Kareem 40 pts vs. Sixers (Game 5, 1980 NBA finals)

- Kareem had 40 pts, 15 rebounds and 4 blocks. This is also the game where Kareem injured his ankle leaving the stage open for Magic in Game 6. The injury occurs at 3:40. Kareem comes back at the start of the fourth period and hits heroic shots to win the game. Magic's performance might be the most memorable thing to come out of this series but equally, if nor more, impressive was Kareem's dominance in the first five games. If not for those clutch shots, the Lakers probably wouldn't have the 3-2 series lead which provided them the opportunity to knockout the Sixers in game 6.
Also included a couple of smooth Dr. J and Dawkins plays here.
Kareem is the greatest player in the history of basketball. Period.
167-4 combined high school and NCAA record, yeah, superhero cartoon shit, wins the NBA title SIXTEEN years apart, schools EVERYONE from Wilt to Akeem. Jabbar is the GOAT truly
A True legend but Michael Jordan is the greatest athlete of all times, not just basketball
@@eliastheod not muhammad ali is the greatest athlete ever
@@eliastheod Jordan's not greater than Muhammad Ali or Bo Jackson. Stop it.
I love Magic, but Kareem got robbed on the Finals MVP. His numbers were monsterous and he IS the reason they were in the Finals and won the Finals. Magic had one great game and gets all the glory. Kareem averaged 33/14/4ast/5blk...thats huge.
If not for that game 6 clincher put on by Magic(minus Kareem) then yeah. EVERYONE on the 76ers had their bags packed to go back to LA for GM 7--and Kareem most likely would've played and played well.
the passing from magic johnson didn't equal the scoring from kareem abdul-jabbar so the 1980 1982 and 1987 finals mvp's should've been awarded to kareem abdul-jabbar
@@youtuber3328 I'm not sure about the 1982 finals off the top of my head but 1987 that was definitely Magic Johnson
look at their 1987 playoff statistics and factor in that being the eighth year for legend magic johnson and eighteenth for legend kareem abdul-jabbar
It was for Kareem.. But Magic deserved it too.. Magic said, "many of those MVP is His"
Damn, that sky hook is the most beautiful and deadly shot in basketball history.
During this game my mother was pregnant with me, and it was at this point where she decided to name me after Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
kareem definitely shouldve been mvp.
SniffyPoo without question
They gave to Magic because of his Game 6 performance when Kareem did not play.
Yeah magic was legendary at that game and all stuf but who on earth with a brain would vote him for fmvp instead of Kareem
Background story: After Kareem's game-winning performance here, he was unable to even travel with the team (the team feared the sprained ankle he suffered would swell worse with the flight altitude) to Philadelphia. His performance gave them a 3-2 lead (poker translation--House Money). So the thought process was, let Kareem rest because Philly will blow the Lakers out in Game 6. Kareem will hopefully be ready for Game 7 Sunday afternoon.
Of course, Magic Johnson had his best game ever (42 points, 15 rebounds) with strong support from Jamaal Wilkes (37 points, 10 rebounds) and the Lakers took the title in Philly.
As Game 6 wound down, CBS frantically pleaded with the MVP writers to change their votes from Kareem to Magic because Kareem wasn't there to receive the award, according to Bill Livingston, one of the writers with an MVP vote.
"A couple of us writers writers were dumb enough to change our votes," Livingston wrote in the Cleveland Plain Dealer in 1988, "to rob Kareem of the MVP, by a 4-3 margin."
Of course, that paved the way for revisionist history to say "Magic carried Kareem and the Lakers to five championships" on the strength of, Hey, Magic was Finals MVP three times during Showtime and Kareem was Finals MVP only once. That's some powerful behind-the-scenes corruption. Remember, a writer with an MVP vote (Bill Livingston) confessed the truth that he (along with another writer) changed his vote.
So, CBS Sports almost destroys the NBA and hurts Kareem's legacy.
@@hitman321100 yes game 6 u shouldnt win an fmvp just because of one game kareem averaged 33 and 15 and like 5 blocks that series and magic averaged 20 and like 10 assists that should have been kareems fmvp
Sorry folks, but Kareem Abdul jabbar was the best I ever saw, he was great in high school, college, and the pro's. I once told a friend that I would ask 100 people who they thought was the best player of all time was, and 1 other person said Kareem! So sad. most people said jordan or labron, Magic or Kobe.
Here fact-checking this TV show
Wow. That sky hook. No doubt he learned a great deal under Wooden, but he came to UCLA with that shot, which was unstoppable. Poetry. Incredible basketball player.
Came back to this because of Winning Time. Kareem was don this on a sprained ankle. Bad man right there.
giving magic that finals mvp was a bunch of bs and the league knew it.
until 1985 Kareem was the Lakers MVP. Then, Magic.
that dunk by dr j
Young big men today should really study and try to emulate aspects of Kareem's game, namely the sky hook. The sky hook to this day is the most unstoppable offensive weapon ever. I just don't understand why more 7 foot centers don't utilize that shot.
They rather jam it down your throat. No one in today's game cares to emulate Kareem's powerful grace.
@@BrotherApexx. No they rather shoot Threes🤢🤢🤢🤢
It’s extremely difficult Kareem was special because of just how accurate he was with that shot, there really was nothing like Kareem in that sense. His talent for shooting skyhooks is like curry’s talent for shooting threes. Other players can do it, but not with that level of consistent accuracy
For really tall lean players it's really the only thing you can do. They're not strong or quick enough to do much else in the low post. Ralph Sampson used it a bit, but not as effectively as Ralph shot well under 50% for his career.
Agreed, Kareem deserved the Finals MVP. Like you said, he was a monster out there, totally unstoppable.
the passing from magic johnson didn't equal the scoring from kareem abdul-jabbar so the 1980 1982 and 1987 finals mvp's should've been awarded to kareem abdul-jabbar
I'm here because of "Winning time" Lakers Dynasty series. 💎🙌🏾💎
That series should’ve NEVER been cancelled
I remember watching this game live.
This was really an underrated performance by Kareem. 33.4 ppg 13.6 rebounds and 4.6 blocks. He would've been finals MVP if he wasn't injured game 6. He dominated that entire playoffs
the passing from magic johnson didn't equal the scoring from kareem abdul-jabbar so the 1980 1982 and 1987 finals mvp's should've been awarded to kareem abdul-jabbar
Yup, you look at Kareem's numbers and he should have been series MVP. Coming back into the game was gutsy.
woulda gone for 60 if he hadnt sprained his ankle
Came here for Kareem n that Dr J dunk had me stuck
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar....The hooking ladder was the best of the best...
G O A T
who else is reviewing this clip after watching last chapter from lakers dinasty?
Dr.J is dunking on everything
he couldnt shoot no one thought to play off him?
Jabbar shoots the skyhook from ABOVE the net. It's goddamn impossible to guard lmao.
Now that was HEART, GRIT, DETERMINATION, all the Labels Kobe gets today, can't compare to Kareem coming back in to play the 4th...
im here after watching winning time
Kareem was, without question, not only the MVP of the finals, but of the entire playoffs in 1980. It WAS a joke giving it to Magic because of his game 6 performance.
the passing from magic johnson didn't equal the scoring from kareem abdul-jabbar so the 1980 1982 and 1987 finals mvp's should've been awarded to kareem abdul-jabbar
That dunk by Dr. J at 0:30 was a thing of beauty. And right in Abdul-Jabbar's face!
KAJ was smooth as butter!
The true series MVP. Look at his impact on the 5 games he played.
He left the game without crapping his pants like Paul Pierce
Kareem got his revenge dunk on Dr. J in the end 😁
Kareem, to me, is the MVP of the sport: high school, college and pro.
IMO, He is the GOAT of all of basketball. While MJ is of course, the NBA GOAT. 2 different things.
It’s crazy how he twos his ankle badly and still dropped 40 point on dr j
The next game would be the greatest game played by a rookie of all time.
Abdul-Jabbar > Jordan
Sports Fanatic Kareem definitely has a legitimate argument >Jordan.
Yes. Idk why people think it's blasphemous to say no one has an argument over Jordan. Simple minded thinking
Sports Fanatic Kareem matched Jordan in championships, MVP'S, unstoppable offense, defense, clutch shots, and underrated assists. Jordan is ARGUABLY the greatest, but Kareem absolutely belongs in that argument as well. Anyone who feels otherwise probably has selective recollections of NBA history.
I agree. There's a few NBA legends that are on his level. He's not in a league by himself

100% Facts
Kareem and Jordan top 2 all time players
Kareem was the star of that team. 6 time MVP with a great rookie. Nobody in their right minds would bet against the 76ers in game 6. Magic as a rookie averaged 18ppg, 7.7rpg, and 7.5?apg. 52% shooting, 81%FT%. Best guard of all time. Arguably best player of all time. He and Bird.
Kareem Abdul jabbar was the unappreciated super star in the history of team sports! 6 time MVP, finals MVP 15 years apart, and all time leading scorer. 3 time NCAA champion. Simply put, the best ever!!!!
I'm here confirming the Winning Time final episode of the first season. It was very accurate!
I am a big Lakers fan and watched this game in 1980. Kareem's ankle sprain would keep him out of game 6 of the finals in Phili. I thought Fantastic! I knew without Kareem the Lakers would lose game 6 in Phili, and I had tickets to game 7 at the Forum!! I was so exicted about going to game 7 of the NBA Finals.
I watched game 6 on TV. Kareem didn't play. But some rookie Laker scored 42 pts, had 15 boards, and dished out 7 assists. There was no game 7 for me to attend.
But a legend was born.
This game should be much more popular than it is
That prime Kareem was a beast, Dawkins & Jones were no joke but Kareem went thru them like butter, respect.
This is why he is the GREATEST SCORER OF ALL TIME, COZ BOY THAT HOOK SHOT WAS THE MOST DEVASTATING SHOT EVER CAUSE NO ONE COULD STOP THAT SHOT
huge Lakers Fan here, but man I had forgotten how sick the Doc was , dude's hands are huge!
We were at this game. The Sixers used to dunk during warmups. Cool times.🏀
Again, not knocking Buck, but Kareem DOMINATED. I think Kareem always had a little chip on his shoulder about that series but too pridefuel to really say something about an individual award like that. It's a no brainer but the powers that be I guess wanted their new poster-boy to get the accolades. People forget how good Kareem was that year. He was still the premiere player in the NBA (along with Moses and Doc)
It´s just like Pat Riley said: ´´Kareem was a player.´´
These finals were wonderful! A great page of NBA's history!!
The very next game is when the NBA media started rewarding Magic Johnson with UNEARNED awards based on how they like him .
Here are some of the awards Magic Johnson SHOULD NOT have won with the guy in parentheses that should have won THAT award.
1980 NBA Finals MVP (Jabbar)
1982 NBA Finals MVP (Nixon).
1989 NBA MVP (Jordan).
1990 NBA All Star Game MVP (either Isiah, Jordan, Barkley or Ewing)
1992 NBA All Star Game MVP (Drexler).
The only awards Magic Johnson EARNED were the 1987 NBA MVP and the 1987 NBA Finals MVP.
Jamaal Wilkes got Kareem dunked on twice by Dr. J. Saw this games as a kid...completely glued to the t.v. on every game that came on CBS.
Dr. J was a tough cover 4 anybody....Wilkes tried his best lol
@@MDN891 Jamaal also had a great game 6 to finish off Philly. 37 pts.
Dr J may have embarrassed Wilkes on individual plays. But Jamaal gave him some back offensively as well.
Kareem's sky hook is unguardable, but imagine Giannis Antetekounmpo in this game. He's the same size as Kareem and twice as strong. dude would feast, not to mention his defense
Giannis is 6'11".....Kareem was about 7'2" 3/4.
Giannis can't shoot free throws.
not much contact down low back then. like at all? wtf?
Masterpiece!!
lmao all these dudes in the paint
I hated Kareem back then.
It's amazing what a lineup overhaul can do around Kareem and Jamaal Wilkes..
The big guy wore low tops.
Dumb foul by Dr J lol
Winning time
@iambillym1 Worthy was scoring 30 high energy CLUTCH points in finals games when it mattered. Dr J seemed sluggish in comparison, and you don't see him stepping up like BIG GAME JAMES did. I disagree that Worthy needed Magic, etc., to be great.
@AdreasTheGreat Great as Dr J could be, Worthy was better.
Dr.j sold popcorn drove nba fans to nba area in the mid to late 1970s, carried the Aba basketball league, young athletes had more stuff to learn like pistol pete maravich videos , on basketball , remember red Auerbach nba halftime basketball clinic etc etc
