The thing that all those luxury companies forget is that the perceived value of their products is also due to the value of their products on the secondary market. If it was legally forbidden to sell your product, many people would think twice about buying any luxury product and most people that buy a new product for an inflated price because they subconsciously subtract the secondary market price from the purchase price will never sell the product anyway, but they would not have bought the new product in the first place, if the secondary market had never existed.
They overestimated themselves so now they’re trying to regulate the 2nd hand market. They just want to be the only ones being able to do it, making even more money.

@@tuttuttut7758 But if the luxury company controls their own 2nd hand market, the original value proposition does not exist anymore, because what makes it attractive for potential sellers is that the price is not regulated by the luxury company, but could potentially move upwards and is not supressed by a one buyer monopoly.

Rather than dealing with courts Chanel can perhaps invest in a buy-back program that is reasonable for Chanel bag owners and for used bag buyers. That way they can own the second hand market as well.

It's an awesome idea on the surface, but my fear is that they may buy back for far less (to dissuade 2nd hand) and sell it for much more (they're greedy goblins) than current pre-loved prices. Serious upside is they authenticate those pre-loved bags. I'm on the fence with this idea.
I agree that only Chanel should be able to verify whether a Chanel product is genuine or not. But can I be sure that the employee has a trained eye to see if the product is genuine or not ? 💜

Luxury brands want to be gatekeepers. Totally agree with you Dacob, if their prices were more reasonable we would try to buy from the brand rather than 2nd hand.

Give me good quality and reasonable prices and I will keep buying directly from your boutique and will seldomly reach out for pre loved, unless of course I am looking for a discontinued model which the brand no longer produces itself. In that case I would only have the pre loved route as an option to obtain said discontinued piece. 💖

I think the quality went down the toilet years ago. When I compare my old with new for sale now its terrible.
I once watched a program on TV in uk 🇬🇧 only 20% of the item has to be made in the country it claims. I could be wrong on the percentage but it's very low..So made in Italy or Paris could also include China India ect ect.

I agree with you Dacob, I thought Chanel were trying to stop other companies from re-selling any of their bags. The problem is most people justify buying Chanel bags because they could sell them and recover their costs. How can you justify buy a bag that is almost worthless the minute they walk out of the door? Unless Chanel want to become re-sellers or have their dedicated reassignment store? I still think this would buy them on the bum because why would resell one of your own bags for less than half price? Doesn’t that reduce the value of your new stock overnight? Also could you image the faces of the snooty Chanel store staff selling something pre-loved? Great video as ever.
Chanel and Hermes has been trying to control the secondary markets for years now. Chanel is so high on its horse thinking that a lot of people buy their classic flaps, cos they truly love the bag. No, Chanel, a lot of people buy it because of the potential "investment value" (and I do hate that phrase in regards to bags), so if there's no secondary market, there's no "investment value".
If Chanel lowers its prices ( not gonna happen in my opinion), a customer might ask / and rightfully so!/ So, Chanel.. You are lowering the prices, so does it mean you sell at a new lower price point and you still make profit? So, maybe, just maybe, you can get lower? So, what is a REALISTIC value of your items? How much are we overpaying you for questionable quality? How can we trust you now? I mean, for Chanel it is all about maintaining the exclusivity and desirability, so I see no plausible scenario where they lower their prices or at least, stop increasing them constantly.
I have several Chanel bags from WGACA and love them several preloved stores including Real Real are near Chanel boutique in SoHo

@Super Dacob - I heard that Neiman Marcus has an agreement with FASHIONPHILE and that FASHIONPHILE gets their overstock of Chanel, is this true? I have been in the store and someone tried to return a pair of Chanel shoes and they wouldn't take them. However, told the customer to try and sell the shoes to FASHIONPHILE and they can either get cash or store credit to NM. If this is the case then maybe they are trying to put FASHIONPHILE's competitors out of business.

Hold your over 10K Chanel bags dear to your heart. As soon as you pass the return window you become its forever home. Chanel must know potential clients are seeing this play out debating whether to buy. Can't imagine the courts will say Chanel basically holds a sort of ownership over all bags - sold and unsold for eternity. Seems outrageous the courts will give Chanel an injunction that a store specializing in pre-loved goods can no longer sell Chanel items. It would authorize Chanel suing all resellers one by one until they are all unable to sell their goods thereby killing the preloved market. (this entire comment is an opinion and alleged).
They do own the ability to authenticate. It's an ownership right, just like the name and trademark. The question is whether a NON-manufacturer can EVER authenticate.

I’m dying at WGACA abbreviation! I hope it becomes a globally recognized nickname! I do believe authenticators should be able to offer their assurances, assuming all risk and liability if proven otherwise. Regardless. Chanel is a bit petty for this! Lol😂
I want to add my opinion that stolen then voided serial numbers does not equal fake. It means it was stolen. That’s a whole nother issue, but as I recall, those voided numbers are not public information. So how would someone know that their bag was voided deemed fake. It’s all so interesting.
If Chanel wants to be the only authenticator. Then provide that service!
Is Chanel going to open pre-loved stores? I would have to see the numbers but it seems the big C is going to hurt themselves as value is seen on the secondary market. If no one can sell their “investment” at an increased valued it becomes more difficult to justify their products especially when quality has dropped. I think their value will go down.
WGACA is also sold at Disneyland and in Disneyland California.
The secondhand market has exploded because all the new designs and quality of fashion houses are crap. There's a wider, much better selection, and at a much better price. No one likes being ripped off! Contrary to popular belief- super wealthy people REALLY don't like being ripped off even if the money doesn't matter.

This case highlights what I now say about these brands. Whilst folk are swayed by the history of such companies. They have long evolved into cold hearted money making machines. They are now in a position to bully other companies out of business because that is also their plan imo. $4M is a lot of Money for any business to pay let alone a reselling business. Folks if you don't make your true feelings known about this you will not have a second hand market. Public opinion can change things 💜

As a reseller I would love to see WGACA win. As a deep diver into the workings of the “elite” (scumbags) I know there is a non compete agenda. Either you are a member of the Club or you are not. Club members have judges in their pockets. WAGAGA is not a member of the Club so they will not win in a corrupt system.

These demands Chanel is making is like BMW going after used car dealerships for selling preloved vehicles or tricked out BMWs that still have the BMW logo or cars that stuck a BMW logo on it even though it's clearly not a BMW. Insane.
My take on authenticators is this: an authenticator has to athenticate dozens, possibly hundreds of brands, and within these brands- shoes, bags, sunglasses, belts, you name it. I mean, it is virtually impossible to be aware of every possible colourway, limited edition etc. I mean, technically, one can be knowledgeable and have a wide grasp and understanding, but what about superfakes?
Authenticators that work for major corps use x-ray machines, advanced technologies, microscopes, etc to authenticate. With years of backlogged info on the brand and fakes to compare the real thing to. Most authenticators have worked for designer brands themselves and know the product. (I took a tour of Fashionphile's headquarters in NYC and was highly impressed, and I have much respect for the years of knowledge authenticators have.) Now granted, that's not to say that all resale sites are flawless all the time, and who's to say that an employee at a Chanel boutique even has the knowledge to authenticate. It simply depends on an individuals experience, knowledge, and tools.
I see you enjoyed the cool-aid Fashionphile had prepared that day for you. Lovely. Employees who work at Chanel boutiques are not allowed to authenticate the bags clients bring in. If you wish Chanel to authenticate your preloved bag for you, you will need to go to a Chanel boutique and ask them to use the authentication service, granted they offer you said service. If they grant you said service, then your bag will be sent off to Chanel in France where it will be either sourced out to their French or Italian chains and will then be properly inspected for authenticity. This service is not free of charge of course and of course if they find your bag to not be authentic they reserve the rights to destroy said bag without sending it back to you. You will of course not receive your money back either. So you see, no reason to shame passive aggressively the staff working in Chanel boutiques for not being able to authenticate a pre loved bag. Their job is to sell boutique bags. Their job is not to authenticate pre loved bags.

And if you're miraculously fortunate enough to be offered this service, whether its sent to Chanel or a major reputable reseller, it depends on the individuals experience, knowledge, and tools (Like I said). Since the same methods that would be used to authenticate at Chanel would be pretty much the same methods certain major resellers use (Possibly even not as advanced as the resellers with reputations to lose). And there was no passive aggressiveness in my comment. You just took it that way. Lol.

Chanel's heavy-handedness may work against them. Those who can afford Chanel bags may re-consider purchasing. If they re-sell their bags as soon as a new one comes out they may see Chanel's "clamp down" on resales as an obstacle to do so in future.

In the early 2000’s I worked as a counter manager for ESTEE LAUDER and I distinctly remember that during the launch of a new product called PERFECTIONIST , I acquired several CHANEL point of sale product display units from the CHANEL counter that was opposite of me. That particular counter had no manager only a Chanel employed make up artist. She was a lovely woman that has had a long career with the company and we would trade gratis items all the time. It was no big deal at that time. At that time I think the fragrance CHANCE was fairly new, I have a CHANEL CHANCE DISPLAY UNIT along with several No 5 units. They are in storage and I have not seen them in years. But I believe if my memory serves me correctly the CHANCE campaign had something like a 1940s Flapper vibe and I know that the No 5s units that I have are just standard units. I remember trading a Pleasure’s intense display unit for a CHANEL unit. OOhhhh and I also remember trading a youth dew unit for a huge CHANEL no 5 dummy bottle. Only I think it really did have perfume in it and not water. Whoops on her part. lol.
