Great video. Thought I might add that the OpenSpot3 (now the OpenSpot4) gateway enables an operator to listen to DMR, DSTAR, and YSF on any DMR, DSTAR, or YSF radio. Also, IMO, the FT5 BLOWS the FT3 out of the water on MANY levels. Thanks for your channel. I enjoy, learn, and appreciate the content. 73 de KI5HHK
Motorola DTR radios in 900mhz ISM bands are license free, use FHSS ‘frequencies hopping spread spectrum’ use digital voice and texting messages and have both private or public groups with encrypted secure modes. Great for secure tactical coms, and are only $100 and easy to program, have great off shelf battery life with common headsets. You can buy in bulk and still find replacement cases, batteries and antennas. 🎉 No one will ever listen in to a 50 channel 20ms frequency hopping digital transmissions… nor group encrypted text messages. Guest can use public channels and Secure Comm Techs can use “Manager Mode” to listen in to all your programmed radios…
I live in SW MI and monitor 2m, 220, and 70cm. There is very little repeater activity in this area. The most popular (most used) is a 70cm Fusion repeater. For digital repeaters, I would say that Fusion is number-1, DSTAR is number-2, and DMR is number-3. As an aside, I never hear anything on 220, presumably all of the 220 repeaters are too far away. I am a former ham and am seeking to reenter the hobby. The one thing that I really like about the Fusion repeaters is that the comms are crystal clear.
If you are interested in obtaining a Motorola or EF Johnson to use, there are people on IG that refurb and program them and they are the same price or just a bit more expensive than the radios shown in this video.
Excellent video. I concur with your evaluation of the different digital modes. I use an Ailunce HD-1 and find it’s a solid radio , 10 watts, great battery, water resistant. Aaaaaaaaannnnd encryption if ever needed. If I was ever a comm guy for a group, I would look long and hard at it. AD8DU.
I bought the Ailunce HD-1 with GPS, its basically a Retevis radio with a different name. It is compatible with RT-80 and RT-8 I think. The hardest part is getting people to spend money on these things. They will not blink an eye to buy a 2000 dollar gun, but wont spend 200 on a radio. For now we are on the Fengs, but cant even get people to spend 25 bucks for these. Its very frustrating.
👍🏻 I TOTALLY AGREE ! I come from the $$ somewhat ripoff world of /\/\otorola and was issued my first one in 1979. A p220 “slim”. 2 channels and one PL tone (ctcss). It cost my department close to $2k back then. I currently have an APX8000 and XPR7550e. I could buy 20-30 AnyTone 878UVii radios for the cost of the APX. Truthfully… the AnyTone comes so damn close to the high tier stuff! Even though it’s not nearly as rugged or “ergonomic”, most everything else is there. It even has MUCH better quality FPP (front panel radio based programming). And… even though I haven’t tested this myself, it reportedly has full AES256 encryption. While I detest encryption for public safety after watching the Demoncraps and the Tyranny currently taking place, it’s very advantageous for personal use OUTSIDE AOF GMRS & Ham. The only things missing that would make it phenomenal.. MDC signaling on analog. APCO P25 - even just Phase I. Faster channel scan. Compatibility with Motorola and Hytera DMR “SMS” text messaging. Other than that, it’s a real champ for a PERSONAL radio. Forgot - you can expand the frequency restrictions that come with the 878. We operate on some “T Band” frequencies (our licensed freqs = 470 MHz+ up to 490MHz) and use VHF for some interop stuff. The AnyTone can do 400-520MHz and 136-174MHz and 220.
With DMR, another "privacy" feature for groups would be not operating in Promiscuous Mode. Program group radios with radio identity numbers so that only those on the list with communicate with each other. Let me know if I am wrong about how this feature works.
Good video ! FT70, had it, did not like it. 1) Battery-worst battery ever ! Bar none. 2) digital, does just enough digital to piss you off, leaves you wanting because it serious lacks usability. ATleast in my area. Truly cannot believe they are still making it. FT3D, I have it and enjoy it very much. The only problem I have is it is way smarter than me. It does more than I will ever understand. You said the menu was difficult, I dont think so. Saying that, you hafta stay in the radio, to keep yourself refreshed on wear the menu items are. Sit it down for 2/3 months and you have to start over , atleast I do. But i really like the BANK system and programming freqs to memory and to Banks is very easy. After watching your video I think I will buy an FT65 for a backup radio, 1 is none 2 is 1 ! I never really thought of using digital for security purpose, but it makes sense, to some degree. I have belonged to several prepper groups and was comms officer, i recommended Baoefeng, cheap and easy to program. PURPOSE: group comms at an event. As a Ham radio it is lacking, but for group comms it does fine. Problem is the groups I belonged too never did understand the importance of comms. They were all about guns and gear, very few even invested in the UV5R @ $25. Truth is, without comms, any group is SUNK before it gets started in a real SHTF scenario. ANyways, rant over, I enjoy your videos and your slant on them. God Bless
I bought a new FT 70 from HRO. In the first year it had to go back to Yaesu three times for three separate repairs. The third time it came back from a Yaesu I sold it on eBay for what ever I could get for it
@@KS6DAY Your videos are great -- dude above can create his own youtube channel, everyone is a critic, especially those who who not take the time to create wonderful learning guides. thank you for our videos!

Thank you great video most people won’t touch the last subject I appreciate you having some ⚽️
On the 878. Look into the digital simplex privacy codes in the setup. You'll like it.
How to hook up this radio devices to classic motorola walkie talkie with their channel 10-4?

Can I use the digital modes over MURS frequencies? For emcom purposes? So bad actors cant gain intel.

Another excellent video. Looking forward to a more in depth video on this radio and the Yaesu VX-6.

Thoughts on EF johnson 5100? $100 ish on eBay can p25 & can be encrypted
Solid radios and software is free.

The Anytone 878 is a really high quality rafio
And ugly as sin. If they had a thinner battery on the back I would have four of them.

Promiscuous mode is for listening. You can't stop another radio listening in promiscuous mode.

Well, knock on wood, I have a FT-70D for almost a year now. The main issue I have is adjusting the volume. The VX-6 is a better design.

comprehensive Anytone review plz
Iridium satellite network ptt could an option but it’s expensive
Ft70 is wonderful compared to uv5r
Hmmm....
If your digital radio can't run opengd77 in 2024 then it's not even worth a consideration
How is opengd77 relevant to DStar or C4FM? My understanding is that it is just an open source firmware update for Radioddity GD-77 DMR radios.
"Baristas don't make a heck of a lot of money." 😂 Love it!
Another video about "Digital Radios" that never a mentions sending DATA. If you want to talk buy an FM radio.
I don't send DATA. That's why I didn't mention it.
