For those wondering why this is so damn nostalgic, when we were young (probably 5-10 years old), there was a TV show that played almost every day in the summer called Journey to the West (1986 version). This show really brought every family member or every kid in the neighborhood together.
This is like the equivalent of nostalgic 90s kids in America watching new episodes kf Pokemon, Yugioh, jackie chan adventures, etc on Saturday mornings

I'm American and hadn't seen journey to the west in a long time but when i heard this theme start playing i got so unnecessarily hype that people had to come check that i was ok lol. This story brought me nearly to tears many times while watching the cutscenes and the music is just incredible. I'm glad you can still hear the synth drum from the OG theme in this one. Very well done to the composer and i hope every Asian alive sees this as a worthy successor to the journey to the west and finds this story fulfilling

I'm from indonesia, we know the journey to the west but we only remember the 1996 version where the intro song is an indonesian dubbed rap song. This is because we don't have diplomatic relation with China until 1993, so we never watch the 1986 version. Guess its not to late to enjoy such a good song.

Hi all. Literally my childhood too. Would remember getting back home back from school and grandpa and grandma and my parents already waiting for me with delicious food out and sweets to watch the newest episodes of Journey to the West. So many years have passed and 2 of my grandpas passed on. But man did they love to instill the love of the Monkey to me. 🥺 I was so lucky to have them and I was so lucky we got to watch this show and its funky intro together. Love you my parents and gran grans. I will show my kids and grand kids this with the same boundless love you guys showed me. Man I wish the good afterlife has those sweet precious moments too.

I'm a very Australian guy and too young to have seen it in back in the day, but listening to this unearthed a distinct memory of my dad, now in his late 50s and also very Australian, talking about this show he watched and loved a a kid, and how he spent a day scouring the internet in an attempt to show it to us. He was only able to find one episode but listening to this reminded me not just of how much he enjoyed it but also how much fun I had watching that single episode when I was a kid. Makes me want to try and find the whole series so we can sit down and watch it together.

What I find interesting that is that Vietnam showed the Chinese tv series from 1986 after only recently fighting a war with China in 1979? It’s actually quite fascinating how Vietnam is quick to move on (another example is America - Vietnam fought a long brutal war with them yet they reestablished relations with the Americans fairly quickly).

Asked dad permission to go see what they were and it was the Wukong 80's TV series, but it didn't have english subtitles so I didn't understand what it was saying. He tried to translate but the funny jovial monkey was entertaining nonetheless. These long years later I DM him on Discord and asked how he was feeling. He links me this, and just screams. Laughed and asked him now that we're older if he could help me understand that TV show better or tell me where I can find it with subtitles. XD

We Vietnamese watched “Journey to the West” every summer on national television channel at 5.30 pm and I mean every single summer for about 20 years and still counting on. We never get bored of it. Back then I enjoy the show because the powerful Wukong. Now I realize that there’re some traditional culture values and life lessons beyond that. Deep down We value the contribution of the cast, the director Yang Jie to create this masterpiece and the author of the original novel Wu Cheng’en whose creation is far beyond his time and is immortal. Personally I think you should speak Chinese or Vietnamese to understand clearly the show, the game or the novel.

We Vietnamese watched “Journey to the West” every summer on national television channel at 5.30 pm and I mean every single summer for about 20 years and still counting on. We never get bored of it. Back then I enjoy the show because the powerful Wukong. Now I realize that there’re some traditional culture values and life lessons beyond that. Deep down We value the contribution of the cast, the director Yang Jie to create this masterpiece and the author of the original novel Wu Cheng’en whose creation is far beyond his time and is immortal.
Personally I think you should speak Chinese or Vietnamese to understand clearly the show, the game or the novel.

im not asian. i didnt grow up with JTTW and yet, somehow i feel strongly connected to sun wukong. not the least because of dragonball of course, but even aside from that playing this game, it just somehow gives me that feeling i only had, when i was a kid. the music, the visuals, the story... just immersive and epic escapism
