no money, and this video really motivated me. I'm in your shoes right now where I don't have a crew and have to do multiple positions myself. I really like how you talked about being introverted, and that made it difficult to put yourself out there and ask for free locations. That's something I'm currently struggling with as a introvert. Good luck, and I hope you have success in your future!

Loved this! Very helpful. A secondary video that would be helpful would be more specific. 'I shot this, but this would have been better'. 'I learned the value of feeding people, especially if you can't pay them'. 'I sweated THIS, but it turned out to be THAT that was the issue'. You learned, but more concrete examples would help us. Thank you for this.

Yes, spending the money on making the film vs. going to film schools was probably a good idea!

I think that depends on whether or not you've already had a bit of experience and if you own your own gear or not. Bare with me, I'll explain. Go to film school with some experience, confidence and a ready to shoot script. Use their gear, their studio, their edit suites. Use the students as your crew and the tutors for guidance when you need to. This is the David Lynch / John Carpenter route. Rather than the opposite way, of just spending the fees making a feature like Christopher Nolan / Robert Rodriguez / Sam Raimi, etc. Neither way is wrong.

I shot mine- The Last Great Ecowarrior for under 500 or around there. I managed this with a three person cast and intentionally going with an eco-terrorist story line because where do they live---the forest. There was absolutely no sets involved. Additionally, being a musician myself I used my contacts for a great soundtrack of both professional Russian and American bands. Given excellent editing programs like Vegas or Adobe I was able to shoot with just a Canon G20 with the audio on Reaper and with a little color grading and contrast adjustments it looks great.

UPDATE: Awe man, this title is not available in my region (I live in Scotland). Got to see the trailer though.

I disagree with getting people to help for free. The reason is just about everyone will say yes to helping make a film but when it comes right down to it they don't show up or they do a poor job because they're not being paid.
