- how to preserve a spider web and turn it into art. Here are the 5 simple steps:
1. find an abandoned spider web with no spider currently living in it
2. spray the web with white spray paint from about a foot away
3. take a piece of black paper and coat it with hair spray
4. gently push the wet side of the paper behind the web until it sticks
5. add a layer of spray-on glue to protect it and put it into a frame

Confused on step one. Sprayed hornets nest instead. I highly recommend not doing that. Very painful.

I owned several hornet nests actually
Hornet nests are not the same as a spider web! You couldn't do it with a hornet nest as they are large cylindrical shaped objects, that look like they are made of paper. Some folk buy these old nests to use as decor.
Quick tip before doing this: Give the spider a eviction letter

I have 160 year old windows, which is to say spiders and others can pass freely in and out. I'm on team spider in this equation, and so preserve spider webs by not cleaning. Now perhaps I'll call it art, to add further joy to the set up. ♡

Most spiders do not hang out in the middle of their webs the way orb weavers sometimes do. Instead, they hide in a secluded area off to the edge, sometimes inside a rolled up leaf, where they await a specific type of vibration in their trap.
In other words, just because the web looks "empty" doesn't mean it's not actively being used by a spider to catch its next meal.
This. Odds are good this guy just poisoned and killed a spider.

I have befriended a furrow spider, named him/her Fern. Fern is an orb weaver and makes me a new beautiful web every night, he gets started about 9pm. Maybe ill preserve one of his creations one day to remember him. Have some great photos of the webs and Fern. Maybe ill just print and frame one of those instead 😂

Is Fern big, or tiny? If big, Fern is a she! If smol, it's a he. But generally, mostly female orb weavers make those huge, grandiose webs, depending on the species. So it's good odds calling it a female name.
@WobblesandBean Fern is about the size of a quarter so I'd say big. Probably female!

Fern comes back every day to the same place at the same time and makes a new web every night. We had a tree removed next to where she weaves, and was worried about her, but that night, same as always, she came back.

My mom uses to do this all the time, I used to love finding an old untouched spiderweb so she could put it on black construction paper. I used to save them specifically for this purpose :)

Omg! We have several spiders in our warehouse, all of which we have named ridiculously hilarious versions of normal names (plus some random ones). I know many of them don't use some of the webs around any more, I might have to try this because our little goth brains love spiders.

Hi, zoologist here. Just because the web is empty doesn't mean it's not occupied. Many spiders hide off to the side, waiting for the trigger strands to vibrate, just like a dozing fisherman whose line goes taut. So this isn't exactly harmless.
You studied the behavior of spiders in zoology? That’s pretty nifty! Im an ornithologist and the only thing we learned about spiders is which ones get eaten by birds

Okay crazy story. I read this method in a book many years ago, no clue the book it’s been at least 15 years sorry. When I missed an assignment in art class due to sickness or something, I had to write a paper on an artist. So I made up an artist, described this technique, said the artist’s website was down so I couldn’t cite it, and got an A+. I never confessed.
